Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems
-
@DogsB Yah for me too.
Could we maybe do "releases" instead of "just constantly tinkering on the live site because fuck users"? Is that a crazy request to make?
-
Another one
the yellow bit has being like that for a while. The purple one is finally not overlapped by the top most bar.
-
-
@blakeyrat Main problem is that different users have different tastes.
So the tinkering is done so people start complaining.Filed Under: complaint driven development
-
-
@Kuro Maybe we could use this thing called, oh geez we have like 20 of them at work, OH YEAH, a "staging server".
-
@blakeyrat We tried the whole thing of a seperate forum for changes with @ben_lubars home server before this thing went live. The amount of your complaints should be a testiment for how well it worked out.
To be serious for a bit here. Just give it a few days for things to really settle in. People are still playing around a lot. It will be stable once the first wave is over, I would assume.
Filed Under: I make all my changes on stylish, though :P

Cookie timeout is too low. This is a comedy forum, not your banking website. I go one day without logging on on my work laptop, and its cookie is invalid and I have to log in again. Laaame.
I believe the generally-agreed-upon standard for websites of no importance is 2 weeks.
I asked Ben about it the other night and he said that it has been due to him rebuilding the Docker containers. I expect that when things settle down, it will cease to be an issue.
-
@ben_lubar is it possible on the onebox plug (iframely? or whatever) to have it not one-box links that aren't on their own line? Stangely, I actually thought that was a pretty nice thing Discourse did.
Now I get annoying paragraphs like:
You do realize Blah is open source, right?
Title Of Webpage No URL Visible
That ain't even remotely close to what I typed.
Also, did we move from a forum with no underline to another forum WITH NO UNDERLINE!? What did underline do to piss off all open source developers so badly?
Seriously. Defenders of Markdown: explain to me why there's no underline. Because I'm not even talking about confusing markup or weird behavior, I'm talking about a HUGE GLARING MISSING FEATURE GINORMOUS!
-
-
@ben_lubar Don't be a smartass.
-
@Kuro These changes should still be trialled on a test system first; that's software development 101
-
Home / recent only appear after clicking on there are new posts toaster.
FFS!
What is this retarded shit? A drop down beside buttons with the same option as only one button.
-
Hey people who aren't Blakeyrat: you can make your OWN threads to point out issues
-
-
-
Cursor hovering directly over the bell icon: not a link
Cursor hovering about 20 pixels below the bell icon (red dot), over nothing at all: somehow a link
EDIT: If you hover over the number 2 there, though, that is a link. Just the bell itself is not. The one thing you assume would be.

Who will he be emulating the next time he quits? ;)

I've gotten nailed twice by this one: what is the red + that stays around when you're editing a new post? Clicking it acts like the Discard button. Since it's red and kind of prominent I thought it meant submit so much so that I didn't even see the Submit button until I noticed none of my nodeBB posts have shown up.
-
-
@mikehurley
The Red Boob hides the composer
-
@Luhmann Ok, I see how that works. It toggles the editor and the posts flow into and out of that space, depending. Since the content adjusts to the available size, what's the point of it?
-
@mikehurley
Yes and to top it off: mobile where hiding the composer could help doesn't have a Red Boob of Hiding

So.. has anyone figured out why the "unread" thing only ever has some number between 91 - 99? I've never seen it show anything else.

It maxes out at 99. And we talk a lot.
-
All embedded YouTube videos have a title of "Loading..."

Mine currently says '4'. But then I did do 'Mark as Read > All' just after the migration to get rid of pretty much all the older stuff.

Ditto. It did creep up to 9* again at some point (where * is a seemingly random digit unrelated to me reading threads or new ones being posted to)
-
-
How do I find threads that I've created? Is there an easy way to do that? Sick of scrolling through 40 threads every day to find this one.
-
How come new threads and threads with unread posts are glommed together in one big annoying list? I want those two things split out, at least optionally. I frequently want to mark threads with unread posts as "read" while still looking at the list of new threads; AFAICT that's impossible in NodeBB.

@Jaloopa Is there a way for this dumb monkey to do it by pressing UI elements instead of telepathically knowing a URL?

As it is now, you can't even see how many unread posts you have in the thread before entering it. Small steps...

Your profile has a vertical ellipsis kinda button thingy - when you click it, there's a "Topics" option in the menu that appears.
-
@blakeyrat Go to your profile, click the three dots thing on the right and choose
topics
from the dropdown.Edit:
-
@Maciejasjmj Oh right. And to get to my profile, I click on my own name as if I wanted to send a chat/IM to myself, because this UI was designed by martians who have never seen a hu-mon computer before.
-
@blakeyrat said:

Or your avatar on a post, or the avatar in the top right and then your username. It's not the most discoverable but not too different to other forum software
-
@Jaloopa said:

No, that replaces it with a checkmark. Because why not? All rules of logic and common sense are already out the window.
-
@blakeyrat That would be the topic list. I reckon that particular bit of UI dumbheadedness is taken from Google Inbox where it also makes no sense
-
I can't click my notifications icon, because some weird pop-up (I guess that is showing who up-voted a post?) has the wrong z-order and is blocking it.
-
@RaceProUK also maddening is that the Notifications links never seem to take me to the actual location of the notification, I assume due to jellypotato-like issues with infiniscroll. I always have to hover the notification to find what the post # is so I can manually scroll to that post # myself.
TL;DR - infiniscroll sucks no matter who implements it.
-
@darkmatter said:

Specifically because it scrolls to the post before all the images and stuff load; as the images appear, they push everything down, but the infiniscroll doesn't compensate.
-
@RaceProUK huh... if only someone would invent some kind of... "onready" event or something that allows for code to run once the page load has completed so that it can get scrolled to the correct point after everything is done changing. That would be a swell concept for the interwebs.
-
@darkmatter
window.onload
is what you're looking for
-
@RaceProUK said:

Which is BULLSHIT because it means if your JS is loaded to the DOM after the "window.onload" event has occurred, you have no way of detecting or handling that situation.
IE's readyState was SUCH a better idea. Of course it's now extinct, because the W3C doesn't adopt good ideas, just really shitty ones.
-
The more I use nodeBB, the worse it gets. It struggles like hell with the notifications, constantly updating the # on the bell but never matching to the # that I see when I actually open the notifications list. Unless I leave the site entirely and come back, then it synchs up. Seems like they should either SYNC ALL THE NOTIFICATIONS INFO AT THE SAME TIME OR NEVER SYNC IT AT ALL.
At least it takes usage to make nodeBB suck.
Dicsourse all but leapt out of the browser to punch me in the face from the very moment I signed up for an account and hit the reply button for the first time.
-
If you're in mobile mode (which I am, because this forum is still broken and detects my gaming PC with 1000-pixel-wide window as a "mobile device"), and you hit Post (rather the right-facing arrow), and there's some kind of error:
- That error is never reported back to you
- But the right-facing arrow is greyed-out and there's no way to retry
- And since the editor is full-window, there's no way back to the forum (to see, for example, the status bar) without losing your post
-

It seems that it does save drafts, even though there's no indication of it. But yeah, if I have to
close the editorrefresh the page for any reason on mobile I copy the entire post into clipboard first, because I don't trust it. Not that I trusted Discourse either, but at least it had an indicator that would tell you it saved your draft every once in a while.
