Google's new logo PꚙPS on mobile
-
On our small hand-held devices, this bold, multi-primary-colored capital G stands out far more effectively than the previous lower-case, politely curvy g. Lower case and monochromatic was subtle and endearing; upper case and striped is a pronouncement of “Bam! You’ve Found Google!” which can’t be ignored, even on the go. Like Google’s decision in April of this year to include mobile-friendliness as part of their ranking signal for websites, they are holding themselves to a new mobile standard. In the spirit of the new school year, this move passes with flying colors.
Such a bold move from Google has surely got to be of concern to Apple, who should perhaps consider reworking their own "subtle and endearing" logo to make it stand out more in the brave new world of 2015. Something like this, perhaps:

Hanzo'd that for you.
Also: unlike the idiot marketroid who wrote the lead piece, Sarah Larson apparently has a clue.

The new logo retains the rainbow of colors but sheds the grownup
curlicues: it now evokes children’s refrigerator magnets, McDonald’s
French fries, Comic Sans.OH SNAP!
-
Why the fuck does anybody rebrand themselves, ever? People hate it when companies do that.

As seen on worsethanfailure.com ...

In my experience, it's usually because a new marketing guy wants to leave his mark. Marketing guys are a bit like feral cats in that regard.

The real WTF is still the forum software.Nice to see some things don't change.

Exactly, while I don't like the new Google logo (oh, a upper case letter in a circle, how original), what bothers me even more is that they just flattened their logo like 2 years ago. And how many times have they redesigned Android already?
It seems pretty obvious to me that the "flat vs realism" thing is just a pendulum that swings from one side to the other, so we'll start going back to realistic soon and the brand redesigns will go on forever.
Wikipedia is useful as always:

I used to joke that it was to keep their designers occupied, but it might actually be the cause. I mean, you have a designer employed and pay him a big salary to design logos, what happens when you're not releasing new products? He probably starts redesigning old ones and pushing the boss to switch to them (because that means fame and $$$$$$)

I think my favorites are the 2008 and 2009 ones. I despise this whole "flattening" nonsense. It looked ugly in Windows 3.1, it looks ugly now. Worse, it looks lazy. It is probably the one thing I will always hate about Windows 10. 7 looks mature and refined and professional, 10 looks like a twelve year old did all the graphic design in paint and just couldn't be assed to try harder
-
Windows 10 is a weird combination of flat (the Modern Apps), not flat (the "legacy" applications - open Windows Media Player to see what I mean) and WTF please tell me this is a joke (the icons).
Windows Vista was the worst one IMO, with the extreme reflections everywhere to give it a glassy appearance (a good example of the other side of the pendulum).
-
IMO, XP was always the absolute worst. It looked puffed up and diseased, like it was having an allergic reaction to something. And the color scheme was absolutely stupid
-
Keeping that analogy going, then, Windows ME was clearly coming down with something nasty.
-
It is not known to the internet, but I was actually working on a Windows Ti (for Ti 83+ calculators). UI Elements are extremely similar, despite the screen resolution being magnitudes smaller than the minimum requirements....
-
I'd forgotten about ME.
The only time I've bought the new version of Windows and then downgraded.

I second that. I tried to use Windows 10 but it just looks too much like old technology. I feels like I'm using a 15 year old version of Linux because of all the flat graphics.

Actual menus?!
OMG YES PLEASE

Xaw is the most retro thing ever.
Also, PRETTY!

Also, PRETTY!
Sure? That background doesn't seem vomit inducing enough for your preferences.
-
-
Well, using it today would be retro as heck.
-
Someone make a Windows 8.1/10 Theme for this plz!
-
You think you are joking, as soon as Apple buys into it, Gnome follows blindly.
-
-
-
Yup. All about the presentation.

Nah, they're just the things that keep up their idea of hype.
