I was trying to help my aunt recover files from a disk drive. So, I shut down my PC and plugged the drive in. Now my PC won't even post.

@Benjamin-Hall oh. It also helps if you open the outer window that the portable ac's exhaust hose (where the hot air goes) first. So you're not just trying to cool the air you just heated up. Like trying to cool the house by opening the fridge door. As usual, trwtf is me.

Since you asked...
The phrase is often mistaken as a scriptural quote, though it is not stated verbatim in the Bible. Some Christians consider the expression contrary to the biblical message of God's grace and help for the helpless, though in harmony with biblical calls for individual effort.[1] A variant of the phrase can also be found in the Quran (13:11).[2][3]

No central air at all, and only one of those "portable" units with one hose. It works, mostly, but only if I remember to do things right.
Oh, and the windows are "wish it were double pane. Two separate panes that move independently. It's an older duplex.

Well, you live in the US, not in a modern countryIn Oregon, there's normally about 1 week of the year where AC is needed. And about 3 where heat is needed. But more recent buildings do, generally, have central HVAC. Unless they're cheap apartments built in student areas, because that'd cost extra.

Well, I was going to say something along the lines of "they're undergraduates, who aren't even really human anyway. They're just mobile access codes to their parents' bank accounts and student loan money". At least from the perspectives of the college staff and the builders. But that might have been a bit
cynicaltoo truthful.

@Benjamin-Hall Also, that would be in the wrong thread

I've been in Portland in November when there was an airmass pouring over the mountains from central Canada. It was both cold (though not nearly as bad as the high plains get) and incredibly dry.

I'm further down the valley to the south. Here, if it gets down to freezing, that's unusual. And highs in the 60s, lows in the 40s are pretty normal for the coldest part of winter. And normally the highest it gets is 90 or so for a week. Last year had a heat wave of 117!1!, and several weeks in the upper 90s. This week has been 95-100 with lows in the upper 50s, and the last few days of it, the lows only get down to the lower 60s, and that only for a bit. So the house doesn't fully cool off. Which sucks. Badly.

Our summer highs have been running close to 40.

Yeah, into an external dock with its own power supply and basically isolated from the host PC, right?
-
@Tsaukpaetra Well...that was the plan until I discovered the only external docks I had were either IDE or for 2.5" drives. Then I had to test it the old fashioned way. Apparently in the course of doing that I jostled something loose. My guess would be the mains didn't click entirely. Took hours of pulling everything apart and putting it back together.

At least they won't have to pause the ceremony because there's a new update available and Windows needs to install it right now.

While running a "fix LCD burn-in" video, I noticed that all the bright patches are pretty much the same whether it's displaying red, green or blue. So now I'm thinking it could be the backlight that's the problem rather than the LCD panel itself.
