🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD

The biggest problem with this is that they look like they're either liars or incompetent and they're burning through trust. Right now, the overall danger is pretty low in the US, but that could change, of course.

I totally agree with that, but at the same time people are panicking and attempting to impose quarantines on those that are returning from countries that are struggling with it (and also places that are handling fine or are just near by). So trying to clarify how it is actually transmitted is something that the CDC needs to do, they just went about it totally backasswards (they were doing explanations for docs and hospitals when talking to reporters and the general populace).
-
I'm not convinced the quarantines are wrong. Not that they need to be put into bubbles, but they probably shouldn't be going to bowling alleys and airplanes.
-
They are also being imposed on people that have tested negative multiple times since returning or are coming from places where it is contained (per WHO evaluation). I don't have a problem if someone comes back from where it is rampant (for some values thereof) and refuses tests; unfortunately those aren't the only people it is being done to.
-
Are they? I admit to not following too closely, but I was thinking of Nancy Snyderman and Kaci Hicox in particular, neither of whom fit your description.
-
Haven't followed that closely either, but I remember seeing a note about a nurse that had tested negative twice getting a nonbinding order for quarantine that they were attempting to make binding and another where a kid came back from Nigeria (where per WHO it is contained) who was banned from going to school.

Just imagining the smell is making me queasy. And actually he boarded the whale where the insides are exposed.
Ugh.

“Homeopaths worldwide have been mobilising their efforts toward gaining entrance in those countries affected,” the National Center for Homeopathy in the US said on its website. “The overriding goal is to investigate Ebola firsthand, and thereby determine which remedy or remedies are best for treating this disease.”

Darwinism?

even a practical darwinist* would say** that that is a terrible, terrible terrible thing to do to anyone.
* One who believes that darwins rule of natural selection should be followed in all cases and therefore no aid or humanitarian relief should be rendered anywhere for any reason. surprisingly i was unable to find a good google reference for that sect, which i guess means it was only ever fictional*** thank the goddess for that

they can die, sure, but what they would be doing to the people already living and dying there in the name of their insanity.... no. not cool.

Since you'd have to be smoking 10kg of the stuff to get the same amount of nicotine as a single cigarette, probably.

Muslims beat man with bottle for calling Islam "violent"
I heard something on the radio the other day about a group having beaten up someone while the attackers wore "Stop the Violence" t-shirts.Unfortunately I didn't get enough details about it to make a reliable web search.

But smoked aubergine makes an awesome dip. (I believe you need to mix with some other things; my fallible memory includes garlic and soft cheese among the ingredients.)

Bad idea: using a framework without knowing even the basics of your chosen language.
I think PHP frameworks might actually be lowering the barrier to entry even further for programmers.

Huh, isn't that part of their job?
-
And even then you replied in the wrong way. Don't give men fish, teach them how to mix their own dynamite.
-
Teaching PHP developers how to mix dynamite might greatly improve the ratio of good/bad PHP programmers.
-
Huh, isn't that part of their job?
I consider them as designed to bring structure to your code and to offer extra features on top of the language's tool set. Which of the following is easier for a complete novice developer?
/hello.php
<?php $name = isset($_POST['name']) ? $_POST['name'] : ''; ?> <form action="/hello.php" method="post"> <label for="name">Enter your name: </label> <input type="text" name="name" value="<?= htmlspecialchars($name); ?>" /> <input type="submit" value="Go" /> </form> <?php if (isset($_POST['name'])): ?> <?= 'Hello, ' . htmlspecialchars($name); ?>! <?php endif; ?>
or
/protected/controllers/HelloController.php
<?php class HelloController extends Controller { public function actionIndex() { $helloForm = new HelloForm(); if (isset($_POST['HelloForm'])) { $helloForm->attributes = $_POST['HelloForm']; $helloForm->validate(); } $this->render('index', array('helloForm'=>$helloForm)); } }
/protected/models/HelloForm.php
<?php class HelloForm extends CFormModel { public $name; public function rules() { return array( array('name', 'required'), ); } public function attributeLabels() { return array( 'name' => 'Enter your name', ); } }
/protected/views/hello/index.php
<?= $form = $this->beginWidget('CActiveForm'); ?> <?= $form->labelEx($helloForm, 'name'); ?> <?= $form->textField($helloForm, 'name'); ?> <?= $form->error($helloForm, 'name'); ?> <?= $this->endWidget(); ?> <?php if (Yii::app()->request->isPostRequest && !$helloForm->hasErrors()): ?> Hello, <?= CHtml::encode($helloForm->name); ?>! <?php endif; ?>
A framework introduces a lot of complexity, but once you've learned how to use it, it can bring better structure and maintainability to your code base. I would expect anyone using a framework to have a solid understanding of the underlying language before they attempt to learn how to make use of the extra tools.
It's amazing how many people are unable to differentiate between code that runs on the server and code that runs on the client because they've never had to write the code themselves, instead relying on framework features.
And even then you replied in the wrong way. Don't give men fish, teach them how to mix their own dynamite.
What's the correct response, for future reference?

A bottle opener, shaped like a wooden mallet.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1172715772/the-beer-hammer
Why buy an inexpensive, small, easy to store bottle opener like this:
...that you could also use to open cans of juice and such? Instead, you can have a gigantic bottle opener that you cannot take anywhere for the low, low price of $30.
-
because the hammer isn't fatal if you use it to bonk your buddy on the head when he's being annoyingly drunk.
-
Depends on how hard you hit them.
-
good point.
but it's easier to knock unconsious without inducing death with a blint object that has a relatively large surface area.
-
The line between unconscious and dead is a lot finer than you think...
-
but it's easier to knock unconsious without inducing death with a blint object that has a relatively large surface area.
mass is also an important consideration. The metal church keys I'm familiar with are much, much less massive than I would expect that mallet to be. I wouldn't expect the metal one to do much more than sting no matter how hard it was swung. Even swinging it pointy end first would draw blood, but not much else. OTOH, the mallet would make an excellent bludgeoning weapon.
-
it does take finesse. but it is doable. the trick is to minimize direct trauma to the brain case.

why bad idea?
@accalia also wants to know who she has to pass to get the magic 2^16 posts.

It'd end with you and me spamming a lot.

have you seen my average daily post count? without spamming it should only take me about 3.5 years to get to 2^16 posts!

Yeah, but you're not even at 2^12 yet, which is next for me.
