IOT bashing is already geting a bit old, but this one is a whole new level of wtf isn't it?
-
It's so they can adjust advertisements to your needs.
-
Oddly enough, I'd be fine with this if the answer were "academic research" or even "publishing funny articles on the internet about vibrator telemetry". Market research, on the other hand, can eat a bag of artificial dicks.
-
@Weng how many bags of artificial dicks would you say that you eat per week?
-
@boomzilla appx 0.25. there are these gummi lighthouses that look a lot like dicks.
-
@Weng Why settle for "look a lot like"? There are actual gummi dicks out there.
-
@Fox I can't impulse buy those at the convenience store.

Ok, so it's a company collecting anonymous information that they will hand over to a university for academic research...
now what?
-
@xaade Now we have people getting PhDs for studies into vibrator telemetry. Which is a world I want to live in.
-
@Weng Such a shame... *shakes head* someone should do something about that.
-
OK, but how much software is there that do NOT report to the internet in any way? The benefits to the manufacturer are huge and the cost to the user is zero if the data is properly anonymised.

Therein lies what is probably one of the biggest problems with this arrangement.

If you think that this is a thing that actually exists, please do some research on the subject of deanonymization.
-
@masonwheeler Oh, it does actually exist. Once the data's been aggregated. Before then, though... No, not really.
-
...oh... uh.... brb... I need to uh.... clear my cookies on my phone... for unrelated reasons....

I'll clean your cookies!
...
Um... well, if you, um... want?
-
@Tsaukpaetra I'd have to ask @cloak15 first.....
oh yeah.... I should clear his cookies too
-
@Fox It's an interesting problem, sending data in a way that it can't be easily snooped by anyone until it's been aggregated.
I feel like there has to be some kind of clever way to solve it, like some kind of P2P randomised network thing... where you send real data and fake data to everyone so that no one can tell which is which until it's been aggregated... somehow.
Or there's the non-clever way which is to make a third party host the servers. You already trust dozens of companies with data much more important than that.

I dunno, when and how I masturbate seems awfully personal.
-
I mean, i'd be one thing to ask, but just kinda collecting the info's a little creeps. I know there are a lot of people who grew up in a culture where sex is kinda this big 'do not talk about' thing, but as long as you don't ask for details I'm not comfortable sharing, it wouldn't bother me to answer.

You mean there are periods of time where you aren't masturbating?
-
@Fox said in This sex toy tells the manufacturer every time you use it:

Of course; but is it awfully impo
rtaent?
-
@Lathun Yeah, every once in a while. But no one knows when those periods are, so no one knows when they aren't, either, which means my house is more secure due to uncertainty about when I am and am not most vulnerable to attack.
-
@Fox Personal is not the same as important.
-
@Weng Things which are personal to you are generally important to you.
-
@Fox Eh, what are they going to do with that, blackmail you?
-
@anonymous234 Or join in.
-
@Erufael [irish accent]...I'm strangely okay with it.
-
@Fox Personal includes the dimensions of my junk, and how hard I have to strain to poo.
Neither of which are actually important to me.
-
@Weng What if I told you the dimensions of your junk are important to me?
-
@Fox Nothing, on account of there being no meaningful consequence should you find it.
-
So do they even have a reason why they are doing this?

: Ladies and gentlemen, we've spent years studying vibrator telemetry, and we've finally collated our findings. Our research seems to indicate that people enjoy getting off. Thanks for the thousands of dollars we were given to conduct this research, and for the secret webcam that was embedded in the devices.
-
@Fox Okay, there might be a meaningful lawsuit over use of my likeness in the event that you decide to mass produce chintzy plastic phalluses.
-
Cha-cha-cha!
Surf's up!
The tide is coming in!
-
@Weng Who said anything about mass production? Or plastic, for that matter?
-
Do you think Custome Vibe mode supports "Through the Fire and Flames?"
-
@Lathun Does it have multiple programmable vibration frequencies?
if not: potentially new idea: get a bunch of vibrators with different frequencies and make music out of them.
-
@Fox one off production I could literally not care less about.
And is that material actually safe for that purpose? If so, I just found an actual use for a 3d printer and it's dildos for Christmas across the board this year.
-
@Weng Honestly, I dunno, but I am considering investigating to find out if it is, since I'll be getting an OLO once they release it.

customized with names embossed into the base or something?
-
@Fox Something like that.
-
@Weng For extra "fun", make sure the wrong name is on each one.
-
Imagine that you're in an hotel with insecure wifi, and by activating this thing, even if all the data is encrypted, they'll know with what IP you're communicating.
-
@groo And this is in any way worse than insecure wifi in general?
-
@Weng At least when I connect in some place wifi I know what I'm transmitting. These guys didn't tell they this device would phone home, and this has potential to get some weird looks in the corridors. (I'm not sure what that thing is, I'm assuming it is for women, it looks like a headphone to me).
-
@groo so it's u-shaped. The bigger bit goes in the hoo-ha, the other bit rests externally on the little man. It has vibratory motors in both ends.
