π₯ Declawing cats

People who would declaw a cat are scum.
Yep, even more when you can get one set of this for US$5
-
I always just trimmed the claws regularly when I had cats.

And if you don't want to do that, a decent scratching post will do the same job, and the cat will do the work for you

I just taught the cat not to scratch indoors. And then I left home and my parents spoiled her and now she knows she can get away with anything.

Tell us how you feel about people who would snip out the cat's sex organs.

Not always. Cats scratch their claws to a length they find managable -- still long enough to be annoyingly painful when they try to cuddle. I trim them to a length I find acceptable, blunting them a bit in the process.

Both are people who stopped too soon.

Cats that are spayed or neutered eat less and are generally healthier.
Cats that are missing the first knuckle of each finger have problems going to the bathroom and will use teeth instead of claws to defend themselves.
Being bitten is much more painful than being scratched.

Yes, I'm aware that is what declawing is.
have problems going to the bathroom
Only if they pick up bad habits while they're healing.
use teeth instead of claws to defend themselves
Indoor cats don't need to defend themselves.
Being bitten is much more painful than being scratched.
Either your cat has a behavioral issue or you need to quit yanking on its tail.
I'm in favor of both spaying/neutering and front declawing, FWIW.

Let's put it this way: I'd be comfortable never having children. I wouldn't be comfortable not having 25% of my hands.

And it's not even as though you walk on your fingers.

You'd be comfortable having your sex organs removed without your informed consent?

I type too much to be comfortable not having 25% of my hands.
Cats suck at typing, though...

But they do walk on their toes. You kind of need toes to do that.

You're an asshole. I hope some giant cat adopts you and cuts off all your finger tips.

I haven't heard of any lions or tigers adopting people. I'll take my chances.
-
But they do walk on their toes. You kind of need toes to do that.
That certainly would explain why the two front-declawed cats who share my living space with me have taken to walking upright on their two hind legs.
-
Do you walk on your hands if your foot hurts? No, your foot hurts if your foot hurts.
-
It would also explain why the footprints left by cats consist of nothing but their toes.
-
How about this: You cut off 25% of each of your feet and then walk around for a while and tell us if it's weird.
-
Why did you adopt a pet just to mutilate it? What a great person you are. Just like St. Francis of Assisi, and how he would feed all the wild animals and then cut off their noses with a razor blade and tear the birds' wings off.
-

I should tell that to mine. Mostly the "eat less" part.
-
It would also explain why the footprints left by cats consist of nothing but their toes.
They do. Learn anatomy.Yes, I know declawing doesn't remove all of the surface the cat normally walks on, but it's a much larger proportion of the 'foot' than the anatomically equivalent bone in a human.

They do. Learn anatomy.Let's see.
Before declawing, a cat's footprint looks like this:
That large pad in the center? It's not a toe. It's the cat's palm. QED.
After declawing, a cat's footprint looks like this:
Surprise, there are still toes. Granted, they're missing the last joint, but they still suffice for the purpose. And after they've healed there should be no pain walking on them.
-
Learn anatomy. I would add 'before you start hacking bits off it' but it's too late for that. And don't selectively quote me and pretend to contradict me on something I addressed in the other half of my post.
-
I did not selectively quote you. Here, I'll quote the part that I left out:
I know declawing doesn't remove all of the surface the cat normally walks on, but it's a much larger proportion of the 'foot' than the anatomically equivalent bone in a human.
Before declawing, a cat's footprint looks like this:
After declawing, a cat's footprint looks like this:
Oh wait, I already said that. Never mind.
Anyway, if it was up to me, I wouldn't have them at all. And they were front declawed already before they invaded my space, so they stay front declawed. I'm just arguing against the idiots who say it's a cruel, inhumane practice. They're not little humans. They're animals. We keep them for our entertainment.
-

Those aren't cats. They are furries.
-
-
Misogynist!
-
Male furries can't have claws? Sexist!
-
Before declawing, a cat's footprint looks like this:
After declawing, a cat's footprint looks like this:
Actually, that first one is missing the imprints from the claws.
-
Dogs leave claw marks in their footprints. Cats normally have them retracted.

It's relevant information in response to your comment. We're not the only two people reading this, and some of them might not have known it immediately.
-

I don't like that, either. I understand the need for it.
Personally, I let Blakeycat have a litter of kittens first, and they all went to good homes. Now she's fixed.
-
Oh, sure, give her a chance to know what she'll be missing out on before you take it away.
-
I didn't take it away. She had a litter, she got to raise them, she was a good mom. 3 happy, healthy, kids is good enough.
I even kept one for her to have forever, but sadly he ran away as male cats sometimes do. I hope he's living with a nice family somewhere.
-
I didn't take it away.
I believe 'it' was having sex and kittens again in the future.
-
Yeah, the one child policy, plus forced sterilization. But no, you didn't take anything away...
-
Oh. In that case, better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.
-
What about adopting already declawed cats? Does that make you scum?
-
Don't address that to me, I was only interpreting.
-
I'm pretty sure he knew what I meant.
-
He either didn't in which case I settled the misunderstanding, or was pretending not to in which case I spoiled his attempt to troll you. You're welcome.
-
I never had to clip the claws. I just gave Linux (the cat we rescued in that cold Korean winter) something to scratch and it was fine.
I wouldn't want to declaw a cat. Poor kitties.
-
What about adopting already declawed cats? Does that make you scum?
Yes. But the declawed bit is just incidental.
