Fuck the www part. And fuck browsers for trying to autoadd it.
What's horrific is in NZ, there are a bunch of websites that don't work without it. I don't know how that's possible, but it's true.I may have even seen one in the form

@remi Yes, but are they Nazi zombie dinosaurs? Because logic means nothing to a true Nazi!

Do you mean that Nazi science sneers at logic? (as well as boundary between life and death and many other things)

It's easy to have www.example.com resolve to something different than example.com. I see the "www." needed more often on university sites, and I think it's from the original/pedantic/less user-friendly/take your pick days of the Internet when the domain "example.com" would designate... well, a domain, conceptually, and isn't a name that's actually used, vs. "www.example.com" which would designate "the World Wide Web server in the example.com domain".
That's the sort of pedantry WTDWTF would appreciate, I think. (I like it quite a lot though I recognize the necessity of having the second-level domain name at least redirect to www.* if you're going to do it.)
-
@heterodox And there'd be stuff like "ftp" on the other subdomains.

Yes. "smtp.", etc. That's still often the case; it's just that domain names are almost always communicated in the context of the World Wide Web now, so in those cases the "www." was deemed redundant.

Yes, but it's bad practice.
Doesn't stop dumb people from doing it because they know jack shit about setting up and maintaining a website, though.

That's what default port numbers are for.

I think its meant to be 'general groups who people get angry at' - but there isn't a donkey or an elephant, so it's definitely weird.

We still have to setup domain.com and www.domain.com even though they're the same thing because those pesky users haven't had www beaten out of them yet.
Or possibly their corporatic overlords haven't had it beaten out of them yet.

Why not set up a helpful page?
"www.domain.com does not exist. This is probably due to the unnecessary
www

@sloosecannon because the corporatic overlords insist on it being seamless for their users.

No, it's site policy. And who actually types in the full URL for any site any more? (Well, except the people creating it, who can go max if they want.)

"www.domain.com does not exist. This is probably due to the unnecessary

Users will expect this, and failing to set it up is . Pick the one you want, but redirect the other to go to it.

Back when being able to deal with your insurance online and not talk to people was a bit of a selling point, I was insured with, I think, eSure. I needed to make a change to my policy so I went to esure.com, logged in OK, but couldn't get anywhere from any of the links. I think it was doing something weird like esure.com/home/www/esure.com/makeaclaim. I wasn't so savvy back then so all I could see was that the website was broken and I couldn't do what I needed to do. I was savvy enough to try it in a few different browsers.
IE and Firefox had this behaviour. Opera didn't, but only because it just wouldn't connect to esure.com and only worked if I included the www, at which point the whole site worked fine.
Not sure what they did to get that precise brand of fucked up, but I'd have preferred it to break early and not let me get logged in if nothing else was going to work
