The Official Status Thread

Did you let @accalia and @RaceProUK choose your latest avatar?

Status: Been trying to work up the motivation to do stuff, and failing. Listening to random things out of the Song of the Day thread instead, which is much more fun.

my "callback pyramid" is significantly shorter.
That's what she said. She also said that's a really weird name for it.

β¦so you wrote a
foreach
loop in CPSβ¦ as you doβ¦
-
It's a language that has for loops, but this lets me run one test per frame so the program doesn't freeze up while it's testing.
-
Is that... is that Lua? You should be ashamed!
-
Did the
```lua
tip you off?
-
Not as much as
ipairs
, which had the advantage of being visible without needing rawz.
Also I know Lua when I see it. I've... seen things...
Fairy fluff
Is this still the status thread, btw? Post count seems about right, but the special CSS has gone away (on Chrome mobile at least...)
No repro on Chrome Windows.
Huh. Well, whatevs. Status: this afternoon is going on soo loong...
Status: Positively bewildered at the level of shoulder-aliening I was just assaulted with on a video game forum. A user asked a relatively simple question about a game mechanic and I answered. I should note that I made absolutely no comments about real-life science, Tom Cruise movies, or the intelligence level of the game developers.
A third user jumped in and attacked me with a bunch of ad-hominem non-sequitur strawmen about how I don't understand real-life science, I think the game developers are morons, and that I obviously think a scene from a certain Tom Cruise movie (which I've never seen) can't be accurate.
How much you need to pass ?
Status: everyone else in my house is asleep. I am not downloading or uploading anything other than this speed test. Everyone in my city is probably asleep except me.
This is the highest speed I've ever gotten. But I'm not sure why "up to 6Mb" means "less than 5Mbps" or why "up to 768KB" means "less than 81 KB/s". Hey, at least I got an F+. That's almost not a total failure!
Status: Just apologized to 5 different people and remembered why you should turn off your phone before getting drunk.
Status: So I have a Python program which loads a C library (libclang) in order to parse a C header file and in return generate C source code to build a C library which can be loaded from a Lua script which will then be able to create objects whose memory pattern matches the C structs in the header file.
My head is starting to hurt...
Status: So I eventually gave up trying to use this thing and rewrote the parts I needed from scratch. Doing this took me less time than the time I spent trying to get this framework to work.
Also, TRWTF is
ctypes
doing arrays bound checks, which makes accessing a C variable-length structure quite cumbersome...
Filed under: `ctypes.cast(self.items, ctypes.POINTER(Item))[index]`
Sigh.
Hey, you morons get mad when I make assumptions, so I don't. For all I know he typed
vacuumdb /this is iinvalid junk shit hahahaha bugs bugzz pase this idiots --help
.
Maybe he typed in
vacuumdb ββhelp
...
-
What did you type in?
vacuumdb -v --help
-v is verbose. I guess --help needs to be first or only argument or something...
There! See? Fuck you RacePro Donkey! Fuck you AliceStiffed! BLAKEYRAT WINS AGAIN!
I was referring to the ; thing - he might have pasted in en-dashes instead of -
-
Look, the point is: if you're trying to communicate a WTF, you need to provide enough information for the viewer to figure out if it's a WTF. We do not have telepathic powers.
-
That's why I proposed an illogical niche case that could have caused it and didn't say anything constructive.
-
Use Firefox.
There! See? Fuck you RacePro Donkey! Fuck you AliceStiffed! BLAKEYRAT WINS AGAIN!
-v is a valid argument. It's not some zero char half-pipe whatever. They should have parsed it just fine. My crappy bash scripts can parse that shit.
I didn't say it wasn't a WTF.
I said you didn't provide enough information to tell whether it was a WTF.
And now I'm saying you have the reading comprehension skills of a marmoset.
Are you saying martians are illiterate?
reading comprehension skills of a marmoset
Pity Google returns nothing amusing for that search β mostly "Pay us moneyz and well booster you're reding skilz" and a government-funded study of "Object permanence in adult marmosets."
-
-v --help doesn't make sense though.
-v --help is Google.
Although to be fair, this is a case that should be easily handled.
-
Y'know what it is (most likely)? It's
vacuumdb
passing--help
as a switch to whatever-v
triggers
Searching leads to thisβ¦
I agree, but actually using a competent library for argument parsing would keep this from being an issue.
-
Either you looked through more pages of results than I did (I didn't go beyond the first), or your Google search history is more ... interesting ... than mine, in ways I really don't want to know about.
-
-v --help doesn't make sense though.
-v --help is Google.
Although to be fair, this is a case that should be easily handled.
That was some leftover from earlier.
This is a common enough situation. You start writing a command, then need to see switches again and add a quick
-h
or--help
to what you've written. Most tools handle that just fine.
Please tell me that you know what he actually thought it was?
Iterative Expansion?
Income Expander?
It's Extra-important?This story needs to come full-circle...
I didn't dig too far, because his idiocy knows no bounds and it usually ends up with me being annoyed.
He went "Oh, I thought it was about desktop personalisation and no technical impact so $USELESS_BA is looking at it".I left it there.
-
You are a stronger man than I. I would have had to know, and those pursuits would probably lead to me having to find a new job before I had planned.
-
Making him look an idiot is a bit of a sport. When he does it for you, it takes the fun out of it, and you're just left with the annoyance.
I literally parked on a sheet of ice this morning and almost fell three times getting my bag out of the passenger side.
Thirty seconds ago, I got this email from the facilities team:
Please be careful and use caution when you are walking outside and driving. Sometime in the next couple hours we are expecting a wintery mix of snow, and freezing rain. The roads and sidewalks will most likely be icy and slick. The maintenance team is addressing areas of concern throughout the day, as always. Lunchtime travel may be challenging. So please use caution if you are going out for lunch.
I have a doctor's appointment mid-day.... I expect to be filing an incident report this afternoon >.>
