@masonwheeler lightbulbs with network connection is our present.

We all want progress, but if you're on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive.

What an illuminating article.

Deja Vu

Thank @FrostCat for not including the word "lightbulb" in his post, making it not appear in my search results when I checked if I'm making duplicate thread or not.
Side-WTF - couldn't even bother to implement custom Google search correctly.

Everything about that company is shitty </Polish joke>

Actually I thought ben did that as a quick hack since built-in search was causing issues?
-
@LB_ my point still stands.
-
@Gąska @Frostcat's topic has an expectation of having another security fails, while in this one we should remain on the topic of stupid smart bulbs and not derail it into cat pictures at all.
-
@groo said in New vector of hacking attacks - lightbulbs...:
this one we should (...) not derail
-
@Gąska I said not derail into cat pictures, get in the program
-
@groo Yay! I get to use this one the same day that I found it!

@Gąska IoT shit isn't locked down at all.

Not locked down, but definitely fucked up.
English prepositions are odd. ;)

@Gąska IoT shit isn't locked down at all.
I hate when native English speakers use ungooglable phrases the meaning of which cannot be determined from context.
-
@Gąska suck it up.
-
@error I too have no idea why @lucas1 is talking about iot being locked down or not and what does it mean in this context
-
-
fun
If something is locked down, it is tightly secured. Something in a high alert state is said to be "on lock down." You might say, "I've got that shit on lock down," meaning you have a firm grasp on it.
-
@Gąska Let's take that one bit at a time:
IoT
Internet of Things. Fuckwitted stupidity like 'net-enabled lightbulbs.
shit
Appropriate description for anything IoT, but also refers to "stuff in general". Double meaning for double trickiness!
isn't
Standard meaning.
locked down
Security term (multi-word unit). Things that are locked down are properly secure. This might have originated in prison terminology.
at all
Standard meaning (multi-word unit).
-
@error When I see lock down in a movie it's something like when a building is in lock down and nobody can get in or out, sometimes with the lights switching to red and extra heavy metal doors covering the normal doors for extra security.

Yes, that's the right meaning. Now use that as a metaphor for digital security.
-
@Yamikuronue that would mean replacing the stupid smart bulb with an ordinary one, right?

Being able to shut off the kitchen light without getting up to do it was my christmas present to my parents last year.

Well, when the building is on such lock down in a movie, it usually means it's very, very insecure to be inside or outside it... Yep, good metaphor indeed.

A remote control? Fine. Involving the internet in it? Not a great idea. Involving the internet in each frigging lightbulb?!
-
@dkf well, my parents lose remotes all the time, too, so instead they use their phone. And technically it's the light switches, not the bulbs. And the only thing connected directly to the internet is the smart hub.
-
@Fox said in New vector of hacking attacks - lightbulbs...:

You wait until they lose their phones. ;)
Note that while these particular lightbulbs might be ordinary ones, there most certainly are some that are genuinely internet enabled. That's because there's been research into using light from such devices as a way to transmit wireless networking.
I'm not convinced at all that that's a good idea.

Yes!

Sounds like a perfect use case for bluetooth.

@Fox Clap On/Clap Off?
Long time ago, somewhere on internet I found a story where someone move to new house. He didn't take all their stuff yet, so had to connect his XBox to such clap-on extension cord. He was playing Call of Duty without headphones, and the cord recognized grenade explosions as clapping...
-
@Gąska hahahahahahahaha I find that pretty hilarious.

Also, if you're in the UK, several more switches at various places. Just in case.

And this year your Christmas present to them will be ripping that out when it gets hacked the lights flicker on and off all day long!
-
@FrostCat If I have to I'll just disconnect it from the internet until there's a patch. There are still manual switches on them.
-

And that is why no clapper for us. Too much shit on tv could register as a clap. Also i don't know of any clapper for wall switches, and I'm not about to rig one up to an outlet.

And endure years of yelling at you for making their lives harder?
-
@dkf said in New vector of hacking attacks - lightbulbs...:
This might have originated in prison terminology.
Quite so. Most people who end up locked down start off locked up.
-
@Gąska said in New vector of hacking attacks - lightbulbs...:

But the "harder" is insignificant compared to the ongoing misery of knowing that they brought @Fox into the world.
