Just leaving this here.

@Tsaukpaetra KYCF8 apparently. There's a full key in
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/CurrentVersion/DefaultProductKey/DigitalProductID
but theProductID
with it doesn't match what Control Panel says so I don't know what its deal is.

What the response was?
I understand that once you've found the piece of data you're looking for the rest just disappears, but really? Literally the next line reads "you or a co-worker will need to be onsite/present". Can it get any less ambiguous than that?
-
@Tsaukpaetra I would have responded
Yes, you need to be physically there as the line saying "(too to type it)" states.
This is why people don't let me do customer service.

Eh, that's probably within the realm of an acceptable customer service response. Better than some I've seen/heard suggested.

Gearing up for that month or just a general sentiment?
-
@Applied-Mediocrity general sentiment. That month is fine, going for the hat-trick this year but that doesnât bother me because I have something with plenty of material ready to go for that.
But I had an idea for a thing that I originally envisaged as a text adventure and at some point hit a âhow would this look as a novel, would it even work?â So I started trying it. I chose⌠poorly.

Status: Attempting to install a Python program for creating computer-generated music. One of the Python libraries it needs needs MSVC++. Now installing Visual Studio Build Tools.
Status: I feel dirty.Note: Trying to install it under WSL also fails because it can't find the specific version of gcc it wants. And version mismatches with other packages. Sigh...
-
@HardwareGeek see if the prebuilt is here
https://www.lfd.uci.edu/~gohlke/pythonlibs/also you can use the search box in https://anaconda.org/anaconda/conda
to see if available. Note: conda packages best used with the Anaconda python distribution, see near top right in that page.
edit: assumed you tried pip install or a search in https://pypi.org . You tried, right?

Warning, rant
Status Full of hate for all you people who did layout with
<table>
s. You're why now, when I really do want to lay out a table (semantically) with some nice formatting, I have to spend hours tracking down why browsers expect very different css values for the same, unprefixed properties to do something as simple as "have the height of the content of the cell match the row height".You see, CSS 2 did not specify the behavior of the
height
property on table rows or table cells. Because there were fifty-eleven different hacks for special cases that would have broken had they done so. And now we have the case whereWebkit wants
tr, thead { height: 1px; /*any value would do here, but has to be an absolute measurement, not a percent or anything else, otherwise this doesn't get inherited and the tds are the wrong size*/ } td, th { height: inherit; }
While Gecko wants
tr, thead { height: fit-content; /*it treats this as gospel, so if you give it 1px it makes them 1px tall*/ } td, th { height: 100%; /*it does the wrong thing on inherit*/ }
Which means browser-specific css queries. And you know how long it took to nail that one down? I hate you all.

Yes.
Apparently, it needs to compile something from source. Installing under Linux (WSL) it needs gcc. More specifically, it attempts to execute the command
x86_64-linux-gnu-gcc -pthread -Wno-unused-result -Wsign-compare -DNDEBUG -g -fwrapv -O2 -Wall -g -fstack-protector-strong -Wformat -Werror=format-security -g -fwrapv -O2 -g -fstack-protector-strong -Wformat -Werror=format-security -Wdate-time -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 -fPIC -D__RTMIDI_SILENCE_WARNINGS__ -D__LINUX_ALSA__ -Isrc/rtmidi -I/usr/include/python3.8 -c src/_rtmidi.cpp -o build/temp.linux-x86_64-3.8/src/_rtmidi.o
.Hmm, it seems the reason this failed is because WSL does not include gcc by default. Linux without gcc?!? Well, it has it now.
-
@HardwareGeek You're going to be sad; you're using Python 3.8 and it specifically tries to link against Python 3.4.

Also setup.py line 52. After fixing that I was able to convince it to build an egg, but I'm still working on building a wheel, and I don't know if it'll be useful to you since it's Windows-side instead of WSL-side.
-
@TwelveBaud Well, I gave up on WSL and followed the installation instructions for Windows, assuming you don't already have Python installed, and it Just Workedâ˘. So I now have (at least) 4 installations of Python: WSL (3.8), Python (3.10) bundled with Blender, Python (3.10) bundled with the IDE this program's author recommends, and Python () bundled with Lilypond.

Belated status: I was sitting outside having lunch, when I heard the distinctive flutter of a chromatic parrot.
Yes, the male had come around, and not just to say hi â with a carefully measured approach he landed closer and closer until he was standing on the edge of the bowl. And, of course, proceeded to give it a good go with his tongue. Fortunately Iâd already finished by this point or I might have acted a bit sooner.
The rule of rainbow lorikeets is that as long there is food, it is theirs. Just yesterday I saw a (different) pair blissfully hopping around a dozen chickens far bigger than the two of them together, helping themselves to the chickensâ scraps without a care in the world.
