The American Medical Association, and because you're statistically likely to need medical care at some point in your life.

Yes, it's early access and on Epic Games* but this game is excellent if you like the genre.
*the Epic exclusivity ends mid-March

@loopback0 Yeah, but installing the EGS client on my PC would not be satisfactory to me.

I don't understand...... what's wrong with Dan Shive and his wonderfully transformaramic Ccmic "El Goohish Shive"?
-
@Vixen More and more as time goes by. I used to love it, but stopped reading several years ago when it stopped being about weird magical adventures and turned into a big soap opera about everyone's dating lives.

@anonymous234 I played that game as a kid. I played the second one, Chamber of Secrets for PC, a whole lot more. I remember having a lot of trouble in the first one with the troll level, with the stupid camera facing behind you toward the troll as you run away from it toward the camera. Obviously with no way to see what's coming up ahead of you it was a case of memorize, new stuff, death, memorize, new stuff, death, etc. Very annoying. How did you handle it?

@Atazhaia While Coffee Stain Games didn't announce a date, they officially announced that iSatisfactory is coming to Steam Soonâ˘. The assumption is on or shortly after March 19, which should be the day their Epic exclusivity ends.
Edit: The Satisfactory Steam coming soon page went live since I looked for it yesterday.
-
@LB_ Probably because you were a kid. In fact that part is exactly one minute long and the entire game is about 4 hours.
It seemed like such a hard game as a kid but it's so easy now... except getting it to run properly.
-
@powerlord So, hm, Epic Games bought time-limited exclusivity for Satisfactory. And when the time limit runs out, the game still isn't finished, judging by the early access thing. I honestly don't know which is the biggest here. But poke me again when the game has been released for real and I may take a look at it.
-
- No
- No
- It's not on The Listâ˘. I'm sure it's a good game, but if I added every good game to The List⢠I'd need to play 30 hours a day just to keep up with new releases.

Seems fairly benign stuff compared to what Crash Bandicoot used to pull:
Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy - All Chase Levels – 21:25
— ProsafiaGamingThe chase from the video art starts at 9:56
And no, I never completed that one.
-
@anonymous234 I would advise adding it to the list, unless you're actually worried about wasting too much time since it's very replayable. I did a big post about it a few days ago
-
@JBert I've got the N Sane trilogy from a previous Humble Choice but haven't started it yet.

@Atazhaia said in Video game spotlight thread:

Yeah but what's there is pretty decent. They could just stop at the update that's currently in the Expermental build after fixing some bugs and it'd still be better than a lot of games released (not a high bar but still).
It seems that Coffee Stain actually give a shit, which makes a difference.

Meh. I'd rather watch Frungy. It's a much better game. It's the Sport of Kings! It's...well...I'm not quite sure what it is, but the Zoq-Fot-Pik sure like it.

Wolcen, Lords of Exil
-no waitWolcen: Path of Shadows
- agh not againWolcen
Wolcen is a good start for an interesting ARPG. The story is silly sometimes, and half the characters are space marines for no reason, but overall pretty enjoyable.
The gameplay isn't very impactful: damage spongy enemies that you fight large numbers of slightly slowly, and the sound design is nothing special, apart from the amazing voice acting.
Customization? Okay I'm a Path of Exile player, so I'll say I've seen better: this game explains poorly way too many details that have less impact than the large numbers would seem to imply. That said, I can't say I've seen anything else as deep enter the competition. There will be great opportunity to see many possible builds develop, because the itemization seems quite deep. The skills are like a massively overcharged version of Diablo 3's system, with some combinatory complexity - you get points to pick multiple runes. This means that the modifiers for skills can be very diverse, but in practice they mostly aren't. Stats in this game really do shine - they're really interesting, in that they don't do what just about any other game does, but ultimately one of these stats is vitality, so...
Some of the boss fights are incredible, but most are easy. The act bosses probably stomp most players flat.
Anyway, the game is cheap. It's a good time, with hard bosses and good replayability. A solid recommendation from me, if you're looking for something different with some meat on it. It's buggy and has some usability issues, but it's enjoyable.
Now, one last thing: I went to Exilecon. I played through the Path of Exile 2 demo twice. One of my friends was on the dev team for the first few years, so I'm already biased, but what I played there was beyond what this game will get you, and is free. It just won't be out this year. I'm not seeing anything even on the horizon that matches what I played: certainly the current Path of Exile game itself doesn't. But Wolcen is a good way to bide my time. By the time D4 comes out, it will probably have developed into something pretty competitive. But Path of Exile 2 still seems like it's on a different level.
-
@Magus Gee, that one has been in development for what - five years or more? Is CryEngine really that shit to work with? I appreciate not going for some modern cartoon art style, but it's not the big thing it looked to be back then.
I'm kind of disappointed they didn't keep the character customization. Making all the armor meshes scale correctly was apparently too much work, but things like that are what sets these games apart. Something others don't quite have.
I went high seas and got to level 5 staff-magic-splut-blam-kapow. Assigned points pretty much without caring for mechanics and still cleaned everything effortlessly, including the off-path insect boss. Beat a lot of Beta Screechers on the way, too. Then I got too much pants, so I returned to trader Mobo... mojito... mohenjodaro or what was his name to sell them and... well, could not be arsed to have another go. Is there at least some inventory upgrade down the road so I can haul more pants?
Anyway, I almost forgot these types of games are not for me. It's why I'm not playing Grim Dawn either. Making no other progress than selling lots of fantasy pants isn't what I'm looking for in an RPG (which it isn't - the whole ARPG is a horrible misnomer - but whatever).
Voice acting and writing seems to be decent. But given the type of the game I'm not sure why they bothered.
Soundtrack seems like your run of the mill fantasy pa-ram pa-ram pa-ram-BRAAAAHM, but - yep - turns out it's Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Must have cost a pretty penny. They've got a specific sort of sound, so perhaps I'll get that at least.
-
@Applied-Mediocrity One of the things that interests me is that my path of exile reflex to avoid picking up most items went away trying to play this game. I'm working on getting that back, because picking up white items really is worthless by act 2, and there are just too many. Path of exile pounds it into you much faster by limiting your portals and inventory more, making it a huge pain to constantly mule worthless items items, but this game's massive inventory and easy portal system make it seem too easy to just keep doing it.
As for difficulty, it ramps up very quickly: mid act 1 my friend started dying a lot (I didn't, because I put every point in toughness, which incidentally is great for maximizing damage), and the act boss is horrible if you don't have the defenses to deal with him.
-
@Magus said in Video game spotlight thread:

My real complaint is unrestrained respawn. I know, grinding stuff is what the entire genre is about. It just doesn't feel like progress when I mop up the place, as little as turn my head and lo - every evil bastard pops up anew as if none of said place mopping had happened.
As for difficulty, it ramps up very quickly
I see. Well, I was also juggling how far it's fair to play to "just check it out" while on high seas. It's happened that I complete entire game that way and then refuse to buy it, because I'd already completed it, what for
-
@Applied-Mediocrity enemies only respawn properly when you log out and back in - new enemies spawn as you go along, behind you frequently, but once you've killed them, they don't come back.
As for how long makes sense to try this game... That's a tough one. Act 1 is the longest of the three and has arguably the hardest of the three act bosses. I think act 2 was the best of them so far, but I need to start messing around with the endgame mechanics today.
Act 1 is a bit of a slog if you don't run past enemies and skip side dungeons, but if you do skip them, it'll be way too hard. I was mostly fine with this because all of my focus was on trying to understand the game mechanics, which are really complicated.

I started playing Duke Nukem Forever recently. Had it from some Humble Bundle (like the vast, vast majority of my games) and I thought I'd have to give it a try some time.
I was expecting a generic boring FPS. Turns out it's the opposite. It's more like an adventure-FPS. It has some shooting but also a lot of focus on interactive environments (at least the first part), and it's constantly giving you physics puzzles and new gameplay styles for no clear reason. It's a lot like HL2. But bad.
The level design is pretty bad. The shooting is kinda boring, there's little weapon variety. The Battlelord boss battle was one of the worst I've seen: literally one big pillar in the middle of the stage and you just have to run in circles to stay behind and avoid the projectiles until your health recharges.
But the writing and the jokes are good. That's the one aspect where it actually feels like a DN3D sequel. So that's something. I wish someone who doesn't suck at making games would buy the rights to the series and continue making games.

Your character will be customisable with different types of tattoos, war paint, and beards, though I have to imagine male Eivor is going to get the better selection of options in that third category.

@Applied-Mediocrity Women? In 9th century Scandinavia? What crazy idea will those game companies come up with next?

By Freyja's bulging tits, it's probably going to be the goddamn Preston Garvey hub
-
@Applied-Mediocrity Well, let's wait until they actually release the thing. After Origins and then Odyssey they earned a bit of goodwill.
-
@Rhywden Eh, it's Ubi. They won't stray from their big open world littered with icons thing. I did spend far more time than I'd like to admit picking up all the useless objectives like a fucking eejit, but that's because I liked the pretty fake Greek world itself (the eejit thing being a given - the game doesn't require any brain activity whatsoever). Combat was decent (if grindy past some point, level 30 or so), Sokrates was fun. Everything else ranged from meh to cringeworthy. In retrospect I fail to reconcile in my head or in writing why the heck I kept playing it for so long, and I hope I won't waste so much time again.

I haven't played this version, but assuming it's like the original then it should be highly recommended. I'm installing it now.

@Zecc What a coincidence! I was just about to recommend this entirely unrelated game. Which I guess would make it not a coincidence at all?
But let me tell you, it's way better than the trailer would suggest. No, really, the game soon starts introducing new gameplay elements and keeps you engaged to the end (although maybe it's still a bit shorter than I'd like). In fact it's so good you should probably just trust me on this one and buy it without reading anything else about it.

https://www.pcgamesn.com/the-invincible/release-date
Called Starward Industries, its first outing is a sci-fi game with atompunk aesthetics that is inspired by the works of StanisĹaw Lem, a prominent novelist who worked within the same genre. Itâs called The Invincible, and itâs set in a world where technology has advanced to the point of seamless space exploration, but equipment remains analogue as the digital revolution has not taken place, nor has The Cold War ended. The gameâs been in the works since 2018, and the devs hope to have it out next year.
Paging @Area_POL
https://store.steampowered.com/app/731040/The_Invincible/.
I haven't read The Invincible, but Solaris and His Master's Voice... well, let's just say they need a working brain to get through and I found mine a bit lacking. Rather hard sci-fi intermixed with scientific philosophy, bordering on pretentious. On the other hand, Ijon Tichy was far less serious. I'm mildly curious what they'll make of it. Think I might run to the town library for the 1970 translation just so I can pompously declare it's "not at all what the author wanted to say"
-
@Applied-Mediocrity I have read The Invincible, though it was a long time ago and I hadn't considered it worth going back to (it was one of the Lem books I chose not to take with me when I moved out of the familiy home). Frankly, I think that Lem's "pure" science fiction is generally his weaker work, even if it is a league above what was being written in the West at the time.
Interestingly enough, I do know what the author wanted to say with The Invincible, beacuse he tells us in Science Fiction and Futurology: it's that even when Man's powerful machines fail, Man himself is still capable of acting.
