Instead of explaining what "Natural Hair" means to you, you just made it seem like it's a thing white people aren't allowed to do and white people deliberately intrude on. And that it is somehow "common knowledge".
I'm familiar with the general issue that especially black women have had regarding their hair, though obviously I wasn't familiar with the details. That's domain specific knowledge, and I read @Yamikuronue's disclaimers as trying to point that out to prevent the predictable shenanigans with language that go on around here.

@Khudzlin I'm a white male and I have super-curly hair which is basically a curse from hell. Sure, in the 70s I'd be in great shape, I'd fit right in with the Brady Bunch, but now every single ... everything! on men's hair assumes you start out with straight hair.
The only male pop culture figure with curly/super-wavy hair is that billionaire guy who becomes the Green Goblin in Spider-Man. And even THAT, they gave him straight hair in the movie versions.

@boomzilla Yeah but:
- That movie took place in the 80s or late 70s anyway
- He's obviously permed, not (necessarily) naturally curly
- Not really a much better role model than murderous super-villain
-
-
@blakeyrat If I put enough product in my hair to make it straight, I end up looking like this:
Except more obviously plastic-looking.
Which, again, that'd work great if I lived in the 1950s when everybody slicked-back their hair with about 4 tons of oil, but, alas, I live in this era.

Don't you have specialized hair salons and shops in Murica?
Actually, until my current barber, all of the barber shops I went to were voluntarily segregated. I did one time go into a barbershop with all black barbers and black customers, and asked one of the barbers, "Do you cut my kind of hair?" He chuckled and said, "I'll give it a shot." I had to touch up my hair (make some additional cuts) when I got home.

Are those people made out of chemicals?
Pendantically, yes.
-
To anyone wondering why @aliceif is mad:
I could easily claim that calling hairstyles that only one race can have natural therefore means calling the hair of anyone else unnatural, which undoubtedly is racist.
Just like defining 'natural hair' to include a mustache and beard would be sexist. We don't need more 'look how different and natural I am' words.
-
@Magus so my non curly hair would be unnatural in that definition? something is very weird on this last bit of sjwing
-
@fbmac Yeah, defining really generic words to mean one race specifically and getting offended that someone else doesn't approve of you doing that is seriously messed up.
-
@Magus I have a hard time believing this is what they're doing. I would interpret it as a hair that is left to it's natural curly state instead of being forced straight by artificial means.
As it's kind like pointless to say my non curly hair to be natural, It's ok for me if people expect them curly whenever thia word is used.

@Yamikuronue said in Hair care tips:
As a set term, it's African-American hair (so in the 4 range) that isn't permed, relaxed, or whatnot, just left free. For many years it was taboo to wear your hair natural, as white folks thought it was "unkempt" and "dirty" and "unprofessional", but the Natural Hair movement has been really picking up (you know you made it when Oprah does it)
That and the
@Yamikuronue said in Hair care tips:
"As a white guy I demand to use the term Natural Hair"
expected troll in the OP kind of say to me you're underestimating the crazy.
As usual, Yami wants us to all remember that she is not racist or sexist, and we all are and hate her for it.
-
@Magus calling black people african-american is wrong too, because there is a lot of white people in Africa and Black people everywhere
-
@fbmac also, there are probably black skinned people with noncurly hair because genetics don't care about these definitions
-
@fbmac Right, and all of that is more reason why this term is really stupid.
I'm certain there are wonderful sliding scales of every detail of hair. But hair is a really weird, varying thing. And the set of things that count as 'natural' is immense; cutting it down and giving it racial ownership somehow is freakish and moronic.

TIL wooly hair are something only black people can have. Got to let my friend know she's an abomination unto Lord and nature.
-
@blakeyrat if you had white fur you would be a rat lab, and people would do experiments on you, you're probably better being a black rat.
-
Natural is the opposite of artificial, so natural hair is hair not made by a human, such as dog hair or goat hair.

José, probably.
-
@ben_lubar I don't know if other countries use anything like this wtf-american suffixes. At least here we just say that a black guy is black.
-
@fbmac but then again, we rarely need to reference someone's race, and reasonable people don't give a damn to race here.
-
@fbmac only problem is that there is very few reasonable people, but them they're just called by some insulting racial slur
-

That's for women though, I'm asking for a male friend. Less styles and more product recommendations.
If you're putting product in it, is it still "natural"?

It's even more fun when the XYZ-American label is applied to someone who thinks he or she isn't that. For example, accusing a visiting Tanzanian of being an African-American will really offend them; they're not American at all.
When applying labels to someone, it really helps if you know what labels they apply to themselves…

Actually the video was pretty funny because she got about halfway through the word before realizing she was saying something dumb, and clearly just said "fuck it" in her head, and kept going.
