Status: So yesterday Microsoft blocked updating from the preview to RTM until today, because hvxfhogssyhbd. So I put my old hard drive back in and waited. This morning, I grabbed the iso off msdn, and started updating my lame testing laptop to the RTM from preview, which is possible again today.
So no news about the new system you can't get from someone else. Still dodged the major upgrade waves.

Top tip: Don't put "kern" into GIS at while in the office.
Yeah...wasn't expecting that...
Apparently there is a guy with the last name of Kern that takes a lot of risque photos.

often, it's possible to trim things by leaving some parts implicit.
Unless this is meant to be a guide for users, then it is best to state all the things as they cannot understand anything that is implied...

This just happens all the time. My fonts are furry conventions, talking about font issues gets you some weird photos apparently...
Actually, it just seems to happen when I talk about fonts and typesetting. Maybe there's a connection!

I do not see how that could turn out edible
Hot water makes assorted things diffuse out of the garlic cloves. Result is a garlic variation on a light vegetable stock.
Exactly. The recipe actually starts with a vegetable stock (recipe on previous page), then adds the garlic to it.

i almost never see the desktop
There's a desktop behind my windows? Hmm, I wonder what it looks like? :)

It's supposed to get back up to 100 outside on Thursday.
I had a job interview in Bay Area yesterday. When I was finished, I walked outside, still wearing coat and tie. It was 100. It was nice.

on't expect many posts, because mobile.
Google speech to text works pretty good for that.
Of course, that would still require being able to get Discourse to allow me to reply. Safari, ancient iOS device (not sure of versions, and CBA to check), unpossible. I think I've done it once, quite a while ago, but it sure wouldn't let me yesterday.

New(ish) bug: Using J/K to navigate through posts, if next post is long, J jumps to the middle of the post, not the top.

Ah, well, there's your problem, or at least one or two of them. Maybe when you get that new job you can budget for a more modern phone.

Maybe when you get that new job you can budget for a more modern phone.
I should be so lucky. I haven't gotten an actual offer, yet, but I got a phone call this morning trying to shave $2 or $3 off a rate that I'm already not sure I can afford to live on. I'm hoping I can afford housing better than renting a room in somebody else's house. Maybe, if I'm lucky, I can get a studio apartment for less than 2x what I'm paying for the 2-bedroom house I'm renting now. Electronic gadgets are pretty low on the financial priority list.

Ugh, moving to a more expensive locality. Well, good luck.

Yeah, unfortunately, this area is great for software, but there aren't all that many companies that make chips. I've seen a couple relevant listings at MS (Surface, I think), and I've applied but not heard anything. Silicon Valley is where chip jobs are.

[3:02:08 PM] WW - Henry Harvey: I am currently jumping through hoops to make Microsoft let me download Windows 10
[3:02:31 PM] blakeyrat: What hoops? It's free unless you have Vista
[3:02:42 PM] WW - Henry Harvey: Yeah but it's just not doing anything
[3:02:50 PM] blakeyrat: That's because you didn't look at this Gif long enough:

I mean, what we've got here is a ninja cat waving a flag on the back of a T-Rex with those grabber arm things. The day someone drew this, the world became a slightly better place.

They should've totally made it into a loading screen for something.

Status: Upgraded to W10. It ate GeForce Experience (awww, nobody's sad, right?) and decided I have a "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter", and did that annoying thing where it undersizes the display, so the first thing I have to do is get the new NVidia driver.

Chrome introduced a new regression lately
They broke Google Voice, too. Now they make you use Hangouts, which can't figure out how to not send the audio to your speakers instead of something sensible like your headset.

It's free unless you have Vista
If I have Ubuntu 7.04, do I get a free Windows 10?
More to the point, do people running Windows XP get forced upgrades to 10?

Dammit! I was trying to sneak up on that one!
-
Not mine.
It's definitely noticeable here. More supposedly-annual plants are surviving the winter in the garden, and there's typically fewer snow days per year. That said, we'll probably get a heavy winter this year because I've opened my big mouth.
This summer's been shit though. Damnable El Niño year; it shifts the jet-stream route, bringing us more storms than usual…

Is that perhaps why it's freezing (near literally at night) in the UK at the moment?

I've lived in this area for roughly 20 years (though not continuously). The last couple of winters have been much colder. Snow comes and goes. This area is basically on a line dividing where snow turns to rain, so you can never tell which way things will go.
-
That should slow up automatically after a few minutes.
-

I think so. I've had to put the winter layers back on my bed.
The last couple of winters have been much colder. Snow comes and goes.
For much of the US, it depends a lot on whether the weather is coming from northern Canada or the Gulf; the Rockies and Appalachians mean that those are the dominant patterns.
For the UK, the dominant weather comes out of the mid-Atlantic, driven by the exact track of the (northern hemisphere, mid-latitude) Jet Stream. It tends to be comparatively mild (thanks, Gulf Stream!) but not really very warm; it is north of the 50th parallel after all. When the Jet Stream loops north, we get warm and even hot weather dragged up from Spain and the Sahara. When it loops south, we get arctic air. At the moment, it's not particularly looping either way and so we're getting lots of storms out of mid-Atlantic.
And it's a cold spell at the moment.

It did eventually, and I rebooted, and the display came back.
I let it convert my local account to a Microsoft one but I think I'm going to undo that because I don't wanna have to type in a 10-char password every time I wanna wake it up from sleep.
Tried to do my work comp this morning, but when I got to the "go ahead and install" the window silently disappeared.

Can't you just turn off requiring a password on resume after the screensaver kicking in? Or was that “helpfully” removed?
-
pretty sure you can disable that, and It switched me to a pin. You can also switch to a voice recognition logon if you want.
-

Haven't looked yet. But there's still system logon. You do still have to reboot every once in a while.
-

One of the betas offered me that, but not the release, at least so far. But I'd rather not have to type a password to get in to my personal pc.
Also I don't have a mic.
