@Rhywden It'll never work. The point of Lime and friends isn't just that you can leave them anywhere, it's that you can pick them up anywhere too. If the bike can only be picked up at a charging station, that's half the fun gone.
Yeah, it's no fun knowing where your transportation is.
-
@pie_flavor said in THE BAD IDEAS THREAD:
@Keith Don't hospitals function basically that exact way?
Fire Stations are already commonly designated as places to drop babies. This seems to just give them a better place to drop them as opposed to leaving them outside or whatever to be found whenever someone happens by next.
-
@boomzilla The app tells you where either way, either by finding the charging station or by finding the discarded bike.

-
@Tsaukpaetra scanning a list of Intel processors and architectures for a pun opportunity… nothing presenting itself so far
-
@Tsaukpaetra Clearly that's already defective, as one corner of the package has been chopped off. Dunking it in ranch dip is not a good idea, but it's not going to make anything (except maybe the rest of the ranch dip) worse than it already is.

It's better than the stock Intel thermal paste.
Except if the dip is too hot, it may suffer a Meltdown

Too right. Stick to tomato ketchup, like a good guy.

Are you talking about British chips or American chips? This looks more like an American chip, and I've never heard of anyone dipping those in ketchup.

I dunno. Ketchup has a lower pH. You might be off with ranch dressing there. (I couldn't find a good figure of the thermal conductivity of ranch dressing. Ketchup apparently has around 0.6W/(m·K), which is a lot lower than most thermal paste.)

I know exactly which one I want on my chips!

One of my kids do but he puts ketchup on just about everything. Yuck.

I was told that as a kid I did that (everything). I refuse to believe that.

@Tsaukpaetra The real bad idea is dipping it back in after already having taken a bite out of the chip

"Everything" is one of those contractable words that used to annoy me, like when my mother would say that I got spilled milk "all over the floor".

As a kid I put ketchup or bbq sauce on cold deli meat sandwiches. It's not bad, but it's not a culinary wonder either.
-
@hungrier The Mythbusters busted double dipping. It can and does impart germs, but the amount is negligible compared to the germs normally present in dip.
Doesn't mean you should just double dip willy-nilly (especially if you have an infectious disease), but still it's usually nowhere near as bad as people scream it out to be.
-
As I kid I used to put ketchup on tomatoes, for some wonderful redundancy.

I'm pretty sure I put mustard (yellow) on tomatoes.

Corn on the cob is traditionally eaten with butter, but in modern times people use margarine instead.
Which is made from corn oil.
What the hell is the point?

Those are not people. Real people use butter. (looks at thread) Oh ok, right place.

I know, right? I see no point in ever using margarine either.

homeopathic water cooling: it works but you have to use very small amounts of very hot water, which causes the cpu to cool down. Somehow.

Mistyping "-j6" to "-j65" when running make.
This machine only has 16GB of RAM ... and those ran out. Firefox was the first casualty when the OOM killer decided to free up some space.
-
@cvi That reminds me of the time I tried to allocate an 8gb rx_ring interface on a VM with 6gb ram.
That gets some interesting failure modes since the system call in question cannot fail in that way. So everything else gets killed and then you end up with your entire userspace consisting of one process which is hung in that system call. And maybe init.
On a different occasion, the kernel decided to free up the necessary memory by flushing some pages to a remote NFS server which was unavailable. That also took a reboot to resolve, but then NFS servers which have gone away tend to need a reboot to resolve anyway.

Where's the Shared Memory, Carl?

It would have been fun to try that on one of the machines at work, which was specced to run big Python code (some of our analyses get pretty chunky) in VMs and consequently has around 1TB of memory or so, and lots of CPUs too. (Our even-bigger machine can't run a standard compiler at all because of its weird memory architecture.)
