The bar was positively infested by drowzees tonight. Seriously. Dozens of the fuckers.

One of my sister's friends was catching a weedle in my house and now there are ants and flies everywhere.
You can see the flypaper in the mirror in my recent Lounge photo.

So you killed him for trespassing and left his corpse to rot which attracted the ants and flies? Thats kinda morbid!
Filed Under: Can you catch those, too?

I tried, but the pokeball just smushed the fly :/

Used to play Ingress. Now frowning at all the nerds congregating to my previous office/couch portals.
-
@cvi So I assume they used Ingress portal locations as a basis for Pokemon locations?

Apparently. One news article mentioned that there's significantly fewer Pokemon locations, that is, apparently only about 40% of the portals were used. It also mentions that pokemons (or whatever) typically spawn in XM field locations.
-
This pokemon go game requires you to be walking around, right? That's why I'm ignoring it, I'm not going outdoors.

Ok, that joke is on me. When writing this I didn't even know whether or not pokemon go had been released around here.
On my way to grab some lunch, I just ran across a gaggle of 5-6 people zooming about with their phones talking about how you can restart the app and have some ${pokemon thing} remain there.

In the Netherlands there have been disruptions to the trains because of Snorlax being on a rail bridge somewhere and people being stupid enough to actually trying to catch him.

How the screw are battles supposed to work?
-
You beat on your screen (tap the opposing Pokemon), until the bars under your Pokemon's health bar build up and then you can press and hold until the top/bottom blacks out and then release to do your secondary (stronger) attack. If the secondary has several segemented bars, you can use it once per segment without having to tap to use the weaker attack and rebuild energy. If it has one long bar, you have to build the entire bar before you can use it.
You can also (allegedly) dodge incoming attacks by swiping left and right.
In general, higher CP does more damage and has more hit points. The type chart from the traditional games does still seem to be in effect, as well, though Pokemon can have offensive moves from a different type than what their defensive type is, so it can be a little difficult to predict which incoming damage type(s) the enemy Pokemon will be using.

@izzion Ah. Wonderfully explained in the "how to battle tutorial" that they.. oh wait, they didn't explain that at all.

Status: Seems Blue came by and took the gym near work from Yellow.
-
@Tsaukpaetra Today I walked to a gym Red had going that had pretty low-level pokemon (by comparison). only to find it was located int he center of an employees-only park, behind a thick fence. Whelp. That explains that.

@Yamikuronue said in The Official Pokèmon Go Thread:

Like, less than frickin' thousand-CP-level poke? I literally can't find a gym with pokemon less than 500 CP...
-
@Tsaukpaetra Like, 2-300 level poke.
Tomorrow blue team at work is planning a raid on the spot they took over on Monday, which has been taken over by Yellow again since then. There's like, 12 of us, but it's like, four whole blocks from work and it's hot out, so we'll see how this goes.

@Yamikuronue said in The Official Pokèmon Go Thread:

Wait, how does that work? They all attack the gym at the same time or something?
My highest CP pokemon is a 184 Primeape, though I'll admit I haven't been walking to the far corners of the earth looking for Mewtwo...

@Tsaukpaetra said in The Official Pokèmon Go Thread:

I dunno, they're going to teach me tomorrow :D There's some way to group-attack the gym though

Meh. Today I think it was only 110° out.

Hey, if the forum doesn't limit large images, whose fault is it?
-
@Tsaukpaetra Hence why you're the new @ben_lubar
Because you're at fault for these scandalously long screenshot posts.

Don't be silly. Water doesn't boil until at least 373.2.

Well the cup of water I spilled seems to have cried up. No word on the oceans though...

Heh. The true Ingress experience is something along the lines of thinking "let's quickly go for a short walk to the closest portal and take it over" sometime in the evening and then returning home 3:30am after forming an ad-hoc raiding party with other "agents" and walking for the better part of 5 hours with a group of (formerly) complete strangers. Snow/rain/other extreme weather optional.
Anyway ... you mentioned group raids. I read somewhere that Pokemon Go didn't have any chat functions. Is that the case?
-
@cvi said in The Official Pokèmon Go Thread:

Yes. But the radius for being in the same spot is so tight, you can just talk to each other out loud, with your actual mouth.

Too bad, the kinda-city-wide faction chat was a nice feature. Though, I guess with the much larger number of players, it'd be a mess.

Restaurants are buying Lure Modules to draw customers.
-
@FrostCat I'd totally do that if I had a place that sold food, especially cheap food. It's real easy to rationalize "I'll just grab a snack while I catch pokemon".

I used to play Ingress too (Founder badge) but I'm fascinated by the number of people at the points of interest now. It's a social phenomenon the likes of which I've never seen before and I think it's pretty cool, albeit likely to be short-lived. Ingress didn't catch on as fast, but I think its demographic was more limited. There wasn't the nostalgia factor that draws in everyone from the low teens to forty-fifty somethings.
That's the only explanation I have when the God damn thing doesn't work.
@Tsaukpaetra said in The Official Pokèmon Go Thread:

You're lucky the battle even ended; three times out of four, it seems, a round will end with both Pokémon stuck at 0 hp and they'll just stay there until you force quit the app.
@Tsaukpaetra said in The Official Pokèmon Go Thread:

Yeahhh, that's an issue. The Ingress tutorial covers all of the game's actions at least, even if it goes somewhat wonky. I've seen people try to use the Pokémon lyrics to explain it ("you teach me and I'll teach you") like the game assumes you'll join up with other players to learn more, but that seems retconnish to me. :P

Well, that sucks. That portal could be reported in Ingress to remove it, but I don't know if it would also remove it from Pokémon Go. It'd also probably take a few months.
-
The three closest gyms to work now all have varying Eevolutions. Someone's showing off.

Yeah, I find it pretty fascinating too. I'm curious as to whether it will last or not. It had a pretty damn explosive start, so I'm guessing that the number of people playing it will fall in a while, but who knows? Ingress was a bit of the opposite, with it being invite-only at the beginning, and then slowly gathering a following. But (as far as I know) it's still going strong, and has apparently fairly regular events in various places.
I'm kinda wondering if we'll see an explosion of such AR games. Niantic definitively has an upper hand here, I doubt anybody else has the data (= portal locations) they have. Probably won't stop people from trying to produce a number of shitty clones, though...
I think its demographic was more limited.
Maybe? I met all kinds of people playing, but I guess that you needed a reason to be sucked into it in the first place.
There wasn't the nostalgia factor that draws in everyone from the low teens to forty-fifty somethings.
I'll cite XKCD with saying that I'm not and never was into pokemon. ;-)
-
@cvi I still say AR is limited while it is not head mounted, capable of precise position tracking, and sticks to your face so you don't have to hold a phone in front of you. Right, @Tsaukpaetra ?
