Where is Newcsatle?

Was that meant to be Newcstale Tupon Uyne, Egnland?
-
I suppose it could be Newcstale Udner Lyem; @PJH?
-
Where is Newcsatle?
It was built on top of Oldcastle, rather annoying the residents who were all forcibly relocated to Notacastle
-
It's marked on my calendar.
-
Was that meant to be Newcstale Tupon Uyne, Egnland?
Yup.
I suppose it could be Newcstale Udner Lyem; @PJH?
Nope.
-

It depends on how much you've been drinking. If you're from Newcastle, then the answer is usually a lot.
-
Looks like @PJH and myself have the dubious pleasure of having access an entire 3 minutes earlier than @boomzilla.
-
Just don't ruin it and get me re-banned before I can get back in.
-
Don't worry, I'm just going to clean my profile. I'm not happy that my site links and picture are on meta.derp with no way of removing them.
Sane forum software would allow you to change account settings (i.e. delete your account) even if you're banned.
I doubt much effort went into this feature though.

Given @abarker was once banned untila 10
, I'm inclined to agree

Sane forum software

Who was the person that got anonymised and banned?
I found it amusing that even the banning was Discoursistent.

Actually, you should threaten to sue. You are from the EU, so your content is yours and fuck Jeff. So yeah, you all definitely should threaten to sue.

Name me one forum system that does this, as none of them do to the best of my knowledge.

Exactly how many forums have you been banned from again...?
-
I am not aware of any forum software where banning does anything other than preventing the user from logging in.
-
Given that I used to develop forum software and at one point had a dozen different forum systems installed on my PC, and studied their code... Not exactly a fair comparison.
Also to answer Ben's point, all of them that do "hard banning" (as opposed to soft banning, a la XenForo's discourage feature), the ban prevents them logging in, which prevents them changing their profile... And the ban typically logs them out too, so no reusing existing login to request deletion.
Some systems differentiate the kinds of ban to "post ban" but these are not "bans" in the way the systems implement them.
-

I don't know of any that do, but I have a completely reasonable expectation of being in control of my data.
I've never been banned from a forum before, so I've never had this problem before, and I will probably never have it again.
-
None of the forum systems really get this right and usually end up either having some kind of contact form deal or the owner is in the US where this is less of an issue.
All the platforms are a bit behind how the world is moving. One of the few times I'll agree with Jeff that a change is needed.
-
All the platforms are a bit behind how the world is moving.
If only we had a forum that was forward thinking, you know, one for the next 10 years
-
Why would the banned user's profile still be visible? I mean, to anyone other than a mod.
That just means that you have to ban the spammy user and delete the spammy links out of their bio in their profile.
-
That wasn't the issue being debated, the profile is hidden from non mods on almost all the systems, but the issue was banned users requesting deletion of their content which could include PII.
I don't think any of the systems gets this right. But I guess I'll bow to your superior knowledge on unrelated topics.
-

Then what's the problem?
the issue was banned users requesting deletion of their content which could include PII
You mean like if their site was hacked?
Quite frankly, I wouldn't trust them to get every bit of your PII successfully deleted (including from their backups) if you weren't banned, and you asked them nicely, and the laws said that they had to do it upon request. And even if they did, someone could have crawled it and cached it while it was up.
The only safe way to make sure that they don't have any of your PII is to not give any of it out in the first place.
your superior knowledge
I'm just speculating.

Those are all very good points, but as the person who originally raised the point, I'm not bothered about my privacy. It's more the principle that bothers me.
I'm more bothered about my profile being on their shit site, with no way for me to remove it. Especially as my behaviour categorically didn't warrant a banning (Jeff knew that so he deleted the evidence). I don't want to be associated with their community in any way. Jeff showed us just how childish and petty he can be.
He falsely accused our community of being toxic on a number of occasions. The irony is, he's built a toxic community around himself where the only acceptable behaviour is to lick Jeff's boots and tell him what a genius he is.
It's funny, sad, and infuriating all at the same time.
While Jeff's at the helm, I don't think there's much hope for Discourse. I think that's a good thing.
-

Yeah, and I can totally sympathize with that. Like I said, my expectation would be that, on a sane forum platform, a banned/suspended user's profile would go away. is as usual. Also, this:
Actually, you should threaten to sue. You are from the EU, so your content is yours and fuck Jeff. So yeah, you all definitely should threaten to sue.
-

Unfortunately they seem to be doing reasonably well in spite of Jeff. There seem to be enough people who either don't know or don't care about the ways of JeffCo for it to survive.
-

I was saying that for years.
Meanwhile, half the people on this forum were working full-time giving him absolutely free QA labor.
-

Eh...that's probably what the contact email address is for. I doubt this is a big enough problem generally to worry about. Having watched the discoprocess, I'm sure if a paying customer asked for it, they'd allow it.
-
@boomzilla, Congrats on your "Gives Back" badge!
And you seem to be Appreciated and Respected

LOL. That's awesome. And I'm listed right next to !

Appreciated, Respected, and Banned

Discoppreciated.

I counted 3 anons.
Respected
1 anon
Based on last seen dates, all of those anons appear to be from here. There are also quite a few WTDWTF posters on those lists.
-
But remember, on Meta.Derp, the only Word that matters is the Word of Jeff, for Jeff is the Prophet of the CotCDCK, and His Word is law.
-
LOL. That's awesome. And I'm listed right next to !
I'm surprised at how few people have the "Gives back" and "Respected" badges.
In getting rid of so many of the productive members of his community, Jeff has demonstrated how childish he is. It just goes to show that he's willing to cut off his own nose to spite his face.
He never deserved our help in the first place. I was outraged when the banning happened, but now I'm thankful.
-
I think most people go there when they have a specific support question or something and ultimately don't spend a lot of time there. We also had a culture of TDWTFers liking all of each other's posts.
Plus they get rid of old stuff regularly for the reason that it's old and out of date.
-

I was then able to re-register with the same username.
You should have re-registered with your username with an _ at the end. Because if Discourse can't handle notifications for usernames with a _ at the end, just imagine how buggy their banning system must be for the same.
That just means that you have to ban the spammy user and delete the spammy links out of their bio in their profile.
[Bios Not Available until further notice. The spammers have won.]
I was saying that for years.
I was saying it before you, you bandwagon hopper.
(I called that from day one.)
Day Negative Three Hundred over here, n00b.
-
(I called that from day one.)
Yes, I remember. At least we've now all seen Jeff's true colors. It'll be nice observing the Discourse WTFs from afar in future.
-
I just hope the Discourse WTFs get put on the homepage, front and center, once we're no longer reliant on it. And it gets shared to Hacker News and Slashdot and BoingBoing and all those other places douche-y Californians hang out and read their tech news. And then his investors and customers lose faith and pull the plug.
But I know none of that will happen, because there is no God.
-
BoingBoing
They're one of the flagship Discourse installs, actually: https://bbs.boingboing.net/

They're one of the flagship Discourse installs, actually:
Which makes it even more important to reach them and tear them out of Jeff's clutches, doesn't it?
