Chess Patzers of WTF

Continuing the discussion from 🎒 TIL (about the Dark Arts of HTML):
TIL you can't actually escape check by castling. I've been playing chess on-and-off for like 15 years, and yet it never came up until today, and even then not during the actual play, but when I was keying the game in for analysis in Chessmaster.
Also, I need a chess clock. My girlfriend plays fine, but she's the slowest thinker ever.
How long are your games taking? The standard time control is 90 minutes per side or 3+ hours total.
-
Also, here's a clock for @Maciejasjmj:
-
Totally unrelated to chess except for the "clock", my brother has a chess clock, and the best use we ever found for it was to put time controls on our 2P games of Carcassone - we played 15 minutes per person, and it wasn't really binding, but it did wind up making your think more quickly about your plays, which kept the game moving and injected some "error" into the plays, making the games a little more interesting in end results
-
Why not one like this instead? It's about 100% cheaper.
-
Are those actually allowed in tournaments? I've been to a couple of tournaments and everyone was using physical clocks.
-

It's about that much, yeah. Which is fine for master-level games, but... for a casual game, really?
Also, here's a clock for @Maciejasjmj:
Yeah, I'm thinking of picking up one of those DGTs, mostly because there pretty much aren't any other electronic ones available here.

Rule of cool.

IIRC, you also can't castle if you'd be in check in the intermediate square
-
That is correct.
-
Probably not... since the first post was about playing with your girlfriend I kinda assumed it was not on a tournament :-P
I only played chess for about a year in middle school, and I hated it.
-

Taking the extra time is most likely helping her play well.
-
Are those actually allowed in tournaments?
no they are not, but they're legal in casual games.
-
-
5 minutes is all you need anyways.

Perhaps. But in my experience, having a time limit slightly stricter than the time you normally take mobilizes you to think on the opponent's clock, and because of that to plan further ahead.
Does wonders to your opponents' patience, too...

Anybody here frequent FICS?

Anybody here frequent FICS?
I considered FICS, but I already paid for a chess.com membership so I'll be there for a while.
-
seriously though, how does correspondence chess still exist?
There are some advantages:
- You can make moves on your own schedule.
- You don't have to devote an hour or more at a time to a game in order to have enough time to calculate variations to avoid blundering away pieces.
- It's legal to consult opening books.
-

If you need an hour of game time just not to blunder, boy do I have bad news for you...
Seriously though, I get that it has advantages, and I like the form, but with a ridiculously easy access to chess engines I fail to see how it's sustainable.

Most of the people playing correspondence on chess.com are beginners or intermediates. I haven't had any opponents who were obviously using engines, but I can see how that might be a problem at higher levels.

Sounds like quite a mate.

The bad jokes thread is :pun
-
As background, I started playing chess at age 7 and stopped playing after high school. I got into it again at the beginning of the year.
I recently entered two thematic online correspondence tournaments, one where everyone had to play the French Defense, and the other where everyone had to play the Caro-Kann. I won 3 of 4 games as Black playing the Caro-Kann, and 4 of 5 as Black playing the French. What was the common denominator? Both were openings I used to play in high school. What else did I play in high school? d4
So I'm switching to d4. Wish me luck.

Not only is it my pet opening, but I also want one as a pet
For those who don't play chess or are new here he's referring to the
hedgehog
opening.

On the other hand I found highly recommended books like "Think Like a grandmaster", "Logical chess move by move" and "My system" to be no use at all. If anything they hindered my progress. The first promotes a method of analysis that no strong player uses habitually, the second grossly oversimplifies the thinking behind the moves, and the third turns out to be not a system but a mishmash of ideas.
Quora has some pretty good chess advice, without as many people parrotting "practice tactics, don't study openings" as you would get on reddit.

OP plays the Sicilian in an over-the-board tournament without knowing what to do about the Anti-Sicilians, which is what most lower-level players play against the Sicilian, and wonders why he ran into trouble in the opening.

Whenever I see this topic, I read it as "Chess Patsies of WTF."

Play this one if you want to lose in 4 moves.

I'm not finding this quote anywhere but here….

Nobody ever misattributes quotes on the internet. - Albert Einstein

@asdf I didn't include Fischer's name.

onebox?
The quiz results seemed eerily similar to Briggs-Meyers, except with cool-sounding descriptions (e.g. Ninja, Assassin, Technician) instead of random-looking 4-letter combinations.
-
@antiquarian Apparently I'm a Prodigy.
Quite pleased with this one from last night; managed to wrong-foot White several times.
-
@flabdablet You're a poorly-conceived and terribly mismanaged clone of America Online circa 1989?
-
@ScholRLEA Sounds about right.

I've never had the patience for chess. My dad taught me the rules when I was a kid.
My daughter's school starts teaching chess in kindergarten. One of the reasons I chose it.
