@Zecc That's a valid point. Maybe use an
Await

Just put a sticker over the word
God
to replace it withAllah
. It's even technically the same meaning...

more sane in this regard.
Success! And yes, it is more sane than the prior concept which was to combine the different WIM files into one indexed one (because the difference between them is literally a text file with a keyword in it) and trick bootmgr to boot into the different images based off of dynamically mem-mapping the index XML file according to selection .
So I moved on to seeing if I could get Bootmgr to load ye standard .efi programs (like, say, Memtest86, the passmark version or back-to-free version).
Turns out, YOU FUCKING CAN'T, SON!
See, bootmgr actually requires the efi executable to be tailored to running from it! Normal ones will not work and bootmgr simply "file not found"s it.
Why?!?! What possible reason could there be to NOT support this? The generic EFI shell is perfectly capable of doing the needful and gracefully handles an application exiting and whatnot, so it's totally possible!
$deity damn but I wish this wasn't so underpants on hands dumb...

Status: Finished Arkham Knight. There's too many side missions and too many Riddler trophies in my opinion; it needed more focus. Still a decent game, though.

Status: Confused.
Showed up to work this morning to a random failure in the nightly build. Looking into it, the build message says that it can't find
version.cpp
, a file that is auto-generated by a Python script (including date, git hash, etc.). So I go to the build directory to check and it's there. Type inmake
and it compiles everything just fine. Delete the file, typemake
again, it automatically regenerates it, compiles the corresponding.o
and links, all fine.
So what happened? My first thought was some race issue where the dependencies started building before writing the file was done (which shouldn't happen, but who ), but that's probably not it. It's literally make that outputs:make[1]: *** No rule to make target `version.cpp`, needed by `release/.obj/version.o`. Stop.
But I see the rule right there in the (generated) Makefile! And you found a rule when I ran
make
.

Time to sift through yesterday's commits!

@Tsaukpaetra nothing related, it was a random event and went away by itself. But the problem is that means it could happen again anytime unless I find the real reason.

It's building too fast. Add some weights.

Status: Really liking Chrome's "make everything dark mode" feature.
Only thing I hate about it is that it tends to fuck with the copied CSS.
I mean, yes, technically it's making things like "color: black; really means color: white", but it should still use the original "color: black;" when copying for fuck's sake!

My last PR had to be re-run 3 times before I could merge because of random unittest failures. All with no relation to my code, of course. When you're talking about 2 to 3 hours per build, that pretty much kills productivity.
-
@Tsaukpaetra said in The Official Status Thread:

You can't un-call
ExitBootServices()
.
-
@dcon A product related to ours automated this. If a test suite had failures, the same code would be tested a second time. Any differences between success/fail of individual tests would automatically be filed as bugs to the test owners.

Status: Stupid township garbage pickup. Looks like they either switched the day without notice or decided not to show up. Judging from the lack of can sitting out down the street
late last nightearly this morning, I would guess it was the former. Well fuck them, I'll leave the cans out front until the next pickup cycle.I've been working in the wee hours of the morning to clear out space so the plumber can get in to fix like half a dozen problems and the last couple I made alot of progress. But now I find myself waiting. Waiting for storage totes to arrive, waiting for the vacuum battery to charge, waiting for the garbage man to empty the cans so I can refill them, etc.
Meanwhile, the county IRS is on my ass because the returns I filed at the front of plandemic must not have made it there. So I'm digging through this mess for those records too and not having any luck so far. But there's really only so many hours in the day that I can devote to this. The stupid part is I never owe any money so filing is really just a formality.

Be careful with this and doublecheck your municipality's laws, I know in mine if the trash cans are left out too long like that you can be cited and fined for something or other.
-
@e4tmyl33t I went to the township website to find out what day pickup was and they won't say other than cable company weasel words like "pickup is M-T-W-R depending on where you live." The township's not that big that they need four damned days? But this general attitude of "it'll happen on a day ending in Y - stay tuned" is pervasive.
-
@Zenith Ah, to live in the frist world with an app.
-
@Zenith Mine does similar but once a year or so hands out a paper sheet they stick in everyone's fences/mailboxes that has the garbage/recycling pickup schedules for various little subzones or street sections of the municipality.

That's what our town does too. We're on Tuesdays.

Our town "newsletter" is mailed periodically. (I think it's semiannually. Might be quarterly.) My pickup hasn't changed since I moved here in 1996 (on Friday).

Status: Changed the license on one of my repos today. (The overall project has agreed to do this, and the copyright ownership is simple enough that it is practical to do so.) I hadn't realized there were quite so many files in there...

@Zenith Color me surprised, somebody picked up the garbage around noon.
And...it's full again. Throwing out so much stuff it's not funny. Mostly cardboard boxes but also more literal garbage that I'd care to admit. It was too easy to set a soda bottle down for a second and forget about it. Another couple of days and I'll be able to really clean the bathrooms, including the one I haven't used most of for years, from top to bottom. Hoping to find some of documentation I've been looking for now that some of the stuff piled on top is out of the way.

Status: The zfs snapshot pruning hasn't been working for... some time.
Guess what happens when you have a snapshot policy that replicates every ten minutes but doesn't respect the lifetime of 4 hours and nobody is there to see it for half a year?
Also status: Gotta love ZFS's robustness, I had no idea there was a problem until I noticed VM storage was several hundred times the size it was supposed to be and the pool was registering as "getting full".

This should result in the removal of 32511 snapshots.

It makes it louder, in fact. It's a dilator. What you need in the morning is a cigarette (infallible papal statement). Coffee's caffeine is 30 minutes to the brain but warmth goes right up the vagus nerve.

Alas, that is why I have been (mostly) avoiding caffeine for a few months, so that it will have that effect when I really need it, rather than continuing to build an ever-increasing tolerance to it.
-
@HardwareGeek said in The Official Status Thread:

I'm attempting the opposite: since I'm not apparently impacted by caffeine, I'm drinking lots of it and will attempt a crash (say, tomorrow) by not doing so.
Will report on ineffectiveness. If I remember to.

Nifty, that way when a real stressful situation pops up you can drink a cup of
coffeeweak tea, have a heart attack, and miss the whole thing.

It's Nelson Goodman, yeah? They know they are approved to pay, but, if they fill out another application, who knows it might be free.
Also if I get anything saying I was approved I reply as falsely and maliciously as possible, in the general (unsolicited) case.
