I am fucking fed up with this fucking job. Since I walked out the fucking door on fucking Friday I have not had a fucking 4 hour period (yes, even in the fucking middle of the god fucking damned night) go by where some fucking idiot hasn't blown up the on-call phone for a fucking fake fucking emergency. Generally right as I get in the fucking car to go do something fucking important (none of which has gotten fucking done because I'm obligated to turn the fuck around and go home to tend to these fucking fake emergencies), or sit down for a fucking meal.
They are going to compensate me for this entire fucking weekend or I am fucking walking.

@dicksores: how the fuck is this post "too similar to what you recently posted"? SIMILARITY, MUTHAFUCKA, DO YOU UNDERSTAND IT?
I wonder if this feature has ever actually worked. I would guess that, at best, it's an anti-spam feature.
MODS, do we have any stats on:
- Users who got this warning on a message, and then the message that they posted was substantially different from the triggering message (as opposed to just appending "fuck discourse" to the end of it)?
- Users who got this warning on a message, and then never posted the message?
-
It actually does work, for certain definitions. The problem is that Discourse often fucks up and tries to post a message twice when you press
backspaceReply once, and then berates you for that.
-
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? I AM BEING CALLED BECAUSE SOME FUCKING THING DIDN'T FUCKING WORK BECAUSE THERE'S A FUCKING POWER OUTAGE IN THE MIDDLE OF FUCKING NOWHERE? SORRY GUYS IT JUST DOESN'T FUCKING WORK WITHOUT FUCKING ELECTRICITY
fuck YOU DISCHORSE I'M GOING GO ALLCAPS AND YOU'RE GOING TO FUCKING LIKE IT.
-
I'd tell you to run, but haven't we been doing that since you've joined the forums?

Please call one of these two numbers:
1-800-{phone number for local power utility}
or
1-800-GO-FUCK-YOURSELF-YOU-FUCKING-IDIOT-MORON (local toll charges may apply)

Also: when searching for your next job, make sure there is a "no after hours or weekends support" clause. Check the job posting. Ask in the interview. Get it in writing in your contract.

The problem is that Discourse often fucks up and tries to post a message twice
So there's a Discourse feature that only works by accident because of a Discourse bug-- and it blames the user for it.
Discourse in a nutshell.

To be fair to the useless cunts who opened the tickets, they're in Florida. The power outage is in fucking Kentucky in a tertiary datacenter. There's no way they would have known.
Why is there a dependency on Middle of Fucking Nowhere Fifteenth String servers for a business critical process when we have a redundant pair of tier 1 enterprise DC's with redundant power, redundant generators, redundant UPSes? Because whoever fucking designed this fucking process was a fucking moron.
As a result, we are going to have a VERY large company who considers this to be the most business critical thing in the entire universe be very irritated with us. (Thread forthcoming in the Lounge to rant about this aspect)

Take some advice from this guy:

Third Rock was so-so, but the episodes where he berated his moron physics students were the best.

Dude. You should scroll up and look at some advice I gave you about... 2 months ago I believe?

Charr are kind of like the Klingons, in that you're constantly thinking, "how do they ever become an effective fighting force if they just spend all their time fighting each other?" Like, who in the Klingon Empire is building all those spaceships? Are they constantly shanking their bosses?
Plus the whole concept of a "war band" doesn't really work, if you want your nation to have an effective fighting force, as anybody who's studied the 100 Years' War or played Mount & Blade Warband (think of it from the perspective of the king of one of the kingdoms) knows.

I'm not sure what you mean. There are quite a few more types of schools in Germany besides the usual suspects.
In this case, it's a combination of trading school and economic college.
TR would rather be some pupils expecting to get by at our school without math.

Status: this is the good kind of Western Washington weekend where it rains so much that in only 3 days you start wondering if dryness is merely a myth told to placate children.
EDIT: where my recycle bin has about an inch of water in the bottom DESPITE ITS WATERTIGHT LID BEING CLOSED ALL WEEKEND! It's raining so hard, even the laws of physics are getting soggy!

A warband is basically a squad. Also, of the 4 high legions, only flame is bad. Every other legion agrees that women are people and that burning down houses of civilians in your own cities is a bad idea.
The ranks in the Charr military are basically:
- Khan-Ur (there isn't one right now, and there hasn't been one for hundreds of years)
- Imperator (commands a legion, there are four of these)
- Tribune (the guy wearing gray armor in the second video is one of these)
- Centurion
- Legionnaire (I become this after I kill the guy who was this in the second video)
- Soldier

Ah, here in the US, grades 9 through 12 are the same type of school, so having significant disparity between 10th graders is rare - most kids went to that school in grade 9, and got the prerequisite courses and, more importantly, the required lessons for the classes in 10th grade.

They used to value science but their republicans social caste won, and now honor is in acting like tough guys with no brain

The difference between 9 and 10 in Germany are more like the difference between 8 and 9 in the States. At least from what I can recall and Wikipedia.

Essentially live video broadcast of a conference. It wouldn't be too bad, except we're also expected to pipe the video feed (after live transformation, which includes things like a chroma-keyed overlay) into other rooms in the building. Our current setup uses an analog Composite video signal that gets converted to VHF frequencies (Channel 6 on a TV), and the equipment is being very finicky, not to mention the low resolution, and people that are used to watching content in 1080p HD are getting whiny. "Why can't we do the HD thing like everyone else?!" they ask.
Well, it's because we don't have $$$$ in the budget to buy a $5000 studio equipment rig....
-
Ah. Screw getting a camera with an IP stack. Just get something that'll output HDMI or whatever and a capture box to a laptop that'll do the streaming. Way cheaper.
-
Way cheaper.
Way cheaper, but with an unacceptable delay to the video stream. The audio system is piped through the building, and it will be minimum 400ms sooner than any cheap HDMI camera+capture card combo. I demoed such a setup and they were foaming at the mouth when they noticed the lips of the speaker did not match what they heard.... .
Not only that, but I'm not entirely sure I can stretch HDMI 200 feet to the farthest endpoint....
-
You're going to see a similar delay on any and all digital systems. You need to pipe audio through the same system. Not optional.
-

I know. I'm trying to convince the higher ups that if I get them to turn off the building audio for the extra rooms and do it that way we'd all be better off. I'm making a little headway, since for all but one of the rooms they're using a TV so the only reason they're using building audio is because its... um... higher?
On the other one that's not using the full signal I think I can jig it to take the audio locally, but the the main hall I can't do that...
Regardless, I'm working my magic to convince them what's what...

Ben, you need more productive hobbies.
Breeding obscure reptiles would be more productive than what you do now.
Well, as long as you aren't trying to breed with them of course.

My NodeBB docker instance was using 200% CPU and a lot of network, so I killed it. Not sure if those are related.
-
I take it that such instance is in the same droplet with discourse. if so, it may be related. this looks like a case for science
-
It's not in a droplet. It's on a Core 2 Duo machine I have in my basement.

I don't know why, but this is literally the best thing I've read all day. I think I'll cap my Internetting off with this. 'Night, y'all!

Lorne reads this tomorrow: If it was on a droplet, I wouldn't have to ask @PJH to test my code for me.

You're going to see a similar delay on any and all digital systems.
Even with professional-grade live video production equipment costing many thousands of dollars, you'll have a minimum of two frames of video delay, three if not everything is genlocked (synchronized to a master clock). That's a lot less than 400ms (66 β 120ms, depending on video frame rate and 2 or 3 frames), but still noticeable if compared to undelayed audio or direct vision.
@Weng said:You need to pipe audio through the same system. Not optional.
This.
-
you'll have a minimum of two frames of video delay,
I get that between my 1080p and 4k monitors on the exact same GPU.
I assume the 4k is doing some kind of filtering or some such I haven't been able to turn off. You only really notice when dragging stuff between them.

Status: I wanted to make the discomace in GW2, but let me tell you a story about why I can't.
For reasons that are still unclear to me, I need to kill a really big shark and take its tooth:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/d/d7/Giant_Shark_Tooth.png
However, there's only one shark that qualifies as big enough. And in order to do that, I need to get it to spawn, and even then I can't kill it by myself because it's a group event.
So how do I get it to spawn? Well, I need to fail an event that can be completed by one player and then fail another event that can be completed by one player, and if either of the events succeeds, I'm out of luck until the next cycle, which is usually around an hour later.
Well, it's late at night. Let's go check on that first event to see if I can convince people to not do it.
Here's how I found the event:
There was one other guy standing there on a ledge above the water. He hadn't killed a single krait. In fact, I hadn't seen a single krait anywhere near a quaggan.
Here's a screenshot of what I accomplished by trying to lure krait into the city.
The krait refuse to enter the city (most of which is behind me) and are content to stand near the entrance to the city, waiting for... something? I guess?
Anyway, here's what the Discomace looks like.
And that's after spending a few thousand gold upgrading it. Here's what it looks like before you add three items that I haven't even farmed enough stuff for one of yet.
But no, you don't get that one by completing the task list with the shark tooth in it. Let's try again.
That's actually what the precursor used to look like before Heart of Thorns. Okay, for real this time. Here's what the tier 1 discomace looks like:
... and now you know why I posted this here.

Yes:

(Chrome 46, ChromeOS Daisy)Here's a question with an answer closer to what I wanted: Does anyone see exactly five characters, all distinct?
