Expedited really helps there!

Status: trying out Inkscape. It has some neat features but so many idiosyncrasies of its own. Why do I have to explicitly enable every basic panel like layers and strokes? Just give me a colour picker !!

@Zerosquare I thought for a moment it was Commander Keen edition but wrong colour scheme.
I wonder what kind of abomination you'd get if you let Microsoft redesign that game.
-
@dcon I've had these lenovo slim series laptops the keyboards are really bad. I'd never buy a lenovo slim series again. You might wanna reconsider.
-
@dcon those $30 spent on expedited delivery are really worth it.

Depends which studio is doing it. If the pending ActiBlizz acquisition happens it’d be a travesty but there’s studios under the MS banner that wouldn’t screw it up.
MS itself would, of course.

Good to know before I do anything! (I do like my current X1.) I like to do the 'what would a new machine look like' configuration a few times before Black Friday/Cyber Monday.

Opposite of me. All day yesterday, I kept thinking it was Friday. Your off-by-one is definitely better than mine.

Status: I bought this "unauthorised guide to Challenge of the Gobots" not expecting much and I am still let down. Flipped through some pages and it's clear Laserion Publishing didn't do any editing for Cassidy Jones. Writers names misspelled, bad grammar/punctuation, copy pasta errors, the works. I also recognize some "jokes" from the TF wiki or Counter-X that aren't funny because they're based on demonstrably untrue "facts." And no pictures. At all. Really? But I get the feeling that if they had included any, they would've been stolen from my own website so maybe I should count my blessings on that.
I have to publish my own GoBots book now.

It came to me because the previous tech could not follow basic instructions and locked himself out of the default administrator account he created.

bitcoin is Web3. I think we have a thread for that

@DogsB I meant it as in “Is web3 the new BS?”
-
Also they say everything is gonna be decentralised and won’t be controlled by a single entity. How might a decentralised cloudflare look like? Is everyone gonna have their own cloud provider at home? I’m missing a big chunk of the sales pitch here.

Yeah the Web3 stuff is in that topic.

@stillwater don’t think about it too hard. It’s so stupid it’ll fry your brain. You don’t have the Thetan levels to understand this bullshit.
The only sensible options are to shitpost in the corresponding thread or to wait until it goes away by itself.

Shortish answer, everyone is going to host their shit “on the blockchain” using decentralised infrastructure like Ethereum where somehow somewhere there exists a massive compute pool of VMs that everyone can just share in exchange for ETH.
Not only is this deeply wasteful, questionably insecure and all around weird, it conveniently forgets the lessons we learned in Web1 and Web2.0, namely:
- people don’t really want to host their own architecture in general
- for anything actually hard, the market will naturally gravitate towards the first few who do it, then to the few who do it better in that order
The clowns talking about decentralising everything conveniently forget that 1) people still run the infrastructure for you, and they’re as centralised as they ever were, and 2) the number of wallets like MetaMask are really frontends to what amount to centralised services like Infura and Alchemy to do the actual heavy lifting. For other parts of the ecosystem, see OpenSea and CoinBase as de facto centralised components.
For more information please re-read.

@Arantor said in The Official Status Thread:

I’ll wait for your correction, that or there’s a little bit of optimism that we haven’t burned out of you yet.
-
@Arantor you’re forgetting some key points:
- it’s all a pump-and-dump scheme for crypto garbage.
- it doesn’t make any fucking sense. Saying that your website will be decentralized because it’s “on the blockchain” is like saying you’ll buy your milk from Nvidia.
-
@DogsB no, better in this case is relative, not objective or absolute.
The first to market in almost any market is inevitably shit, the second to market inevitably learns from the first but likely never innovates too hard. We’re only talking about the journey from 1.0 to 1.1 here, not 1.0 to 2.0… and it only has to clear the bar of “better” from a user perspective in any one criteria. Less ugly, less user hostile etc. all qualify.
-
@topspin 1 is kind of implicit but the cryptobros are so in denial trying to raise that point is irrelevant, so I kept to the other flaws in their argument.
2 does make the tiniest amount of sense when you realise that “blockchain” in this context is mostly technical illiteracy and that what is really happening is that it’s not “the blockchain” but “the ETH blockchain ecosystem” which includes the aforementioned VM pool and “smart contracts”.
-
@topspin said in The Official Status Thread:

It has a really beautiful raytraced cow on the package!
-
@Arantor said in The Official Status Thread:

No it doesn’t, but I’m not gonna blame you too hard for giving them the benefit of the doubt.
-
@topspin well……….. I say “make sense” in as much as “it has words that together form a cohesive concept that can be explained”
But I’m not saying the concept is good, merely what it is. In practice it is in the same category as fitting wheels to a tomato - the words make the tiniest amount of sense in that you can conceive of what that might possibly be, but it is in no way a thing that should actually exist because it is mind-searingly stupid.
Part of the problem with smacking this down is that we as technical people understand what is wrong with it technically and why it is a scam, but I find breaking through the ideology a lot harder.

The answer I was expecting was cheaper... but I will give you a prize of only half an hour in the Tuesday cube.
-
@DogsB cheaper is another example of “better” from a given point of view. Everyone has their list of criteria for judging better. I give you the rise of Apple as a product not first to market, sure as hell not cheaper but perceived as (and at one time may have been) better than the immediate competition.
