status there is two bars at this gig on opposite sides of the room. Each of them have a bottle of Jameson that is a third full. If I run one to the other I might be able to stay in Jameson for the night and not get refused service.
Also the band needs to invest in a cowbell instead of a tambourine.
For a blues gig, everyone is surprisingly well dressed. I've shown up worse dressed to interviews than the average here.

Hah! It's blues! No wild oats need apply. Just cheap whiskey and wondering if your offspring is the milkmans’.
*edit the old boys outshone the main event. Good night though.

That would be quite surprising but I'll ponder it.

Well, almost. It's been stuck at the bootloader for five minutes now with no disk activity. The keyboard needs new batteries, so that's about as far as I can take it.
I replaced the batteries and booted some Linux off of USB.
Running modern operating systems from USB2 is pretty slow.
Anyways, managed to fsck the drive and got it booted.
A total of two pictures and a start of a family tree document are the only non-default files present.
I'm not even going to bother cleaning it LOL....

I've been seeing this video recommended by Youtube for like a month straight:
It's a neat video about Windows mouse cursors and I'd recommend it if you're into that sort of thing. I clicked on it the first time and watched it all the way through. However, I don't know how much blood the algorithm it thinks it can get out of that stone by offering me the same video

Status: Irritated at broken stuff. Two different places I've tried to pay for something. One was paying the balance on a preorder. The page spun, said it charged me, sent an e-mail, and disappeared the button. But the e-mail showed the deposit amount and the status didn't change to paid. The other, I went through, was told payment was processed, and then...nothing. No e-mail and the order page still has a pay button. Both of these sites worked in the past. Why does everything break constantly?

I've been using the cursors myself for a month now (I think I may have posted above about it?). They're... alright. No complaints from me.

At least on my implementation, if I can't verify that payment occurred (or was authorized), I don't send the signal to actually fucking charge it.
-
@Zenith said in The Official Status Thread:

It doesn't. It's being deliberately broken so that the bloated, turgid, putrid, rotten, festering, pustular and cancerous industry can sustain itself.

@Applied-Mediocrity that and the fact that a staggering proportion of the industry is incompetent therefore Sturgeon’s law ends up being less 90% and more 99%.
There are days I am convinced that half the things that work do so by accident.

That’s why I’m skeptical of people who look at some catastrophic failure of a complex system and say, “Wow, the odds of this happening are astronomical. Five different safety systems had to fail simultaneously!” What they don’t realize is that one or two of those systems are failing all the time, and it’s up to the other three systems to prevent the failure from turning into a disaster. You never see a news story that says “A gas refinery did not explode today because simultaneous failures in the first, second, fourth, and fifth safety systems did not lead to a disaster thanks to a correctly-functioning third system.” The role of the failure and the savior may change over time, until eventually all of the systems choose to have a bad day all on the same day, and something goes boom.

In the aviation world (and maybe elsewhere, but that's where I generally hear it), this is known as the Swiss cheese model. There's only a failure if the holes in all the slices of cheese line up. If there's a failure in one slice, the next slice isn't supposed to have a hole in the same place, so it keeps the failure in the previous slice from propagating further. Unfortunately, of course, sometimes the holes do line up.
-
@HardwareGeek I prefer to think of it as the 1990s shitty copy-protection code wheel. You can spin it around and around but at some point the holes will line up, just not necessarily in a useful way.

You see, sometimes I fsck harder than I fuck, and the keyboard likes both more or less at different times. Chrome doesn't care for either.

Status: Using an old keyboard where the keys now feel too low...
I opened a soda and it fizzed all over me. I thought I caught most of it on my clothes but ten minutes later my expensive short keyboard started flipping out. I took it apart and cleaned everything off (looked dusty/dirty, not wet) and it was still being stupid. So I set this old keyboard up (and had to figure out how to trick it into thinking an alt key that wasn't pressed really wasn't pressed) and went to open another soda without thinking and that one fizzed all over the place too. Sometimes I really hate this caffeine addiction...
Edit: OK, not the whole way apart. Seven screws in the back and it's still glued together or something. Seems like it's calming down a little, just flipping out sometimes for some reason...
Edit: Yep, 11 screws, including the 4 hidden under the glued rubber pads. What kind of asshole designs a product like this? Oh, you can take it apart, provided you can glue it back together such that it doesn't fall apart every time you look at it afterward,

tbh knife crime and the price of rent are enough for most people to leave. I keep coming back because of music and comedy gigs but manchester is picking up in that regard. I wonder how much rent is there. If alcohol is cheaper there I'll probably consider a move.

Splatterhouse

-

Probably lower than London, but nearly everywhere in the world is that. SF might have crazier prices.

Commercial rents are going to be cheaper, so alcohol is almost certainly cheaper too, at least in pubs. But I know that it will depend a lot on which places you go to; there are bars with stupid high prices in both cities, and cheap drinking holes too (though I've not been drinking in London for a decade or so).

I remember the price of flights being comparable with the cost of a week's hotel stay (at a place where the roaches weren't running the kitchen).

A one-way ticket to Houston from London is just over a grand. What's the rent like?

Cheaper than in a real city, but your electric bill is what to think about.

Return tickets tend to be cheaper, especially if you stay over a Saturday night (as that flags your trip as "recreation" instead of "business", triggering a different pricing algorithm).

I don't know about Houston; I'd assume it's similar or slightly less than where I am. Here, it's possible to rent a 4 bedroom house in the suburbs 15-ish minutes from downtown for $2k/month. A small apartment can be had for $1k (or could the last time I was looking at prices, a couple of years ago).
But then you'd be in Houston. Ugh.
