Closed Poll: Do you use the numerical keyboard?
-
The problem isn't that it draws arrows, the problem is that it takes the entire vertical space of the screen to do it. Meaning, it covers up the top level menus. Meaning, you can't simply scrub left or right while the higher-than-screen menu is open. You scrub the menus left to ri-- oh wait there's a giant thing in my way so now I have to scan PAST the next couple menus so it goes away, then scan BACKWARDS to get back where I was.
This is shit that Apple got right in 1984, and Microsoft got right in Windows 3 in 1990. I have no fucking clue how they managed to get this wrong. It's shockingly incompetent.
Anyway, my basic argument is: if the developers of Notepad++ got something as fucking basic as MENUS wrong, what else is wrong? Buried deep down where it's less detectable? It's obviously written by incompetent idiots, I have zero faith that the only incompetence is here in the menu bar.
-
-
ah, that's a lot worse than I thought. That is pretty awful.
Now I know what I'm looking for I can make the File menu hide the File menu button. It also goes over the task bar, unless you use Aero Peek to make it go under, at which point you lose access to the bottom few menu options
-
Funny enough, the menu thing in Audacity is unreproducible on Linux.
-
I did SFDC development at my last job. When recruiters ask me about it, I tell them that I will not do it again. I only leave it on my resume so it doesn't look like a black hole for that time period.
-
well it's not as fun as playing KSP but it's better than a swift kick in the gonads (or so i'm told anyway)

I'd say it's about on par. Same level of pain, just not as swift.

Buttuming that
numerical keyboard == 10-key

I've never seen a keyboard with a
10
key.Filed Under: No patience for trolls today

Fair enough. I get what you're saying but its only the File menu and it's bothered me literally never. I rarely use the File menu since the most common functions there I use can be done from the keyboard.
-
that brings me here: http://smile.amazon.com/Microsoft-Keyboard-English-10-Key-Windows/dp/B004YZJM38
sooo.... i assume you mean the 10key are the ten keys [0-9] in the numeric keypad section of the keyboard?
-
What's a menu?
/me uses ViM for preferences and hasn't had to reread the MAN page in almost 26 months

Yeah, the section just below the status lights.
-
What status lights?
Actually that's my one complaint about that kbd, no status lights, other than that is awesome!

Yeah, sure, change the reference kbd!
The 10-key is the area I've outlined in red.

Wow, that actually works as expected.

i'm still missing the status lights.
Try looking at the first keyboard you f**king linked to.

thats a pretty picture. but that doesn't help me find them on my keyboard (i'll save you the search, mine doesn't have them at all. Why? i don't know. some idiot engineer i assume.)
-
It used to happen on the "pick which language to do highlighting for" menu, which you (or I at least, when I used it), used like 30 times a day. It sounds like they "fixed" it by making the menu shorter instead of, you know, JUST FUCKING FIXING IT.
-
It might be that my resolution is high enough for that to not be a problem. That would be annoying there.

Assuming nobody's pointed it out downthread, you all got trolled--excellently, btw--by @chubertdev, who meant he had never seen a keyboard with a key labelled "10", not "a keyboard without a numeric keypad."
I mentioned upthread having a tenkeyless keyboard, and so probably did others.
There are also keyboards without the arrows and ind/del block, although I can't imagine why.

I think that my filed under acknowledged that likelihood:

I use Notepad++... does that make me an infidel too? Because I'd hate to have to go Connor MacLeod on anyone here.
Some would say you must hate life and native menus.

More that you should, I think. Though since I'm so far behind in catching up around here, they already said it in this thread before I warned you.

Why not go Duncan MacLeod?
After all, Connor did give his head to Duncan, making DUncan the more powerful one
I really hope no one needed that spoiler.

The TV series didn't happen. Neither did the second film. Neither did any film after Highlander: The Sorcerer, which was still terrible but not as terrible as The Quickening.
In fact, let's just say the first film was the only thing that happened.

@PJH, can we have a badge for people who won't STFU about the Mac Classic?
-
Are you some sort of spurned ex lover of @blakeyrat? You seem to be following him around just to troll
-
The TV series didn't happen.
I heard a sudden commotion, as if hundreds of thousands (or so I assume) of women cried out in sadness.
-
If I were gay, I would have better taste than that.
-
It's not ViM, but it will get the job done when i don't have access to any of my *nix enviroments.
I was going to say vim for Windows is a thing, but @loopback0 already said it, so I won't repeat what he said. :P

i'll give you a cookie if you manage 256 insightful, mostly on topic, and interesting posts in T-1000
That's a very high bar you set, and with a mere cookie as a reward. On-topic is meaningless in that topic, but insightful and interesting ... where have that many insightful and interesting posts been made anywhere in TDWTF, much less by one person in one night?

I've changed it, will give it a go and report back.
Do your eyes a favour and install Envy Code R.

So did @Arantor try Consolas or the other one and what was the result?

I have no idea. @Arantor: care to weigh in?
I kind of necro'd this topic, so I didn't really expect someone to follow up on my post

You Must Be New HereTM. Once you necro a thread it's fair game to pick up the conversation or move it as whimsy strikes. Plus, I CBA to see if @Arantor actually ever replied.

Envy Code R.
It gets the usual stuff right (O vs 0, I vs l vs 1), but it looks horrendously ugly.

As it should be!
I never got the reasoning behind "if an arbitrary amount of time has passed, that automatically means a conversation cannot be continued in an interesting/useful fashion".
-

Why exactly? The two main differences I see in comparison with other monospaced fonts are:
- thinner lines to draw the characters: I don't mind that. It looks less "heavy". Even at 8pt it's still readable
- characters cells are less wide: I consider that a feature. If I can get more characters in my terminal/editor/... horizontally before wrapping or scrolling happens, I'm happy
De gustibus non disputandum est, of course.
-
The middle parts of the letters are too tall, imo. And the
i
s are a bit ... weird.
-
I never got the reasoning behind "if an arbitrary amount of time has passed, that automatically means a conversation cannot be continued in an interesting/useful fashion".
I get it, but I don't always agree with it. I assume it's because I'm a person and don't always act rationally. I think people get upset when they don't notice it's an ancient conversation. And maybe people with email notifications, too.
-
I think people get upset when they don't notice it's an ancient conversation.
This I don't get. What's upsetting about a conversation from some time ago vs. a conversation of a few hours old?
I can understand getting upset because of the content of a conversation... But that has nothing to do and doesn't change with its age.And maybe people with email notifications, too.
Myeah, I'd assume they only turn on email notifications for conversations they're interested in (or conversely: turn off notifications for conversations they're not interested in), modulo Discourse deciding it knows better.I really want to understand this, but DOES NOT COMPUTE for me.
