🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD
-
What gets me worked up is why councils (Gateshead, Sunderland and Newcastle especially) have started putting traffic lights on them.
From what I understand of roundabouts, that kind of defeats the purpose. Traffic circles are supposed to help keep traffic moving, WTF would you want to put a light on one?

LOL...try driving around in Washington, DC.
No, but really, don't. It's a BAD IDEA.
This has to be one of the worst...
Hmm...this actually embeds in preview...will it in a cooked post?

I've only ever come across lights on the sort of really big roundabouts that I personally find are best considered as a series of T-junctions on a short, circular, one-way road.

Especially since he's likely to try doing so on the wrong side of the road. :P

Actually, in DC that might go unnoticed.

We've got those too

?
So, not only do you have to stop at the give-way lines if a car is coming from your right (i.e. it's already on the roundabout) you also have to stop if nothing is coming and the light is on red.
And if you're on the roundabout in front of a red light ( ), you mustn't move even if nothing is coming from your left.
Colour me unimpressed. We have plenty of those around here, although we drive on the right side of road.
How about roundabouts with a street going across them?
Or how about a roundabout with an inner roundabout?

(Some of the street view pictures are unfortunately old.
This is a saner version of whatever is happening in that intersection @boomzilla posted)You really need lights for those.

Don't even get in a freaking cab in DC. Don't travel to DC if you can keep from it. That place is just horrible.
DC doesn't even need another terrorist attack. On a long enough timeline, their transportation will kill everyone there anyway.

You Brits seem to have a love affair with roundabouts.
Milton Keynes especially—there's a rumour it was modelled on an American city with a "grid" downtown layout (LA, I think, or maybe SF?).
Except that being Brits, they put a roundabout at every intersection...
-
And having driven to Milton Keynes today, I can tell you a roundabout every half-mile is really fucking annoying.
Edit: YAY POST 6000!

The green thing says 6000, so it's post 6000 :P

That's pretty amazing.

Why can't companies that make stock images actually make believable ones?

Actually, that should match the rest of javascript semantic, that has notions of "equal" (
==

).

So what was

Dig into arrays, hashes, etc. Test all elements.

Why can't companies that make stock images actually make believable ones?
First they'd actually have to know something about the subject matter.

Isn't "at the roundabout take the second exit" basically, as far as MK is concerned, "Go straight over the roundabout." For 99.999999% of the roundabouts there?
At the larger ones, it's equivalent to "Go straight over the roundabout and get annoyed at the people getting the lanes wrong".
-
No, that's a specific roundabout, and all google was returning off the street were driving class youtube videos. No clue why those are a thing.
-
And having driven to Milton Keynes today, I can tell you a roundabout every half-mile is really fucking annoying.
Meh. You get used to it. If it's clear enough, you normally just need to slow down a bit anyway.

Their metro system is relatively good for a US city.

We have an Autobahn (well, probably multiple, but this is the only one I'm aware of) that starts/ends in a roundabout:

Plenty of those here; it's a common pattern. Is the roundabout itself motorway though? It's connected to all those other streets so I guess that it isn't actually and that's just yet another (small) Google Maps error.
-
I think Google Maps is the WTF in this case.
If only they had Streetview available on it, that way I could see where the signs are ...
-
The worst part about that has to be the missing links between the M62 and the M621 -- how pathetic is that? Did they run out of money before they could stick a slip road in from the westbound M621 to the southbound M62, at a bare minimum?
There's also enough room to adjust the M621 westbound slip to the A62 and mainline connector to the westbound M62 out southward a ways, get rid of that construction-equipment-mess between that connector and the M62, and shove a loop ramp in there to get the final connection made...
Filed under: apparently, the motorway boffins really don't know what they're doing!

They have traffic lights on that roundabout, don't they? Re-reading @PJH's post I realize he was venting about having to stop at red lights when no one's coming more than saying that lights at roundabouts are unusual. As an aside: wouldn't it be nice if embedded maps had a reset button? Something that would put me back at the place and zoom level the sharer set. It's easy getting lost.

There's not much call for that; the M621 connects back to the main motorway network a few miles east (after looping through Leeds); the traffic that would go the way that would require the connector takes other shorter routes. More useful would be connections between the M62 east (it looks like it's going SE, but that's just to go round a town) and the A650 W (which is the road just north of the M62 in that picture), which would get the main remaining through-traffic flow out of the complicated part of the junction.
Doing that would help reduce the amount of traffic on the M62 west of there, which is one of the busiest parts of the UK motorway network right now (it already has Active Management, hard shoulders in use as main lanes at peak times, and a HOV lane).
There aren't major flows from the A650 to the M621; most of the stuff that would use that uses a different road about 5 miles further north.
There's also enough room to adjust the M621 westbound slip to the A62 and mainline connector to the westbound M62 out southward a ways, get rid of that construction-equipment-mess between that connector and the M62, and shove a loop ramp in there to get the final connection made...
Joining to the A62 SW would be awkward because there's several major stores just there. Ikea, Toys'Я'Us, a large cineplex, that sort of thing. Plus there's really not that much long-distance traffic going that way; that mostly uses other junctions instead (in part because J27 is awful).
I hate that junction.

I wasn't saying that they were unusual. The complete opposite actually; and that's the problem. Especially when (1) they're turned on and (2) it's quiet....

Comes with any traffic light.
