@mott555 said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
So I guess you're supposed to conspire with another user (or use a sockpuppet?) to post a public post right after you post a whisper, to minimize the amount of time your whisper is the last reply.
I want to make a whisper, but don't want anyone to know I am whispering. Uh-oh, the whisper-target is the last post. I know.
HEY EVERYONE I AM MAKING THIS PUBLIC POST SO THAT I CAN SECRETLY WHISPER TO THE PREVIOUS POST AND NO ONE WILL KNOW I AM WHISPERINGYup.

It's classic Jeff, he turns it around to be the users fault that his team implemented a feature but couldn't be bothered to do it properly.
-
@blakeyrat But it loses context! Or are you suggesting we should "quote" people or "provide links to relevant content" like some kind of barbarians from late 1990s?

Oh, you're on mobile?
-
@boomzilla said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
You cannot resize a mobile website, it is already appropriately sized for mobile devices
Jeff knows best!
I have my mobile browser set to not let websites block zoom for just this reason. Sometimes you do need to make things bigger
-
@boomzilla Discourse has the Flarum scrollbar? Since when?!
-
@aliceif Holy shit! I didn't even notice it!
I wonder if there's a post where they claim it's revolutionary?
-
@aliceif it works about as well as you'd expect
-
@boomzilla
I bet Jeff hates the idea of running two apps side by side on one mobile device too
-
@Jaloopa And the creepy thing is still around.
-
@Jaloopa said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
Has anyone filed a bug report about that link not working (properly)?
-
@Onyx It seems to not work https://meta.discourse.org/t/official-single-sign-on-for-discourse/13045/1
Try dragging it around. Also, the elevator bar is gone and you can't goto post# anymore, it seems like.
-
@aliceif brillant

@aliceif said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):

No, wait...
Ah, there we go.
-
@Onyx said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):

They kinda admit they borrowed the idea.
esoTalk/Flarum is an obvious inspiration here.
-
@NedFodder I fucking hate right-gutter timelines.
- You get the "context" after reading the post (since English is left-to-right reading)
- You have to mentally align the timeline marks with the post, because FLAT EVERYTHING
- It just sits there like a poop stinking up the place, hanging out in the corner of your eye doing nothing but interfering with seeing the scrollbar.

@boomzilla Is there a corresponding minimum word length setting?

If you have a word too long, it won't break on whitespace. That might overflow a div and MAKE THE FORUM LOOK UGLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, that would suck.

And there is no better way to fix that problem then having a maximum word length.
I mean, it's not like computers could just insert space characters as-needed.

Eww, horizontal scrollbars. The only horizontal scrollbars should have are the ones the Discodevs accidentally introduced themselves through shitty, shitty css.

@boomzilla Ironically, he's right in that a well-written SPA app could potentially result in huge bandwidth savings over a traditional web app.
He forgot to correct for the huge incompetence factor, though.
-
@blakeyrat Yeah, it's the "minimal set of JSON" that's really hilarious.
-
@boomzilla said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
@blakeyrat Yeah, it's the "minimal set of JSON" that's really hilarious.
We send the minimal set of content so that you can see the content.
What would that minimal set consist of?
The entire database, base64 encoded, as a JSON string.
-
It's really too bad there's no way to deliver HTML directly to a web browser without having to process it client-side.
-
Nice relative times, GitHub. Reminds me of some other software I've used.
-
It is not sending whole web pages and assets over the wire, it is only requesting the minimal set of JSON data necessary to redraw the screen with JavaScript.
The only time Pissforce risks sending less data than doing a full page refresh, assets and all, is when it's sending "500 OK". And even that's doubtful.
Simple is good!
He's not looked at https://github.com/discourse/discourse recently (as in, "since the initial import"), has he?

As in "there's still data left on the server, so we clearly didn't send you all of it"?
That would explain quite a few things about disco

LOL. I was thinking, "Discourse is SPA so it always responds quickly."
But your thing probably explains a lot.

Somewhat more ontopic, I love how the Discodevs managed to even screw up this thing so badly. First of all, it's wonky (as pointed out before).
But then, there's this:
It says "4 replies", while I only count two:
- The first post is not a reply, it's the initial post. I don't think the word "Reply" is appropriate in this context. "Posts" would have been"
- The fourth post is not a reply either, It's a system notification about the topic being closed. That is definitely not a reply, and in my book it doesn't even count as a post. It shouldn't be counted altogether, but if you do want to count it the proper noun in the sidebar should be "Items".
And... I wonder how it deals with whispers. :D
-
@AlexMedia Even more that it seems to think that it will take you a day to read them. At least, that's what I assume the 1d at the bottom means...

@AlexMedia said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):

Posts vs replies has always been a discoursistent thing. OPs are special in discourse.
-
@Erufael that was bikeshedded from "now" to the time of the last post. It's meant to be a timeline.
Note also how for this they managed to put in the full year rather than 'yy. I wonder if they'll get round to doing this for posts instead of confusing anyone reading a post from 2012 or earlier
-
@Jaloopa ...That is even more unintuitive than I imagined...

No, I'm sure when someone notices this at fail.d they'll fix this informative widget to be as confusing as the rest of the site.
-
@Erufael said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):

No, it's predictive thread technology. The thread started in November and will continue for one more day before someone goes off topic. This will be enforced via thread closure to prevent topic drift.
