😈 The Evil Ideas thread
-
Because using a backslash as an escape character is completely discoverable in a forum context.
Except when you expect it to work, but it doesn't. Consistently inconsistent, yadda, yadda...
-
Precisely my point.
WAIT
Discourse is an evil idea.
-
No, you don't need to escape it when you're doing code. But you do need to escape it to be normal to prevent Markdown being special.
Actually, backslashes do need to be escaped like that in Python.
-
-
They sometimes need to be escaped like that in PHP too. But that wasn't the point I was getting at...
-
Yes, because as I keep reiterating, I am TRWTF
-
EVERYTHING needs to be escaped in PHP.
-
But it depends whether you escape it with one or two backslashes as to whether you're using single or double quotes.

At least they're using OVR instead of INS.

Pretty much the same meaning.

This was mildly amusing 14 years ago. At least in the end it was Clippy who committed suicide. At least they're using OVR instead of INS.
OVR is a barrier to writing.

Why don't we move all of the discussion there? Just one big thread functioning like the world's most retarded IRC channel.

Easier than trying to follow > 10 different topics in Discourse. And that would have been the Discourse way: reply as new topic.

I only know the cool 3D-style clippy from later Office versions.
He looked more sympathetic.

I’ll just leave this here for the next Discourse XSS hole...

sounds intriguing, although I'd probably prefer death by chocolate. Hmm, they're not necessarily mutually exclusive...

Later Office versions don't work on NT 3.51.

I liked him better when he was Microsoft Bob.

Reminds me of Day of the Tentacle.

Say, aren't you Bernard Bernoulli, one of those kids that broke into our house?
-
That's not obscure enough. Yeah, things will break. Way too obviously. As soon as people realize that "it's almost as if every "true" literal is false", this will get fixed.
I wonder if
# define 8 7
would work.

Is it an image, or are you running an actual VM with this? I'm tempted to try it out, but these guys have already satisfied my curiosity:

It's running in a VM. And it doesn't work that well on 8 (it has problems launching it's subprocesses).
It works better on XP (and VMWare lets me set much higher resolutions on XP VMs):

We could build this in as an extension to Discourse and create a virtual Jeff Atwood that can say You're Doing It Wrong while you perform various actions in the forums in real-time!
-
Edit:
Edit 2: fixed balloon in second image
-
Someone please implement this! For once, I wish I knew Ruby on Rails.
Edit: Oh damn, now he's got the Jeff hair too. But I already liked this post! Well... +2
-
That's awesome. Post another reply so I can give you another like.
-
+1 since I have no likes.
-
Well, we could do a userscript at least. Pretty sure we can hijack enough events to make it make sense. But, unfortunately, I don't think JS plugins can be added through admin interface.

This should help with implementation:

Instead of or in addition to cornify?

That's up to him. I'm not that controlling.

Create an app to take a screen shot of Discourse, go through each pixel, see if any pixel within X pixels isn't white or the header blue, and see what percentage of the screen is in an abyss.

Create an app to take a screen shot of Discourse, go through each pixel, see if any pixel within X pixels isn't white or the header blue, and see what percentage of the screen is in an abyss.
Except the abyss isn't in the text.
-
You assume the inner-workings of this app incorrectly. It may be a rectangular area, or maybe within a given radius. But if there are only white/blue pixels in that area, then it's a useless bit of screen.
-
The abyss of Discourse is everything except the only thing that makes it worthwhile: the text where we complain about how terrible it is.
