That's weird, the machine I'm on right now hasn't been restarted in 21 days, and it was only restarted then so I could install more RAM.
My windows machine at home hasn't been restarted in a couple months now.
My Windows server has been rocking strong without a restart for 8 months now.
You stupid-dumb-shit-moron, you are not applying updates !!!
Stop shooting aliens
Updates to my current machine are pushed by the system admin at my job, I don't get control over that.
My home machine gets its updates when I say it gets its updates. None of the updates that have come across the log in the last while have been pertinent enough to warrant my installing them.
Same goes for my server.

Sorry, just logged into my home computer, I did a restart 3 weeks ago I forgot about. And yeah it was for the most recent update on May 10th:

o.O
Are you a moron?
And I run a few distros... Linux Mint, Debian, and CentOS. Depending the the need for it. Linux Mint is my preferred "desktop" linux of the bunch, the others are for server applications.
My entire point with that post is that Windows updates aren't that frequent. Note the link I supplied, one update per month. That's no more frequent than I see for various linux distros, which often also demand a restart. (and a far cry from the mocking 3-minutes accalia commented)
Sometimes I won't update the server machines (windows or linux) for a longer time because I don't need the updates. They're not surf the web, open to the internet, machines. They're local work horse machines that are running stable... I will only update if the update is super critical to the operation of the software it runs.
I do also happen to deal with some other operating system as well that I could say are even more stable than linux... some not receiving an update in decades. Primarily because the OS hasn't been in active development for decades... lol.

I'm dealing with a couple dozen Linux servers at work Ubuntu, Debian and CentOS (Internet facing), my desktop at work, my laptop, desktop & servers at home, and the only time the update requires a reboot is when the kernel is updated.
You update your kernel that often ?

5 seconds on an idle machine doing literally nothing
Your computer is shit. Win, cmd, enter. Open in less than a second
This works instantly on my work PC on Windows 7, but takes fucking forever on my much-beefier (SSD, oct-core i7, 32GB RAM, GTX 980) gaming PC at home running Windows 10. I liked the Windows 10 preview build before they put in that Cortana bullshit. Workaround: use Win+R instead of just Win and it's instantaneous on both.
(Edit: forgot I upgraded the RAM)
-
@error I often hear this complaint, but haven't experienced it. Except once, before configuring Cortana, after which it was instant as usual.
It really weirds me out that people manage to have slow start menus on computers faster than mine...
-
@Magus The impression/assumption I always had was that it was "checking the Internet" first. Actually, when Win10 was still in beta, I couldn't use it at all when my wifi was disconnected (which led to that impression).

People often also mention things about this, but I usually press enter before it even renders whatever it finds, and even when it finds things, applications are what is selected.

You do understand that can demand and ALWAYS demand are 2 completely different things?
And if configured properly as servers, yes CentOS seldom wants to restart when updating most of the time.
But when running as desktop, yes, it often does. Even if NOT updating the kernel. Why... I no fucking clue, it just says it does, despite how everyone crows linux doesn't require one. OK, it doesn't require it, but damn it if desktop distros certainly WANT to...
And don't give me any "well configure it to not"... oh, sure, I do as a server. But in the same regard we're all bitching about windows behaviour that can be configured otherwise!

O yes, I figured it was hyperbole.
But at the same time, retarded hyperbole.
The long running concession of 'windows blows' is an old tired cum rag of a joke that I can't believe it's still a thing in 2016. And y'all rabid anti-windows guys seem not to get the ribbing back... oh, gotta rub it to the resident Microsoft fanboi.
Well I'm rubbing it back to the resident idiots who think their OS are oh so much more perfect.
Sorry, but I disagree with the heart of your joke... am I supposed to stand by silently or something? Why? What's the point? This forum appears to enjoy the multi-hudred to thousand post threads full of ranting and raving. Why am I supposed to be the one who keeps their mouth shut when people tell stupid jokes that are rooted in bias and misinformation?

Donate your outdated "junk" please?
I don't want to think of my “junk” as outdated.
But realistically, of the outdated parts I've got, the CPU is over 5 years old and the graphics card is about 3 years old. (The 90fps kit is in current use, so hands off. ;)) At least one of them has a fan bearing going; it sounds like drill at low speeds, despite going much quieter under load. You don't want that.
New components are a heck of a lot less troublesome. I use this site as a guide:
I'm mostly going at the Enthusiast/Extremist level, but my budget can stand it (I don't overclock systems; I prefer having lots of thermal overhead for various other reasons). Once I've decided what to get (or about that; I also check reviews), I shop around for a combination of price, availability and low-hassle.

Having also had a family member fall victim to this, I can confirm that you can set the scheduled date to one of the next five days that Microsoft ever so helpfully limit you to selecting.
So, you can have Windows 10 now or anytime in the next five days ... love that MS have given me such a wide ranging choice of dates so far into the future :(

You update your kernel that often ?Ubuntu releases kernel updates every 1-2 weeks. For 14.04 (the previous Long Term Support release), the last three kernel updates were on June 1, May 16, and May 9.
Mind you, every one of those were security updates.
-
@powerlord not long ago I had to do some cleanup because my /boot partition couldn't fit more kernels
-
@fbmac Why a separate /boot partition in 2016?
-
@flabdablet because LVM. Not sure if it was a good idea at that moment.
-
@fbmac GRUB2 handles booting off LVM just fine, even layered on top of LUKS on top of MD.
-
@flabdablet I had or thought I had some problem with it when I installed things
-
@fbmac Which distro?
-
@flabdablet last HD formatting was a few distros ago, I used just create a new partition for a new distro, and let the home partition undisturbed. Probably some version of mint
-
@TimeBandit to be fair, clicking on a "your update is scheduled" alert would logically just close the alert, not cancel the update.
