A new computer with UEFI, and an SSD
Got any donors you're willing to let go?
I don't think the BIOS in these IBM T42 laptops is upgradable, and I heavily doubt that anyone makes SSDs with an IDE interface...zoomed way the fuck in

10 is so fast I don't even have time to enter the BIOS on some of my workstations anymore. It's actually really annoying.

have time to enter the BIOS
I got a rubber ducky that specifically spams DEL, F2, and F10 for three seconds. Works, mostly, so long as the UEFI doesn't keep the keyboard initialized between cold boots. For that situation, I manually turn off the PS.

Status: Spent all day looking for a memory leak. Valgrind found a couple in various online configuration reload functions, but the affeccted system hasn't had any configuration changes in the problem interval. At the same time, deconfigured a part of the configuration in the affected system I've been suspicious off for a while already, system doesn't seem to significantly leak memory anymore.
I wish I had a dump this reproduced off, instead of only a live monitoring env.

For a sitcom--that's a low bar, of course--that wasn't actually a horrible show. Nobody's gonna mistake it for a good show, but it had a few laughs.

we'll prove that the halting problem is solvable as long as you write your code in XCode.
Is that because everything written in XCode halts?

Just waited 10 minutes after logging into my newly updated Windows 10 machine before my desktop or mouse cursor appeared.

Holy s**? It in-place upgraded you? What madness is this?!!?!
Probably "the first major Windows 10 update" madness.

Yes, that's why there's a way from Settings to say "reboot into the bios".
-
"the first major Windows 10 update"
Ah. Gone are the days of the Service Pack, eh?
Glad I'm not a part of that. LTSB apparently doesn't get any of that for years.Yes, that's why there's a way from Settings to say "reboot into the bios".
Assuming Windows is in a bootable (and in a can-get-to-Settings) state.
Most of the time you want to get into the BIOS this isn't necessarily true.

Also still not as cool as shawarma spin.

Then how fast it boots is irrelevant.
I'm not sure how Windows 10's boot speed makes any difference to how fast the BIOS does its stuff though. The BIOS takes just as long on both my Windows 10 machines as it did before, so I've still got the same chance to press the F-key.

Ah. Gone are the days of the Service Pack, eh?
Beats me. Maybe so, since "they're done with versions". About says Windows 10 Pro version 1511, build 10586.3.

In my experience the usual Del or F2 or whatever will work because the boot loader isn't jumping right into Windows.

my experienc
Your experience is frickin' awesome then. My experience is: Push power button, mash the appropriate key immediately (if you delayed more than 250 ms, you done delayed too long), and hope that "Operating System Not Found" doesn't come up in half a second.

The best part is that I opened it in Firefox, got the Unresponsive Script popup, and problem solved. :)

I'm trying to get a job, but the person handling the application hasn't replied to my answers to their questions yet. I wonder if they read this forum.

Did you change you machine with a shiny new 10?
I do not want to shatter your fanboy world but BIOS is before OS takes over. If it is fast perhaps someone has disabled memory check and you have bought yourself a fast new machine. Now to take full advantage of that machine you should install Fedora, or all that money goes to waste [1].

Same machine, it's an HP Z420 workstation from a few years ago. And while I have to deal with several Linuxes at work, Fedora is not one of them.

Status: I have electricity.
By way of explanation, we had a storm with high winds yesterday. According to one account I heard, between the two entities that provide electricity to this area, 350000 people (or households, I'm not sure which) were without power last night. Last time I checked SNOPUD's recorded info this afternoon, about 55000 of their people/households were still without. I was without for about 24 hours.
-

Probably , but it actually is. If you're stuck in a bootloop or something you need BIOS/UEFI access to fix, the lack of a "mash F*" pause can be quite annoying
Also using F8 for safe mode isn't possible

I've found that disconnecting all drives usually gives you enough pause while it tries to find them that you can enter BIOS on machines that zip through that stage. And then hopefully the BIOS has a 'Power-on Boot Delay' or similar setting so you don't have to go pulling cables in the future.

Status:
I thought I found a bad port or Cat6 run in our new office because my laptop would only connect at 100 Mbps, not Gigabit, indicating there may be an issue with the pairs Gigabit uses but 10/100 does not. We replaced some cabling and jacks, and I still could only connect at 100 Mbps.
So I looked up on Dell's website, and my Alienware m11x R2 from around 2011 does not have Gigabit Ethernet, only 10/100.
-
Mine was out for about 2 hours. I went to a mexican restaurant. Had a nice deluxe enchilada. It was good. Then I drank some Dos Equis. Then when I went home, the power came back on right as I was unlocking the door.
Anyway point is: sucks to be you.
-
Also helpful is getting a PS/2 keyboard. For raisins, I've seen UEFI setups that don't enumerate for USB keyboards until after the quickboot window has passed. PS/2 is always alive.
At this point, I just configure my desktops to do full POSTs. They dont get powered down enough for seconds to matter. As long as it takes less time to boot than it takes me to use the toilet, were golden.
Laptops generally have the built in keyboard wired into PS/2.

It is surprising just how many computers and peripherals you can buy today that are still 10/100. I have 2 Dell laptops that are roughly that vintage that are also 10/100 and just yesterday I was at Fry's and went to pick up a network adapter for my MacBook Air and the one I picked up was 10/100. I had to order a Gigabit one off of Amazon. They did not even stock a Gigabit adapter for it.
-

Under the circumstances, I don't disagree. However, I think there are probably people that were hit even harder — the guy who was killed when the tree branch hit his car, if nobody else.
-
It's a travesty that 10/100's are even manufactured anymore.
-
It was inevitable.
-

Yeah, but they have one thing going for them...the parts are super cheap.
And, realistically it does not matter for most people. Ultrabooks and MacBook Airs are huge sellers and they don't even have ethernet ports built-in. Most people use wifi. It only matters for nerds like us, and businesses.

Status: Lately I have been watching a lot of "Wheeler Dealers" (a British show). If those guys actually did this for a living, and not just to make a show about it, they would be homeless and starving in no time. They never make enough money to make all of the shit they do even remotely worth it.
-
Yeah. Like they do it for the love of cars... either way, that show sucks. Counting cars or Fast & Loud are way better.
-
Yeah. Like they do it for the love of cars...
Agreed.
either way, that show sucks.
Meh, perhaps to you. For me, I watch it because I get to see cars, and in particular their mechanical systems and the way they work, that I have not been exposed to on this side of the pond. It is not great, but it is watchable.
-
that are still 10/100
IKR? My half-decade-old POS laptops apparently came with Gigabit standard, but Maybe it's because it was supposedly business equipment?
Status: Stupid .Net ODBC drivers that are assumed installed on "every" computer are quite obviously not, and the pre-startup crash that occurs in the app doesn't mention this at all (just "Generic dependency error" (translated) meaning "Something's missing we don't know what").
Apparently, the easiest solution to determine the actual cause of the error is to make a wrapper that doesn't instantiate the troubled object, then manually instantiate it later post init, which will (hopefully) invoke the JIT error box describing the issue!TL;DR: Missing drivers is apparently still a thing.

Yeah. My computer only reboots when we're installing updates (several minutes), or automatically overnight. So I don't really care either
-
My computer likes to reboot when I'm not using it, and then about ten minutes after I start using it it'll put up a message that says "by the way, we installed some updates" and then I click on the message and instead of telling me which updates it installed, it says "there are no new updates".
-
My computer likes to reboot when I'm not using it
That's because Bill Gates[1] knows about you and your predilection for Chrome OS and Go and stuff, Ben.
[1] or current bugaboo
-
Hey, if my computer wants to reboot when I'm not using it and "when I'm not using it" doesn't refer to "when I am playing a video game on it", it can go right ahead.

In spite of the quoted text I was replying to stuff later in your post.
