Wanna chat?
-
@accalia ?
Is there a way to remove chats? They aren't exactly useful to me.
-
-
Ugh.
Chats <> PMs.
NodeBB fail.
-
@accalia nodebb thinks I want you, but I think @raceprouk might take issue with that.
-

yep.
i'm noit sure if i should issue PRs to fix chats or to make proper PMs.....

Depends what you want her for…
-
make proper PMs.
@accalia YES PLEASE.
Otherwise the Sekret PM Club is dead. I don't think we can conduct our activities like this.
-
I suppose likes are anonymous now?
-
@Matches nope, mouse over any nonzero post score.
-
New chat bug: If I open the chat via the chat icon in the top bar and read it, the small circle on the bottom right doesn't disappear. Super-annoying!
-
@PleegWat how does one mouse over on mobile? Tapping doesn't work
-
@Yamikuronue Why would we need "proper" PMs? How are they really that different from what we have now?
-
@Matches said:

On desktop you can...
-
@loopback0 Proper PMs allow you access to the full history; chats don't. Kinda important for roleplay ;)
-
@loopback0 well, apparently each of those chats is a different pm topic, so... Lots of pm titles = tons of side chats, and on mobile there are no topics, just user images and names. And not even all names, just first 3
-
@Matches said:

tap-and-hold-while-wiggling?
If you tap-and-hold, it thinks you want to select text, so wiggle your finger a bit so it doesn't, and then the browser should notice the mouse is "hovering" over that element and tooltip the popup show.
-
@Matches said:

On desktop either. You have to open the chat to see the topic.
-
@Tsaukpaetra I saw your likes while trying to hit that. Good system.
-
@Yamikuronue said:

okay. after sockbot i'll work on PMs
shouldn't be too hard....
-
I'm still not sure what a "real PM" is that a chat isn't?
Like... how it shows chats on mobile is missing some useful information, but other than that?
-
@loopback0 When I click to open chats, it's basically got a chatroom UX: no history, title massively decreased in prominence if it's shown at all, frequent streams of posts.
I want a thread-like UX with privacy settings.
-
@Yamikuronue said:
no history
You mean the little menu at the top?
@Yamikuronue said:

Yeah, not showing a title is annoying, but that's not a "real PM" that's "make chat less annoying".
@Yamikuronue said:
frequent streams of posts
How would that change if they were all "real PM"? Hint: it wouldn't. You'd get an entry per "thread" whether it's a chat "thread" or a PM "thread".
-
@loopback0 said:

What I mean is, history is not important. You can't see "all time", it's defaulted to only showing you the immediate history, and I haven't tested but I think there's a cap on how far back the widget goes.
-
@Yamikuronue How important is "show me longer than 3 months ago" in a typical PM or chat?
-
@loopback0 Look, if you can't see the UX difference I don't know what to tell you.
No in-reply-to, no reply to this post, no quoting, no history, only the eternal now, the constant stream of small messages with a poster attached. It's basically the difference between a forum and IRC in the first place.
-
@Yamikuronue said:

Words that explain it?

General post complaints, Shirley?

You didn't answer my last question.
@Yamikuronue said:

The exact same activity on Discourse would be a constant stream of posts?
You're not doing a good job of explaining the problems, but whatever. Ain't my software, I ain't defending it. I was just trying to understand someone else's complaint as to me a group chat and a group PM are largely the same thing.
-
Yabug - Each time you click a chat in "See all chats", you have to press back twice to go back to the previous chat.
-
@loopback0 said:

In a roleplay game that lasts for several months if not a year, where you need to be able to refer to the earliest posts? Very.
-
@RaceProUK I think the conclusion is "Chats are not private topics like discourse PMs were". We/you will have to find a different solution to that problem.

Right. Thank you for explaining it rather than getting in a grump. Especially when it relates to a specific use of PMs that I don't partake in. I see how that'd be annoying.
As a genuine question is there not something better suited for that purpose than a forum PM chain? Like maybe a topic which is only accessible to a limited group?
-

Well, we have @Mafia-Club-Ded, so I could make something similar for the secret PM club. @mods, is that OK?
-
That would work, but what about our existing roleplays? They've been turned into chats, and we'd want them in actual threads if we do this Sekret PM Club group thing.
-
@ben_lubar Sounds sensible. I think @PleegWat hit the nail on the head in that a PM in Dicksplines was just a topic with a limited audience, and that's an approach fairly unique to it.
edit: you'd need to move the existing one(s).
-
-
@RaceProUK I can do a mini-import if you remember the Discourse URL of the thread.
-
@accalia has a list somewhere I think
-
@RaceProUK i do, but i would want permission from everyone involved before i share for an import
-
@Yamikuronue @RaceProUK @accalia ok, status update: There's a subforum on the Games forum with the PM threads @accalia send me the IDs for converted to topics in it. I haven't looked at any of the posts.
@accalia has access to a group that can interact with the subforum, not visible to any user not in that group (including admins). She can add users to the group and optionally set them as co-owners, which allows them to modify the member list of the group.
-
@ben_lubar said:
not visible to any user
full stop as far as the groups page is concerned.... that will make it interesting....
threads look good though and they do show up in the forum....
-
@accalia if you're okay with the identities of the club members being revealed, I can make the group non-hidden.
-
@ben_lubar i don't think it's a secret who we are. ;-)especially since you named three of the five us explicitly in this thread.
-
@accalia is that a yes, then?
-
But what if I don't want people to know I'm in the Sekret PM Club? :P
-
@RaceProUK then y'all should stop mentioning it every chance you get

Do we need a "Texts from NodeBB" topic?

Absolutely!
BTW: I reported "my" chat bug:
-
I guess that while chats are OK for flagging a “fix it” issue, they really aren't anything like PMs which also worked well for other things.
So no, I don't really “wanna chat”.
All of this is aside from whether chats work on mobile. They work on desktop, and that will feel so utterly wrong for Club Ded.
-
@dkf said:

Or, well, chatting. As in, not very persistent discussions.
Also, why do I have to explicitly click "Reply" and not "quote" when I want to quote my selection?
Also also, I didn't mean to upvote that post, but it's really hard to hit the right buttons on mobile. So subtract one when measuring your e-peen.
-
So basically everything should be posts, right?

"Real" PMs seem to be Discourse
PMs, so yeah, just topics with a restricted audience.
