The mystery deepens...
- they said my computer had been removed from the domain for a while, but I used it as recently as Friday
‐ they told me they need to upgrade it off Windows 8. AKAIK I've never used Windows 8
It sounds like the machine got reimaged somehow. I'm beginning to worry that my files aren't exactly where I left them.

Who wants to bet they're looking at the wrong machine?

I think even if you were to set that at -2000 odds you wouldn't find enough takers on the reverse side to balance the books.

Status: Huh. Iris sent another four replacement lids. Too bad they aren't the clear type. I really only needed the four I requested in black but I could use probably a dozen in clear.

Status: I love weather.
I was watching a live-stream from Minnesota earlier. They're having a blizzard, expected to be the worst blizzard in years, with something like 12-15 inches of snow. Meanwhile, here in Texas, I was outside in shorts and no shirt, with a temperature of about 80°F (29°C). In February.

status Just came back into the house to hear my APC NS1080 UPS screeching. (gawd, I hope I wasn't editing something since that took the desktop computer down hard)
"F02". Well fuck. (powers down to stop the NOISE) <googles>
Ok, unplug all load, unplug from wall, plug all back in.Well, it seems to work... Not sure on the trust level though...
So, what UPSs do you like for moderate home use? I'd like to keep the desktop running for, say, 30-45 minutes at least.
I have a CyberPower 1500AVR with LCD, probably a predecessor to this current model. It'll get to the half hour shutdown time I set in Windows, though if I'm awake I'll usually go turn the computer and UPS off to get the beeping to stop. (Admittedly, I haven't tried AAA gaming for a half hour on it.)
I only have one monitor (of two) on the battery powered side, along with the computer and its external drives.
I've had it long enough to have replaced the battery once. It's simple enough to do.

Status: We're having a blizzard for the first time in a while! It's been a lot of fun for those of us who weren't travelling on I-90, which was closed again. Around here I've seen reports of 6-8" of snow so far, with more to the north. Should taper off tomorrow just in time for me to go into town.

My laptop was returned to me. Everything seems to be as it was in 2020. New programs and files are gone, but old ones are somehow back in their place. It's like they restored a 3 year old backup.
-
@error at least it's not Windows 8

Guess you should have backed up more frequently. (Damn those write-only backups!)

Just ordered the current version of that from Amazon. Arrives tomorrow. Then the fun of swapping (and finally plugging in one monitor so I can see - I left that off before to maximize runtime and let the OS shutdown when it senses the battery level is down.)

.I used port's pkg to do the initial install(update). The upgrade process seems to be recompiling a bunch of programs.

Status: <nancykerrigan>why me</nancykerrigan>
I've been putting paperwork into 3-ring binders.
I ran out of flat surfaces so it was time to put everything on shelves.
I opened an Origami folding unit that I've had for a few years. The thing has five shelves not including the top and all but one of those shelves are a fraction of an inch too short for a 3-ring binder.
Also I have a damned desk lamp that keeps falling over because it feels like it and I want to throw it out the window.

Oh yeah, we have a missing two weeks in the lore. Christ what a fuck up. There's probably a good joke or two in there.
status probably going to spend the morning looking up how to do an em dash rather than writing a design document.
*edit also pleasantly surprised that Amazon music recommended a new Robert Johnson collection. Despite having an almost half decade long list of what I listen too they still try to give me artist of the moment shite.

Not so much today. Currently 10°C with a forecast high of about 12 (50 and 53°F, respectively) and cloudy with a chance of drizzle all day.

Never, it's simply untrue. Just do Levenshtein or Soundex closest match. If there's two, fuckit, take the average.

Speaking of good stuff like that... I really wanted to duplicate the scallops dish I had for lunch yesterday. But considering the amount of garlic in it and that I'm going to the eye doctor in 30 minutes, I decided I'd save that for another day...

Gah! That's also the curse of Sunday roasts. You start at three and the house smells great at four but you don't eat until six.

Unrelated. The motor that drives the tray cannot overcome the hardened kink that the rubber belt became when it stopped moving for an extended period of time.
In other words: We don't kink shame, but proper operation will require replacement with a normalized unit.
-
Could be a just a worn belt. If there's a manual eject hole, insert a straightened paperclip to open the drawer.
-
@Tsaukpaetra I don't even hear the motor try to move.

@Zerosquare Stupid me was building a media player at the time and used a fancy case where I can't get to the real faceplate of the drive so easily.
