Scenario: a git repo contains a long history of files with CRLF line endings and someone committed with core.autocrlf set. It may have been me.
Solution:
- For each branch
child
that was messed up but has a known good parent branchparent
,git checkout child && git rebase --exec 'git diff --name-only HEAD^ | xargs unix2dos -v' parent
- For each merge conflict, resolve them as follows:
git mergetool --tool=vimdiff
:bufdo %s/\r$// | set fileformat=dos | w
to fix all the line endings that are missing carriage returns:prev
and then:next
so it updates where the folded portions of the files are- resolve the merge conflict as you would normally do so
:w
and:qall
- For each branch

Not surprising; pretty much everything is illegal in North Korea, including breathing without the Great Leader's permission — granted by default, but subject to revocation without notice.

Status: uploading 50 gb of video using the web uploader seems to be a Bad Idea. I seem to have encountered a glitch where after maybe 3 GB of data transfer the whole tab goes nuts and eats CPU like no tomorrow. Luckily it's just the one thread (and not even the one doing the uploading!) so I'll just let it keep my laptop toasty overnight, but man, what a glitch!
Also, when did it get to be 2 am?

DEPRECATION NOTICE
This package uses an older NPM which is no longer offered as a standalone package separately from NodeJS. It is recommended that you uninstall this package and the package nodejs.commandline in favor of nodejs.install (which nodejs package now points to)Huh?
nodejs
should have you covered. Check twice, maybe it's not on PATH for some reason.Yes nodejs also installs npm, but I did not know that.
choco install npm

@ben_lubar Doesn't git have an option to auto-adjust line endings to your current system when you checkout?
Why would you bother with this rewrite? Looks complicated.

@cartman82 git has an option to make everything in the repo use LF and use your system's line endings in the working directory, which doesn't work very well when the 1k-commit repo is already nearly all CRLF line endings.
-
@dse said in The Official Status Thread:

I stopped using chocolatey. It was a nice idea, but it just didn't catch on with Windows crowd.

Ah, I see, I didn't know this.
And why would you need the second part of your workflow, with merge conflicts? What merge conflicts could there possibly be, when you're just adjusting line endings?
-
@cartman82 if you have one commit that breaks line endings and then another commit that touches the same part of the file, fixing the line endings in the first commit causes a merge conflict with the second.

web uploader
I just LOVE the move to eliminate desktop uploaders.
Desktop
Usually based on FTP or a socket connection. Direct connection using stable and well established protocols specifically designed to move large files in a fault-tolerant manner.Web
Start with a browser-- a nigh undocumented quasi-OS that already has limited access to the file system. Each one is different. None of them were designed with uploading large files in a fault-tolerant manner. There is no standards-- not amongst different browsers-- not amongst different versions of the same browser-- not amongst different OS of the same version of the same browser. Now add in JavaScript, a wonky, error-prone language that explicitly isn't supposed to have file system access, and was never designed for file transfers. It brings a second layer of "different on every browser/version/OS/phase of the moon". It can randomly crash with no recovery mechanism.
Put a layer of AJAX on top of that-- a nebulous set of whatever technology someone found on Stack Overflow and pasted into their "uploader". It also will behave differently everywhere, isn't based on any documented protocol, can't handle things like wifi dropping, has no fault recovery. But it will show an "uploading" spinner for the entire "infinity" while your computer melts the CPU.
So we now have an inner-inner-inner-inner platform trying (poorly) to do the job that a desktop uploader would have done like a TANK. Throw in huge gobs of reinvented wheel, UI cruft, and "no QA", and you get WEB UPLOADERS!

No no, it is, but because the icky web browser touched it it's automatically dirty because someone wanted the convenience of an "immersive experience".

Normally, the games from Humble are DRM-free direct downloads. My fault for not reading the
fine printgrey-on-grey-icons that apparently mean things.Maybe I'll try installing Steam into an isolated VM. Otherwise I'll just pirate the games I bought.

Technically I think you might be able to get away with SteamCMD, but that's a bit more convoluted than snapping up a temporary VM, installing Steam, sucking down the game files out of it, and then destroying the VM...
Edit: Yay but OP. Mobile wins!

Lol Probably not, sir.
But, seriously. Static Electricity is not so good for electronics. And the recorder is apparently especially susceptible to it. And for some reason, because HDMI passthrough, I didn't notice that there was ear-shattering noise until reviewing the files.

Yeah, literally found a PC headset off of a random box, plugged it into the Hauppage PVR Rocket's mimc jack, and that's the result.
If I ever do it again I'll probably do it in a different environment... and a real mic.
