I saw another defense of the non-metric system a couple of days ago. Seems there's some lottery thing where the prize can be as much as $1000 per degree of the day's official high temperature. I don't know about you, but $45,000 for a really hot day doesn't even come close to impressing me like $113,000 does.

cutting the passing period down from 5 minutes to 3
We never had passing periods in high school, though a bit over half the classes started after a break. I don't recall students taking long to get from class to class ever being a problem.

That's not a defence of non-metric, that's a very strong defence of SI. I would very much prefer getting $318 000 than $45 000!
Edit: or a defence of Rankine actually... $573 000 (rounding) sounds even better!

the administration had some crazy idea to increase the minutes of butts-in-seats by cutting the passing period down from 5 minutes to 3.
This is not in itself crazy. But why not just use that to increase the expected time of learning per period from 35 minutes to 37?

A metric 1000 dollars?
Surely you mean 952 guineas and 2 shillings per degree. Plus variable sales tax and mandatory 18% tip.
Oh wait, percentages are also metric...

12 and 20, that's almost metric-ish.
They should have used prime numbers or something, much better.

5/3 minutes and 35/37minutes? ?
We had 45 minutes per period, with a 15 minutes break. Double-passes of 90 minutes typically had a break in the middle, except for some stuff where breaks were difficult to do. Sports had 180 minute passes (but would use the accumulated breaks for changing/showering).
-
@cvi Periods were 40 minutes in my school, if they were 45 then you can replace those numbers with '40 minutes to 42' - point is that instead of making the period times weird to chop the transfer time, just make the teaching time a bit longer.

It's literally just four wives inside those things connecting the pins.
I think that's illegal in most, if not all, countries.
Most, sure. All, definitely not. Wikipedia says 58 countries have some form of legal recognition of polygamy.
But most of those are Muslim, which caps at 3 wives.
Where do you get 3? The Qur'an allows 4:
And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. [1]
Why do I have a feeling that this interpretation is just extreme literalism and "1, 2, 3 or 4" just means the same as "1, 2, or many"? Not that I'm assuming any rationality on whoever wrote the Quran, but why would 4 be ok but 5 not?

Unless there's more context in the preceding line (which I'm to find) it specifically allows from 2 to 4 wives. I guess you have to either marry at least two simultaneously or go without.

I read the Koran some 20 years ago, but I definitely remember there being discussions of number of wives up to 7 wives, but that it was said to be a bad idea for everyone but the most manly of men, because it'd be hard to keep the household in order then.
The discussion was actually fairly interesting, and went something like "2 wives is bad, because they'll gang up on you, 3 wives is bad because two of them will gang up on the third" and so on.
-
@Carnage by induction, any number of wives is bad for you.

I can't remember which number, but there was a recommended optimal number of wives that wasn't zero.
The Koran also started out pretty decent, and just got progressively more insane and oppressive the further into it you got.

That's an unusual sentence structure. I didn't know, so I did a little research, and AFAICT, you punctuated it correctly, although I'd probably make "Pfft" it's own little sentence, and start the question with a capital letter.

Sigh. The string of words inside the quotes is a question and the whole sentence is not, so the question mark goes inside.
I have issues, however, when both the quote and the sentence in which it is contained require non-period punctuation, as in:
Did I hear you ask "what's wrong with wearing Crocs?"?
or
How dare you tell me "go screw yourself!"!
or other combinations such as those calling for both the interro and the bang.
-
I have absolutely no problems with nested punctuation as in «How dare you tell me "go screw yourself!"!», but I can see how it can easily become annoying.
