So not going to go to Ruby? Good…
Since it is @ben_lubar we're talking about here, I assumed he meant Go.

I'm not sure whether I should upvote because the joke was good or downvote because the idea is incredibly evil and only thinking about it made me physically sick.
Why not MUMPS?
Because I couldn't recall if it was compiled. Still don't know, actually.

Yeah but this forum's about moaning about software and finding annoying bugs...
Indeed, and I'd like to take this time to congratulate you on, and, of course, thank you for, your extreme cleverness in pointing it out. It's not like I'd noticed that, let alone mentioned it in a subsequent sentence.
@asdf said in Migrating the Forum to phpBB:
It's just that "normal" communities don't freak out when they find a bug and don't stress-test their forum software 24/7.
Like I said. Maybe a "I done founded a bug" thread or so every couple of months. That's not because they don't recognise bugs, it's rather that the software doesn't spend its time ramming its braindead fucking bugs and fuckawful design decisions in your fucking face every time you try and post.

I propose a motion to create a group with this name and put @julianlam in it!
The only reason being that we can have a badge next to his name, not actually restrict him, of course.

I seem to recall methods being stored in strings in the database, which would preclude them being compiled at any point prior to actually being executed.

What about Community Server?

You're being pretty generous with the term "works well" there...

Is slow and more than a little buggy. Also spams system notifications like crazy with very few controls on them.

What the fuck? NodeBB is a constant jelly potato on mobile. It can be managed a bit with turned off infiniscroll, but otherwise it's a piece of shit: it freezes a lot, meaning I can't up/downvote, reply and have to do hard reset to get it to work, back browser button doesn't really work as it should and it can take infinity to update counters. Plus, it happens to me a lot that I see i.e. 5 unread notifications and can only see like 2. I bet phpbb doesn't have these problems simply because they don't support this kinda functionality and that's great. I'd rather lose it than have to live with a half-assed implementation.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the effort of @ben_lubar and the NodeBB team, and most of all I do appreciate it that bugs get fixed, but it doesn't change the fact that mobile is fucking unsupported and it's a huge pain to use it. That's why I've posted less since the move: I post mostly from mobile and it's been so flunky I decided not to post at all.

Yes and no.
Discourse's composer didn't have the editing controls visible which meant you need to know Markdown (though they've added a toggle button now), although the text was smaller allowing you to see more of your post and it could even show a bit of the thread. On the other hand the quoting behavior was real potluck.
Simple browsing is where NodeBb wins IMHO. While it's just as susceptible to jellypotato thanks to the dynamic header and the browser counteracting any page shifting, at least the paged view puts bounds to the eternal bobbing up/down (Discourse would meanwhile jump from post 35 to 200 to 10). The only thing missing is a way to use paged view only on mobile.
Oh, and one last thing: Discourse had very small landing zones for some thread widgets, tapping e.g. open-partially-quoted-post, go-to-replied-to-post would be an exercise in frustration as they used tiny arrows with a bunch of them all next to each other.
-
@JBert well, quoting behavior was on par with NodeBB, and only thanks to @boomzilla, remember that though selective quoting was flunky it actually worked, while now it does not work at all on mobile, and full post quoting worked well, as it does now. Plus there was no jellypotato with infiniscroll.
It doesn't mean I long for the discourse days, god no. I'm glad we're on NodeBB instead. It's just, all this newness makes forum software hard to work with, because JavaScript is awful and webdev is hard and hipsters have taken over the industry.
I'm just saying that it might be that old school forum software would work better because there's less to get borked.
-

My selective quote from mobile begs to disagree

I'm afraid your memory is playing tricks on you, I've had jellypotato on Discourse on more than one occasion.
I'm glad I can at least use paging to put a stop to it.
I'm just saying that it might be that old school forum software would work better because there's less to get borked.
I think I would stop visiting this forum though, these newfangled forums at least offer ways to ignore topics / categories, and post read detection makes it so that you can read post by post rather than 20 at a time.
-
@JBert, I don't think my memory's playing tricks on me. I remember jellypotato when selective quoting and when the reply box was open but not otherwise. And maybe it was different on an droid, but there were no jellypotatos by in those situations or by default otherwise.
I'd like to reply to the rest of your ports but I can't -- I don't have it memorized by heart and NodeBB deemed it not important.
-
@JBert said in Migrating the Forum to phpBB:
post read detection
Which is a lot less useful in nodeBB than it was in Discourse ...
-
@JBert oh yeah, you're right, there are some great features like remembering your last read position (and unfortunately discourse did it better -- you could trust your lay read position, while you can't either NodeBB -- someone posted response to a topic will still take you to the last post, like anyone would like to go there. NO I WANT TK GO THENL LAST FUCKING UNREAD, NOT THE LADT FUCKING POST. ISN'T THAT LIKE LOGICAL AND FUCKING CLEAR?)

I used several Android devices on Discourse and they all jellypotatoed. The jellypotato varied by thread and circumstance (poor network seemed to always be a trigger) but it was definitely there, and it was probably worse on Discourse. At least in NodeBB, we don't really jellypotato unless there are images or videos or something in the posts...
-
@sloosecannon said in Migrating the Forum to phpBB:

NodeBB will sometimes go into Infinite Jellypotato™ mode on both my Android device and also, less frequently, on my computer, which means that it will continually jump up and down in a thread until I refresh the page. Never experienced that on Discourse. No idea what exactly causes this.
-
@asdf Sometimes nodebb also refuses to scroll upward - it just moves you back down when you reach a certain point.

@kt_ Yes. The youngest one (4.5) is currently refusing to answer in English so it leads to some strange conversations.

That must be why I'm so confused: My language doesn't use multiple negatives, but the dialect of the region I grew up in does.
