I just tried to use a network projector

This thing is worthless anyway. I was hoping it could somehow do video over LAN so we don't have to bother finding the correct VGA, HDMI, etc. cables when plugging in a laptop.
Nope. All the LAN interface does it allow you to control the input, keystone, brightness, etc. It's just a stupid replacement for the IR remote control.

Bud we arr kno IE maks best quarity

This dialogue just support broken English for good quality.
EDIT: I also like how this is a sort of implicit "fuck you" to Mac and Linux users.
"You have to use Internet Explorer. Oh, you don't have that because you're not using Windows? How unfortunate."
-
For what it's worth, I got the exact same error using IE-whatever is on Windows 7.
-
Last time I tried, Quality Centre makes a similar complaint (except it wants IE10) when you try and launch it with IE11.
-
-
And Outlook Web Access won't run the enhanced client because the browser is "too old" (i.e not IE6 or later).
Some internal system we use also needs IE9 compat or it flat out refuses to work. And Firefox doesn't even see any of our internal pages - it gets 404 from our proxy.
That's not to mention one app we wrote which pretty much uses and abuses every single IE7 quirk we could find. It loads in Chrome, and then you can't go anywhere because the dropdown menus won't unroll. Or a modal won't show, if you just type in the URL (and are lucky enough not to hit a page which gives you NullRef when you hit it out of order). Or the elements' heights will be utterly messed up, with scrolls inside scrolls inside scrolls. Or events will fail to fire due to us working around the buggy IE
change
handler.

The "Quality" in the name of that product does definitely not refer to the product itself.

I’d never heard of ViewSonic, but took a guess viewsonic.com might help me find out what it is you’re talking about …
To be fair that’s not viewsonic.com but viewsoniceurope.com, which I got redirected to automatically. And bonus-WTF: the URL of the error page is http://www.viewsoniceurope.com/uk/error/
-
ViewSonic used to make budget LCD screens though I haven't seen any in several years now. Apparently they also made budget DLP projectors.
-
I have an old CRT from them. 17" 1600x1200. Still amazes me that that ancient hardware still has far better graphics than many of the monitors out there now. (It now sits quietly in the closet.)
-
Our architect owns a big full HD plasma screen. He's praying it will never break, because nothing like it is made today.
-
You can still get them. Expensive and specialist so you'll never see them in shops, but big, high resolution PDPs are still made.
TV studios use them.

User Agent spoofing FTW!
Actually, forget the "spoofing". Why is the User-Agent header still not deprecated? Pick a string that older web-apps accept (most likely one pretending to be IE) and use it for all HTML5 browsers.

Then you hit the problem from the other side - such amazing apps as Discourse will flat-out refuse to work on you if you do so.
-
New apps can detect this particular string and serve the "good" version of the page.
-
But we already are at the point where there's probably no such string. There are probably many sites that work only on IE6 (and maybe higher IEs), and there are already many sites that won't work on IE6 (and probably other IEs).
And because of the Rule of ADD, half of them probably won't get updated.
-
What kind of fool checks the user agent string these days?

All browsers are actually pretending to be Netscape Navigator 4 (but really this other thing). Take a look at the UA header some time...
-
I have. In fact, this is Opera's UA:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/39.0.2171.95 Safari/537.36 OPR/26.0.1656.60
There's 9 names there. Don't see what this has to do with pretending to be IE. Just have "MSIE 8.0" somewhere too so the pages who check for that can find it.
-
Hmm., OK, I was wrong. But you can still see that Mozilla thing there. That merely means "I'm a browser, not a robot or WebService client or some other malarkey."
-
KHTML, like Gecko
My favourite part of the 20 year backwards compatibility fudge that is the UA string
-
Discourse matches the user-agent against
/iPhone|Android|Mobile/
and not/iPad/
to default you to mobile view.If it gets it wrong, all touch devices get a "Mobile View" link in the menu.
-
-
You heard it here first! iPads are not mobile!
-
@riking said:

So Android tablets get mobile and iPads don't?
Don't think so. My Android tablet gets desktop.
-
heh. iPads get the "touch desktop" view, which is the same as on my laptop with a touchscreen.
Can't say it's the best decision ever, but meh.
