Yes, it means that the websocket died (or something) so you need to do an action that will fail but reconnect it. Typically navigating to a different topic and coming back, posting, navigating to the top and back will fix it. Or refresh, of course.
Just tap on the timestamp link of the post you are trying to reply to. Easiest way to do it on a touch interface.

It is illegal to plow the snow on a public road unless you are a properly insured and bonded contractor who has been hired to do so.
But, we used to do it all the time. Just don't fuck anything up when you do so.

I get the impression from US TV, Reddit threads and the other places that my ideas of America are formed, that driving drunk is relatively common and not seen as all that bad in the US. Is that true or am I horribly misinformed? Personally, I won't drink more than a pint if I'm driving and even then I'll leave at least a couple of hours between having the drink and getting in the car.

No amount of cajoling or arguing will be as effective as him seeing customers go elsewhere because his company can't handle the load.

Seems that way. The Americans I know posted over here drink and drive. I got a bemused response once when I got excited that my driver turned out to have had 4 pints...
Maybe the police just don't care as much as they do in the UK.
Edit: Saying that, the French guests I've had didn't seem to care much either.

Hey interns! A word of advise. At your stage of life, slow but good ALWAYS beats fast but "I'll potentially waste someone else's time". It's not a classroom assignment.
Slow down. Think. Do it right. No one's counting on you to deliver before a deadline. You have the time now. Take it. You won't always have that luxury.

@Jaloopa It is relatively common. US cities have butt terrible public transportatiion options (which in many cases cease operating before bar closing time. Or in small cities, before happy hour.). Official taxi fares are frankly murderous at an easy 4-8x the price of a common bar tab, and outside New York City, wait times are atrocious.
And if you live in a small town or rural area, you literally don't have either of those options.
Walking? Modern city planning means all the bars are downtown and all the housing is 5-10 miles out.
Uber and Lyft, where available, have basically created a personal responsibility rennaisance - it is, for the first time, economically viable in many places to actually pay for a ride home.
-

It is seen as bad. I don't know how common it is exactly. From experience, if you drive here in a major city after 10 pm on a weekend night, you will invariably see at least one car obviously driving drunk. It's hard to quantify, though, because we only have stats on the people who either get caught or cause accidents.
-
@antiquarian There's also driving "drunk" and driving drunk.
The legal limit is set at a point where many people who drink regularly (not a lot - just regularly) aren't detectably impaired.
-
@Weng said in The Official Status Thread:

Yes, and I think we'd be better served to focus on the detectably impaired drivers first. I know a couple of people personally who were caught after they ran into parked cars.
Another anecdotal data point: I went to jury duty a few years ago. The judge was selecting jurors for a drunk driving trial. She had to call 12 people to get 6 who weren't arrested for drunk driving themselves.
-
@Weng said in The Official Status Thread:

Sure, they can't detect it. I doubt their reactions are the same as sober though.
It's possible that someone who's built up a tolerance is less dangerous slightly over the limit than, say, driving a couple of hours after they're normally asleep

Guess who just got a bill via email, over one month late, after settling the account? Yeah, me! Thanks, Cox!
-
@Jaloopa Rather distressingly, we don't really know. And if reactions are impaired, we don't know if that really matters. We don't do scientific, evidence based policy, particularly not on a topic this charged.

When I lived in Maine, it was not uncommon to see people with pickups that had plows on them drive with the blade down (or most of the way down) while it was snowing.

In our city one of the local wrecker services has a really interesting service. For $50, they will come tow your vehicle and drop it at your house and give you a ride home in the cab.

Like the disgraceful treatment of Professor David Nutt in the UK. It always makes me laugh when some government mouth-piece trots out the 'our policies are science-led' spiel.

Yep, most states are now at .08%. That is too low for almost anyone I know. You could have one beer with dinner and be over the limit, but not impaired at all.
