And your condescending posts here also don't say how to do it.
Maybe, you little shit, it's because I'm a bit too busy at work to download and install the game right now, and I don't have the exact commands memorized, which might be why I said "you can read a tutorial".
Now, again: do you want to know, or are you just being an asshole? If you actually want to know, I am willing to write up some short instructions, for either DF or Gnomoria, your choice. Even though you're an abusive asshole.

Furnaces are under [b]uild -> furnac[e]. Yes really. No I don't know why.

Because f was already taken by cabinets!

Silly me. Why are boxes h? They can also be called bags or coffers, but why h?
I also appreciate b->w->forge and build->workshop->[v]ery forge . Very forges run off magma, which is what makes them Very.

magma
I haven't actually gotten to magma in any of my fortresses, so I've never seen the v option.
But I have seen the option for cages, which is j, and the option for chains, which is v.

Had a go on DF last night. I reckon I need to RTFM
-
@Boner there are some good 3 hour tutorials on YouTube; after a couple episodes you can probably start the game.
-
@Magus hmm 3 hours you say. If it's Blakey doing them then it's a deal!

I assume this is a way of putting people off the game, while also being perfectly true
-
Actually, that's a pretty intelligent game.

Amxu Oslostâsost wasn't happy with farm life in Mubeamxu, so he went to Inupiethela to become a wolf puncher.
7 years later, he found a wolf which he named Lafoipiro. He punched Lafoipiro in the face.
The next year, Amxu found Lafoipiro again and punched him in the face again.
The year after that, Amxu found a much larger wolf that he named Eneica. He punched Eneica, who later died of old age.
In 48, Amxu's father Smunstu Spuspodostngosp was murdered by a poet named Utes Kastaurar.
Amxu was so angry about this that he waited one year and then punched Lafoipiro so hard that Lafoipiro died.
Amxu searched for months, finally finding another gigantic wolf who he named Oñustlecit and punched. Oñustlecit also died of old age.
In 52, Amxu was ambushed by the giant polar bear that would come to be known as Tislamâbir. As Amxu was a wolf puncher and not a polar bear puncher, he had no idea what to do and died.
EPILOGUE
Four years later, Amxu's mother Snodub ûrerukge was killed by a bard named ûsbu Snuststosbûb, who was killed by a bard named Dostngosp Smunstusmespu, who was killed by a bard named Snamoz Atuöx. The end.

@ben_lubar Have you translated dwarf fortress to lojban yet?
-
@PleegWat that would pretty much require rewriting the code. It generates text by stitching together strings, so simply rewriting the strings in the executable wouldn't work for places where sentence structure varied.
-
@ben_lubar This is generated by the game?
It seems very focused on tracking how everyone dies, even if its much later, "of old age" and completely unrelated to the story.
-
@Adynathos it's generated by my code based on the data structures documented in df-structures/history

Note to self: avoid dorf bards.
-
@abarker They were goblin bards, so no problem with dorfs.
-
@ben_lubar How was I supposed to know that? The summary didn't say!

@ben_lubar From that thread, "DO NOT MINE THE BLUE METAL UNLESS YOU ARE PREPARED FOR INSTANT FUN"
?
-
@FrostCat He's being hyperbolic.
It's a blue rock from deep underground that's mad fiddly to work with. Needs to be carefully refined into threads and then melted down, but it's very strong, very sharp, and very light. Also worth approximately infinitybux, so.
-
@AyGeePlus I'm pretty sure he was referring to the CLOWNS that mining the COTTON CANDY releases.

How is cutting down a tree "combat"? Is there anything in this shitty game that's not buggy and broken?
It's combat because the dwarf was injured. I think the combat log system would be a good example of something not buggy and broken.

@ben_lubar Spoilers! Why would you tell a new player about the cough circus cough. It's one of the best parts of learning dwarf fortress.

Dwarf Fortress getting graphics and a goddamn tutorial.

It's been delightful watching the graphical version of Dwarf Fortress inch its way towards release

TBF, the community-provided Lazy Noob Pack has been around since I don't know when - giving you not just graphics, but a whole slew of tileset choices. The DF wiki also has a slew of tutorials for pretty much all aspects of the game, so it's not like this stuff wasn't available already.
Also, oddly enough, I now find most tile-sets to be less legible than the ASCII graphics, but that's just brain damage.
-
@GOG I haven’t touched DF since, well, about the time this topic started, out of morbid curiosity. Hence the “In other news” style reposting because I don’t know any better
(You expect me to play DF? )
-
@Arantor No, Mr Bond. I expect you to die.
-
@GOG this never happened to the other fella.
-
@Arantor But it did cause severe brain damage.
-
@HardwareGeek can the 20 minutes or so I played of DF, years ago, still lead to brain damage? Inquiring minds need, nay demand, to know.
-
@Arantor Ah, so that's what happened to you.
-
@HardwareGeek I was already doing PHP before I came here. And we’ll, I was here, before trying DF, so logically this place gave me brain damage since I never touched it outside of seeing it be talked about here.
-

The tilesets have to look like things, where ASCII doesn't. A wood table and a wood chair both have legs, but one of them has a back, so there are maybe five pixels different between them. But ╤ is better distinguished from ╥ because both of the main lines are different. And a barrel ÷ looks different from a rock •.
-
I see no Dorf here.
-
@HardwareGeek said in Dorf dorf dorf dorf dorf little person dorf dorf:
i'm more interested in these lines
Dwarf 1 punches Dwarf 2 in the throat with her left hand and the injured part explodes into gore!
A major artery has been opened by the attack!
Dwarf 2 grabs Dwarf 1 by the right ear with his right lower arm! What sort of anatomy allows a dwarf to grab an ear with a forearm?
Dwarven.

@PotatoEngineer I vaguely remember an article that explained that they weren't actually using ASCII but drawing images of letters instead of just outputting letters, something to do with going fullscreen on some hardware or something.

They broke teletype compatibility?! But yes, this is how screens do work.
