THE BAD IDEAS THREAD

@Rhywden Granted, my information about it is very limited, but a fried of mine went to the Broadway show a little while ago and when he saw it the cast couldn't even sing in sync or on key.
-
@hungrier It's a musical about cats, so that should have hardly been surprising...

@hungrier said in THE BAD IDEAS THREAD:
One major difference between physical keyboards and touchscreen virtual ones is that the latter doesn't have tactile feedback. For the most part, this is regarded as a negative, and hardware and software makers have tried various methods to make up for this deficiency.
Samsung has taken a bold, unprecedented new stance: What if
instead ofin addition to having no tactile feedback, you could also remove the visual component of typing on a keyboard?I can see that working at least as well as glide typing works. For an adept touch typist, I could see it working better than a touch keyboard without any tactile feedback. You don't have to hit the correct area of a capacitive screen; you just make a gesture with the correct finger.
That said, a capacitive screen could probably work equally well, if the keys were optimally placed. You'd almost have to train it by typing some sample text to get a sort of "heat map" for each key's location, so that it's scaled to the position and size of your hands and all of the keys are exactly where your fingers tend to hit them. Then it'd have to translate on the fly because your hands won't stay perfectly stationary, so the keys will tend to need to shift around a bit as your hands do.
The biggest difference would be that it could see which fingers you're moving. A touchscreen can't tell if you used the finger that corresponds to an E but ended up touching closer to the R; it's probably going to call that an R, but a camera can tell that it's supposed to be an E.

Looking at this pattern...
I bet inverting the depth map so that the circles are raised, but still having the 3 holes in each of them, would render the grater more or less functional, while still looking almost the same.

@boomzilla Ehhh... There's worse things, I guess?
At least for it's possible fun:
Then there's this:

Yes, and the Nope thread is .

@boomzilla Assuming those are pasta in tomato sauce, that could actually work pretty well in a gazpacho.

@boomzilla Assuming those are pasta in tomato sauce
For sufficiently low values of "pasta" and "tomato sauce", sure. That's Spaghetti-Os, or some generic knockoff thereof.
-
@remi it's these:
Which are good on their own. I just wouldn't use them as ice cubes.

For certain definitions of good. 7-year me, yes. 58-year me, not so much.

I mean...yeah, you should get the ones with meatballs, obviously.

Which one. there's..... eleven.... eleven of them (i think) some of them are good, others are bad, and a few are horrifying abominations.... so you're going to have to specify which movie or group of movies you mean.....
All star wars were bad, boring movies

Note: there are basically two competing brands of Spaghetti-Os with meatballs. Chef Boy-Ar-Dee are truly awful. Campbell's version is the one that used to be sold as Franco-American, and are probably the ones you remember from childhood.

i keep a can of that in my desk..... as motivation to NOT forget my lunch and need to eat it.
so far it's very effective!

Bad idea: Assuming your docker container is always running just because its' restart policy is set to "Always". Then, setting up a cron job that runs every five minutes that normally doesn't generate any output except when it's not running (because then there will be an error like "Address doesn't exist").
Yay self-spamming!
Edit: By the time I'll be able to fix it, I expect to have received 552 emails...

Indeed. I grew up thinking that's what spaghetti was supposed to taste like. That's all my family bought (actually, I think we mostly bought the not-Os, but Franco-American), because they were the only brand that didn't have garlic, which my mom was very allergic to. And before you ask, no, I don't know why she didn't make good homemade sauce with ingredients she could eat; it never occurred to me to ask her.

That one's easy: it's because such a thing is not possible without garlic

Eh. After hearing certain entities gush about it I decided to give it a go.
It's kinda interesting but fucking annoying almost every step of the way.
My biggest peeve at the moment is that to change literally any part of the configuration of the container your better off fucking destroying it and creating it from scratch all over again. The idea of "fix it by changing a few files" seems to be completely woman to the Docker devs.

Fucking autocorrect. Why did it think I meant 'woman' when I typed" Allen"?

Maybe Allen is a woman? Who are we to assume?
edit: Alanis Morissette called. She's trying to find some cutlery.

It often is easier to do things like that. It seems kind of wasteful in some ways, but always starting from a known point can be very helpful.
The only place I've "used" docker is on TDWTF, and that's mostly been @ben_lubar who's done the work (duh).

@boomzilla I used to know someone several years ago, who would be in her mid-30s now, whose grandmother was dying of lung cancer. She had taken up smoking, way back in the day, on the medical advice of her doctor, who told her it would help with her asthma.
-
@Mason_Wheeler Makes perfect sense. It treated her asthma, allowing her to live long enough to get cancer

@Tsaukpaetra Do you know why Karl Benz chose gasoline to run the Motorwagen's motor on?
Because it was a common cleaning solvent, easily available at the local drugstore, that happened to burn hot and (relatively) clean. So it's not too surprising to see people still cleaning with it today.
-
@Mason_Wheeler said in THE BAD IDEAS THREAD:

Oh, that's not what I'm protesting. He just wasted like, $6 of gas right there! That's enough to get me to work and back with a side trip to the grocery store and movie theater!
-
@Tsaukpaetra Somebody in the YT comments said that the country where this was filmed likely had lower gas prices than water prices.
Saudi Arabia seems to have a price of $0.31 per gallon for example.

I seem to remember they poison it with methanol to get around even higher duty on consumption alcohols. Though some methanol content could very well be a side-effect of the manufacturing process as well.
This reminds me of a story about a Russian rocket complex where large amounts of liquid propellant were unaccounted for. The rocket ran on ethanol.
