I feel like I'm being an idiot...

So I have windows, and like any Power User™ I save everything to the Desktop (from whence it will theoretically be deleted or more properly stored at a later date). But since icons are so inefficient when dealing with a bunch of files, I often prefer to work in an explorer window instead of on the actual desktop. So in the top left corner of my desktop is a shortcut to the desktop.
Is there some Ctrl+Alt+triple right click-ish shortcut to open the desktop in Windows Explorer from the desktop, or is this really the way this needs to work?

shortcut to open Desktop in Windows Explorer from the desktop
I suspect being at the desktop and wanting to open the desktop in an Explorer window from there is a bit of a niche use.
Can you not just add a shortcut key to the shortcut?

Or simply use a scratch folder instead of cluttering up the desktop?
-
I did think that (because that's how I do it) but having a shortcut from the desktop to another folder and a shortcut from the desktop to itself only really offers a aesthetic improvement, so didn't suggest it.
-
Oh shit, I forgot I could do that. Perfect. I can just bury the actual shortcut somewhere in win8's clusterfuck of a start "menu" now.
-
Or pin it to a jump list
-
You could add the Desktop as a toolbar to the taskbar.

Fuck yeah. I turn off UAC and use
C:\Program Files
-
I map
C:\Users\Jaloopa\Documents
toC:\Windows
. It's my computer, I can do what I want with it!

You seem to be implying that these would be unwise things to do.

Yo dawg, I heard you like desktops...
(Someone had to do it!)
-
C:\Windows also makes a good app directory for hosting web sites once you give
Everyone
Full Control access!
-
The desktop is actually the merger of two directories. The first is
%USERPROFILE%\Desktop
. The second isC:\Users\Public\Desktop
(at least on Windows 7 it is... and doesn't appear to have its own environment variable) and is shared by all users.
-
Yeah that's been like that since at least XP (Where it was %USERPROFILE% and All Users). Probably 2000 as well, but I can't remember.
-
You could place a shortcut on the taskbar, then use (Win) + 1 to open it.
-
Why not Windows + E then click on the sidebar?
-
You are trolling us, right?
I troll people, and we can smell our own...

or use Autohotkey to launch explorer.exe with the appropriate path?

Explorer does take command-line parameters. You could actually make a shortcut to the desktop manually.
-
are you sure about that?

Where do you think I got the idea?
Open a see em dee prompt, type in
explorer /root,c:\users\accalia\desktop
and tell me what you see. Feel free to substitute your actual username if you don't want to see an error.
I used to use this in XP as the fastest way to get a C:\ window.
-
The instruction, it did nothing.

Quicker than Win+R, C:\Enter?

Windows + R, C, :, Enter
EDIT: Hanzoed!
-
I had to tack a
/n
before the/root
because I had Explorer windows open already and it seemed to do nothing. So what I did was:
explorer /n /root,%USERPROFILE%\Desktop

Quicker than Win+R, C:\Enter?
Considering I had it as a pinned icon on my taskbar, meaning it needs one click, yeah.
-
my mistake. i somehow read that as Explorer.exe does not accept command line parameters

Looks like I had the exact sequence of commands wrong, but yeah, you can make it work. I think there's a GUID version too.
