@nerd4sale I personally came a little late to the party - only getting online in ‘98 or so, and where web was all I really had access to, so I never had the original Usenet experience.
I don’t think I’d like Usenet as much as I like forums but who knows.

@Tsaukpaetra I'm pretty sure you already have a thread for oversharing. Have you lost track of it during an unsafe reboot?

@Zecc does a safe mode even exist?

The system's registered sealed signed kernel is ht2185.14-2002lmr, created during HAL reconfiguration event for reversion if the upgrade failed during data migration.

The really important technical things about it were that it was designed to be able to work offline, and that it was from a period when bandwidth was far less (and far slower) than today. But more important at the time was that was where all the discussions of any value about, well, nearly anything were happening.
There are still some operational communities out there, with bridging into various types of web fora.

I'd add the high latency and, especially, the unreliable transport. The unreliable transport was most obvious in the binary groups, if you were trying to reconstruct a file split into multiple posts and one was missing, but even in an ordinary text conversation, you couldn't be sure that all the posts had been delivered to all the participants.
It reminds me a bit of conversations here. The difference is that here, you can be reasonably certain that the posts have been delivered to everyone's browsers (except for occasional glitches, but they're uncommon), but you can also be reasonably certain that some participants will reply without actually reading them.

On multiple occassions, I've come back to a thread with posts A, B, C where I've read both A and C but not B in between. Here, A was already there when I opened the thread and C got loaded when I replied to somewhere in the thread (in web-2.0 fashion), but B didn't. Happens mostly in high-frequency yelling threads.
It's pretty irritating.

I mean, a lot of crap is written in PHP but in recent times it's no better or worse than any other language for bad code.
I condone this statement. Now let me tell you what I've done in the last hour. AOP isn't even the greatest offence.

Yeah, I've seen that, too, but it's pretty rare. At least in my experience.
Happens mostly in <abbr title="post-time, not pitch">high-frequency</abbr> yelling threads.
Some of those get quite shrill.

I see this , which is why I frequently scroll up in threads I've "already read".

This happens all the time, judging by my one-off misses in upvote tracking!

I think my first experience with it was with a 14.4k modem.
Ah, the old multipart uudecode days... (Ok, I really don't miss that!)

I think the Silent 700 was my first online experience (which, if I remember right, was 9600baud.
(plus, I didn't say it actually connected at that speed!)

Blocked by process, so I'm seriously tempted to play... But I'll be good and do documentation and such like.

Status: seems people are playing the "if I ignore it it goes away" with overtime approvals and ticket approvals. People are getting increasingly mad, but not enough to start having meetings.
-
@Tsaukpaetra said in The Official Status Thread:
start having meetings.
The unofficial meetings are happening! Now taking bets for the following occurences:
- nothing happens
- we'll get blanket implied approval for certain (regular) requests while the others still need pre-approval
- they'll go back from allowing work before actual approval is obtained
- meetings will happen
-
@Tsaukpaetra I foresee Option 4.
-
@Benjamin-Hall It's 5:00 somewhere, right?
Played in the morning: queue was nominal (just the usual throttled log in process).
Played at lunch: queue was about 200, went fairly fast.
Logging in now: queue started at 2821. This may take a while.

@Benjamin-Hall Yeah. Error 2002 all over the place. Can't even get to the character select screen. Guess I'll...sigh...work on the D&D session for tomorrow then for a bit.
