I solved the problem by downloading more RAM
I kind of look forward to DDR5. Well, after initial compatibility and price issues pass, with the latter being especially bad prospect these days.
NVMe SSDs seem to have crossed the technological marvel line and become stupid in their search for quick buck. Boiling hot, with write endurance of a wrinkled grocery receipt. Cosmic speeds is all they have, but good luck catching up to the 50+ GB/s my ramdisk has.

4TB is (probably — famous last words) more than I'll ever use.
I guess you don't play a lot of AAA games? Although with 4TB ... you might last for another release cycle, assuming you don't need to store anything other than your one game on that drive.
My Steam library is using about 640GB, and I found another 230GB of non-Steam content scattered about. I own a bunch of other Steam games that I don't have installed, but none of them are AAA. I'm guessing I might get up to somewhat over 1TB, maybe 1.5TB, total, if I installed everything I own and everything on my wish list.
I decided to try installing a game on the new computer, and was reminded what a steaming Origin is. I originally bought the game on DVD, but I can't find the base game disk, only 3 expansion packs. The nice thing about having the base game installed from DVD was that I didn't have to deal with Origin at all to play the game; I could even bypass the game's own launcher by launching the game .exe instead of the launcher .exe (this was necessary for one of the mods, probably the one that suppressed extraneous start-up videos).
However, since I can't find the DVDs, it occurred to me that maybe I could download the game from Origin. I looked through my old email for the address I had used for Origin, and sure enough, even though I hadn't gone near Origin for almost two years, I was able to log in, download, and install the game. It only took about 3 tries to get Origin to actually start the download.
Playing the game is another matter entirely. It's impossible to launch the game without using the origin client. Even double-clicking the game .exe launches Origin. But it doesn't launch the game. Well, it tries to, but the game immediately crashes with a
System.DllNotFoundException
(not that you'd have the faintest idea what's wrong unless you have the technical knowledge to dig intoperfmon /rel
; the Origin client simply disappears very briefly, then reappears, with nary an error message to be seen). After looking at forum posts from other people with the same problem a couple of years ago, with answers involving video drivers, registry keys, and even flashing a new BIOS, the only answer I found that seems to have actually helped was contacting Origin support, because they screwed up something in the account, and even though it knows you own the game, you're blocked from running it for some reason.I will go on a more thorough search for the missing DVDs later, because Origin.

You?

I've been sitting here for the last ten minutes wondering why Notepad isn't launching and Task Manager is frozen for no apparent reason, while other programs that haven't needed disk access are still fine.
Thanks.

Watchdog. Somehow the SATA controller decided to completely stop working, and Windows can run only for so long before the lack of IO ability causes it to deadlock waiting...

Yeah, Ende distanced himself from the movie as soon as he figured out how much they'd diverge from the source. Also, the (two?) sequels are just abominations.
Compare that to Momo where he actually had a cameo in the beginning portion of the movie. That one still holds up.

Never read the book, but the first movie isn't bad.

The book is very good (and is all about the importance of names, stories and memory), but also really quite literary so any conversion to a film was always going to have problems. The film only really uses material from the first half of the book too, and they had a complete hack of a scriptwriter to fill in the holes made by not using the whole of the book.
-

That was always a book that was going to be easier to film anyway. The story's shorter and much closer to what fits with a film; the script didn't need to change so much. (I've never seen Momo, but I have read it.)

Status: Fuck you "Verified by VISA", I hate you so. fucking. much.
This shit never works. Anytime some stupid site demands this for payment I always end up doing something else.
Since they changed this shit from "3D secure" to "verified by Visa", the supposed workflow is that I register my phone with some stupid "S-ID-check" app from my bank, then they send me a code there and I click accept. If it worked. What actually happened: I get a push notification that "one message is waiting" in the app. I tap that to open the app, but instead of showing me that message the first thing it asks me to do is register my card. Which I have done one million times before (apparently futile). At least it's nice enough that you can scan your card with the phone camera and then it detects the card number. I do that, it displays the card number and does nothing. There's a button to accept the number it detected and one that says to enter it manually, but tapping either doesn't do anything. It's just stuck. For fuck's sake. So I restart the app and it actually shows me the receipt for the payment that it should have shown me right from the start. I click accept and it asks for a PIN. Sigh Because it's not enough to have the CC number/CCV and the phone with the registered app, you also need another PIN that I never use and thus don't know. Off we go to the password manager. I have a PIN for the actual CC and one entry that says "Verified by VISA". Logically, it should be the latter, so I enter that. It aborts the payment. Fuck! I start everything over again and try with the CC PIN. Also not. I try again with everything I can think off (PIN for the bank debit card, first 4 digits of phone PIN, standard numbers I enter for random stuff, etc.) Nothing works. There's another entry in the password manager that says it's for this stupid app, but that's a password, not a PIN.
So the only option I have left seems to be to go the "forgot PIN" route, which means I have to register the card with the app again. Which I have done multiple times, whenever I failed to try and pay with this garbage, and IIRC consists of a dozen completely unintelligible steps. And on the bank's shitty website I can't even find where to do it right now. By now I have re-registered this shit more times than I have successfully paid with it.
Also, by this time apparently VISA has blocked something and doesn't accept the CC anymore before even going to the "Verified" garbage-2FA step.
2FA was invented to make you lose legitimate access to your accounts. Change my mind.
-
@topspin also, the payment amount is fucking 12€. Just accept the goddamn payment FFS.
-
@topspin My God, NewEgg used to do that to me all the time and I had to back out because I refused to set up another account/password to remember for no reason.
-
@topspin said in The Official Status Thread:

Here's a fun one I recently experienced: if you enable 2fa on your farcebook account, resetting your password is insufficient to let you in. Still gotta have that 2FA. Which, if you're me, was set up by some hacker in Brazil. Because, you know, security.

I have one of those, works fine (besides constantly low batteries). But that's for the bank card only, doesn't work with the Visa CC. Actually, you need that thing to register your phone with the card. But you then you still have to use their phone app.
I looked up my last rant about it because I knew whenever I try to use it once a year it doesn't work and, well...
