Quake Live, WTF happened?
-
Quake live used to be Quake 3 but with a auto difficulty system e.g. if you ended up winning against loads of noobs it used to match you against players that were better until you started losing.
This was great. You ended up having really fair matches. I fired it up on Steam the other day and it had no auto matching system and loads of clan shite ... it is basically the same as CounterStrike 0.73 back in 1999.
Well done guys had a really cool classic shooter that you managed to ruin.
-
@lucas1 Pssst. We have a category for games
-
@lucas1 with very old games like that, the only players left tend to be the incredibly obsessive die hard fans.
Perhaps that's why it's now not as good as it used to be. I've noticed this with other games in the past, after a while, you're left with players who know the levels inside out and are very highly skilled.

@DoctorJones I think this is part of why I don't get into online games. I hardly ever buy things at release, so when I get round to it months or years later servers are either offline, dead or full of people who one shot you before you've worked out which button is crouch

You should try Alien Swarm. There are no official servers since launch. The crouch button is shift, by the way.

Good. Unreal FTW.
-
@ben_lubar I think I played through that with some friends a few years ago. It was OK
-
-
@ben_lubar I don't mind co-op as long as it's against NPCs not other people, and my team mates are people I already know and have decided to play with, not collected in a lobby

Why did you just say the same thing twice?

For me, it's usually one person I know (the author of the Reactive Drop mod) and then 6 random people from their friends list.
Turns out playing a 4-player Co-Op game with 8 players is fun mainly due to the amount of bullshit going on.

Do you not count 4v4 matches as co-op?

NvN = Team PvP
1vN = Asymmetrical PvP
1v1v1v1 = FFA PvP
NvAI = Co-op
1vAI = Solo

@pydsigner what about (1+N)v(1+N), like Natural Selection II?

That's just Team PvP meshed with head-to-head strategy.
Looks like a cool game though.

Yeah, it's like an RTS where the units are controlled by humans. It reminds me of Ender's Game.
-
@pydsigner I don't know the lingo since I don't play. Cooperating with people =co-op

My main concern would be the likelihood of frustration just amplified if you're playing as the commander versus an ordinary non-assymetrically roled game where if your team doesn't play well it's not going to be fun at all because you won't be able to accomplish anything without them.
-
@ben_lubar I personally would distribute the ones and treat it as NvN.
Surely you took gradeschool math.
-
@Maciejasjmj That is unreal tournament ... not Unreal. I want to see the actual single player game unreal make a come back, man that game still looks pretty cool today.

It did, and AFAIR it wasn't really good. Never played either though, Unreal's universe as I remember it is "there are people, kill them".

Please no fucking weapon loadouts or classes ... PLEASE!!

EDIT: Game play trailer .. damn this is QUAKE 3 gameplay with better graphics .. ace.
-
@Maciejasjmj Fair enough. I used to play a lot of UT 99 and 2004 but UT 99 never felt "right" whereas Quake 2 & 3 did (there are a lot of people that hated the Quake 2 multiplayer).

That's exactly what this game is. They said so at the conference. It's basically not quake. They wanted to compete with Overwatch.

After a few years of learning how to move correctly in quake games, I now like them for different things. Fighting my friends in the Morpheus map in UT99 was a huge amount of fun, and we did that until five years ago, and only stopped because I moved away. That sort of fight is hilarious and fun. Quake games tend to be more competitively balanced and faster paced, but lose out on the hilarity. Differently fun.

WHY, would you want this. I ain't smart enough to shoot and think at the same time.

I don't, and am quite glad to see that the gameplay looks solid.

That's the idea, though: you only have a couple weapons, so you do your one job and don't have to time every item spawn on the map in your head while aiming and strafing.
