Too many things!
-
So I haven't been to this forum for a while. After returning I was greeted with the following message showing above the topics list:
Warning: you have too many tracked new and unread topics, clear some using "Dismiss New" or "Dismiss Posts"
I have the following questions:
- How many is too many?
- What is the implication of this? Is my keyboard going to physically assault me any second?
- Where can I find "Dismiss New" and/or "Dismiss Posts"?
- Why doesn't the message itself answer point #3?
- Why doesn't the message simply include a button to dismiss this stuff making points #3 and #4 redundant?
-
The message is going away in the next beta.
- 500
- The unread+new numbers will always sum to 500
- At the bottom of /new and /unread
- That's a good question. Also the buttons moved on accident
- That's a good question. In the next beta, the system pushes that button for you every 15 minutes to keep you under 80% of 500 instead of nagging you.
-

Wait, the server forgets which posts I'm subscribed to? And that's a "feature"?
-
Wait, the server forgets which posts I'm subscribed to? And that's a "feature"?
Well, you clearly aren't looking at them if they're still sitting there.
-
I'm working through it. Also, according to Jeff, none of the users of this forum exist because apparently the "feature" of disabling functionality "only affects like 50 people across all discourse installations".
Either that or this is literally the only installation of Discourse.
-
Actually no
The notice showed up for literally everybody at Hello Foros because they get more than 500 new topics a day.
-
For unread it just dismisses the posts, not the topics, right?
-
OK, I think I broke it...
-
What was the difference, again?
And bloody hell, how do you fuck up this sort of basic functionality. ComicRocket doesn't forget where I was in the comic if I track a lot of them. Netflix doesn't forget which episode I was on if I track too many of them. My fucking Kindle doesn't forget my place in the book if I track too many of them.
And explaining it as "well you obviously won't read those posts anyway" is a middle finger to the user.
-
What was the difference, again?
Dismissing the topic stops it being tracked. Dismissing the posts stops them showing as unread in the topic list/counter but the topic is still tracked so new posts after that point still show as unread.
-
-
Oh wow.
That's... kinda what I thought actually, but those option names are still pure shit. Why would you use the same word on two buttons next to each other to mean two totally different things?
-
I must be new here, but what is the reason for the Kuro-bar in the first place?
Why is it a bad thing to track this many topics? And why is it not sufficient with the current "sliding window" of considering a topic new only for a specific period of time?
I am guessing you are enforcing this rule for a technical reason (e.g. capping database usage), but given the amount of discussion it has created (on this forum at least), shirley there must be a beter way?
-
All of the above, plus: Stuff like this should be dependant on duration not quantity.
Heck! 500 Posts + Topics can be created on a
badgood day around here, subject to the quality of (and the reason for) what gets posted. If the 500 Posts + Topics is the result of an arbitrary decision made during the requirements capture, then it is a in itself.
If the 500 Posts + Topics is the result of some limitation in resource because somebody failed to make adequate provision for it in the design phase, then its is a double
If the 500 Posts + Topics is going to remain, well..... a more emphatic emoji will need to be created.
Addendum: before anybody even starts thinking about "tracking". As all posts / topics can be tracked, failure to assume all will be is:
That's 24 (and arbitrary number or a seriously fucked up answer to everything) serial s squared!
Remorseful Edit: my eyes.....
Is it just me, or can I see heart shapes in there? Is this..... love?
-
I complained that my numbers in "New" and "Unread" didn't add up.
Intermediate solution was the Kuro-bar to tell users to either dismiss their stuff or deal with it
Since nobody ever listens to a bar, it will now be automated. If we don't want automatic dismissing, we can probably ask PJH to just set "topicmaxnewandunread" or whatever to a million and all is well again.
It's also a bad thing because of the same reason toasters exist if you post too much in a topic / visit a topic thats too old / do anything. Discourse is supposed to be used to do short bursts of discussions. Thats - afaict - Jeffs vision and he sticks with it.
As stated before there is no known cooties or anything associated with tracking too much stuff. So not sure if there really is a technical reason.
They also think of removing the option "everything is automatically tracked and stays that way forever" from the settings... go figure

I sincerely hope that I misunderstood this. If not...you have to be fist fucking me?
-
hy would you use the same word on two buttons next to each other to mean two totally different things?
Because Jeff and his dislike for software that's easy to understand without taking a fucking course on it. A course that needs resitting every release.
-
You have not misunderstood.
-
Holy sheep shit.
-
This calls for some serious gamification. How quickly do we have to create new topics to keep people constantly over 500 new?
-
I must be new here, but what is the reason for the Kuro-bar in the first place?
Why is it a bad thing to track this many topics?
Because the server sends a load of information about the Unread/New topics down to the client - so it was capped to avoid sending way too much information down, rather than simply sending less down like y'know just the fucking total.
The limit of 500 existed a while - it never showed more than 500 across Unread/New.
-
If we don't want automatic dismissing, we can probably ask PJH to just set "topicmaxnewandunread" or whatever to a million and all is well again.
Until the next time we get cooties and it's blamed on that. Remember this is Discourse, and it provides the features but you're not supposed to actually use them.
-
In that case it would make much more sense to have the buttons say "Recent New" and "Recent Unread", and if I am on a reading spree I will read the 500 recent news and unreads and then work my way down the list, 500 at a time.
-
In that case it would make much more sense...
You're not thinking in Discosense.
-
Even in Discosense, this is a new tidemark.
-
So now you wanna start bike-shedding about the names of the tabs? On TDWTF?
Filed Under: Take that stuff over to meta.d
-
Right. Sorry, I wasn't thinking straight.
Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa, etc.
-
-
a more emphatic emoji will need to be created.
I created a piece of emoji art for that at some point but I've no clue where it went and can't be bothered to discosearch.

Well, there are a couple of bot frameworks lying around. What are new topics rate-limited to?

The awesomeness of that image is in inverse proportion to the awesomeness of the “500 is too much” concept.
-

It's beginning to sound like discourse is something akin to a 2 tonne fully blinged up pimpmobile with a 10hp engine (to allow for more real estate for bling) that blames it's lack of peformance (power to weight) on the quality of its tyres.
-
No, I think we already switched to a more powerful server once before.
Filed Under: I don't think there is a real life analogy to Discourse handling things...

I would have went with "Discourse is a $1500 car with $15K wheels. The owner thinks it looks cool, but a wheel could fall off anytime you hit a pothole."
-
I think we just switched to a different server, don't think it was more powerful.
-
a wheel could fall off anytime you hit a pothole.
Or just driving, but then it's your fault for actually starting the engine and driving it.

Still better than a Subaru BRAT, according to Atwood.

before we switched it didn't have Discourse on it. How could it not have been more powerful?

Ohhhh, you wanted to drive on the freeway? Well, you're going to need an upgrade for that.

Defroster? Who needs a defroster? I live in LA, my windows don't frost up.

ITYM driving at freeway speeds is not supported because our other customers don't drive at freeway speeds.
-
Our other customers don't drive at freeway speeds.
Yeah, well, Jeff...your other customers are hipsters and vintage Schwinn bikes aren't allowed on the motorway. They can't keep up. Especially so when the cyclist is laden down with 7 vintage cameras.

I don't think there is a real life analogy to Discourse handling things..
I don't know, try this:
I also found these, wot i av added here for fun
-
to avoid sending way too much information down
Why not send the total numbers, plus the first X IDs, with the option to request more? That's the way everyone has solved this problem from time immemorial. It had a fancy name, too, something about like, pages, or maybe cupbearers, and countries....

Because Discourse. Fuck knows, you're asking the wrong person ;)

Here's some recent stats porn:
-
Gotta love how there's nearly 40k more New Users than User Visits.
I can figure out reasons why, but it's still amusingly weird.
-
Yeah, lots of old CS users. Especially spammers.
-
How do I mark all the member threads of a category as Read? I can ignore them, but that's Not The Same Thing; I don't want to ignore new messages in the category, and so when I unignore things they eventually come back (which I Do Not Want).
