Emergency Capacitive Resistance Screen
yeah.... i may be a little bit of an ME nutcase....
of course i also named my phone Nazara and my Nexus 7 is Soverign, the Nexus 9 will likely be called Harbinger (theme much?)
-
Back when I was a complete noob at programming, I tried using this game creation software called BYOND. It's standard movable thing was called a 'mob' or 'mobile object' - I think this may not be limited to only this scope.
MOB is the standard MUD terminology. (Dates it to 1988 or so.) Not sure if MUDs invented it, though, it might be older than that.
Interestingly (or perhaps boring as shit), Gamebryo/Creation engine calls moveable characters "actors". It would be a much better term, except they also overload "actor" to include things like, "visual templates for the character creator".
-
It's apparently older than everyone thought.
Except me, because Blakeyrat KNOWS ALL AND SEES ALL.

correction... it is called Harbinger.
and for completeness the laptop that i've had for ages is Liara
desktops break the pattern. previous one was Amaterasu (and will probably keep the name when i recommission it into a server) current one is Tsukiyomi

AND SEES ALL THE ABOVE POSTS THAT SAY WHAT I JUST POSTED.
FTFY
To be fair, its inside Hungrier's link, so you may not have seen it... Except that you quoted it...
-
I read top-to-bottom and posted as I go. You have no evidence. You will just have to trust that it is true.
I also wrote code and admined a MUD between about 1997 and 2006. Again, you have no evidence. You will just have to trust that it is true.
Similarly, I know all and see all. You have no evidence. You will just have to trust that it is true.

I'm not actually claiming you read it first, but you quoted the post with the link to the data. Therefore I was able to FTFY, which is generally considered humorous and at least partially in jest.

On the other hand -- you folks are stuck dealing with tab-targeting, which is worthy of a snerk by itself.
I thought this was bullshit back when I first played WoW circa 2005. "You mean I have to pick a target instead of aiming my shots?"
-
The average consumer bandwidth in 2005 made it necessary. If you wanted to sell a lot of copies, you needed it to work in 64k of bandwidth. Probably not true today. Unless you're Ben L.
-
This is true, and it was probably an impressive technical accomplishment for its time, having a large paged world and all. That doesn't mean that I'm not allowed to be frustrated with a kinematic, click-to-target model when I'm used to FPSes and Diablo-like dungeon crawlers.
-
Can you imagine trying to aim spells while using 1-9 on your keyboard and moving with wasdqe?

Sure, if I'm playing a 2-d game set on a grid.

I'd just be happy if target juggling wasn't such a source of consternation -- having to fumble with the targeting mechanic every time you want to change targets can be a recipe for disaster!
-
recipe for disaster
While we're on the topic of MMOs, RuneScape was originally just "click on target" for its entire combat system.

Most FPSes I've played both use WASD and have weapon selection bound to 1-9, so it's not unprecedented. There's always rebinding if it's uncomfortable (used to know some people who bound movement to ESDF or RDFG).
-
How often do you swap weapons while shooting? Usually they're two separate things. 1-9 in World of Warcraft are a bunch of different attacks with different cooldowns that you need to keep track of.
-
Not sure

Now to an actual Game Deal.
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is supposed to be $29.99 on Saturday from the Microsoft store. Best Buy will still be doing its buy two get one free deal.
Gamestop is currently accepting a Trade in value of $24 without Pro.Best Buy's current trade in value is $30, but that comes on a Best Buy gift card. Amazon currently wants $33.42 ($36.95 for Day Zero) each and I've locked that in. I might try the Day Zero edition if they have that and Best Buy will Pricematch it considering it's not the exact same version.Assuming 3 things:
-
Best Buy will price match the Microsoft Store (they should because I have a physical location within 25 miles of the store I'm going to
-
Gamestop doesn't lower its trade in price on Saturday (probably unlikely because the MS store will reveal the confirmed price on Friday)It's now $20. Now assuming Amazon doesn't lower their price -
The deal works with price matching (It should because I just price matched one of my games I bought with the deal yesterday)
Buy three copies of CoD, pricematched to the Microsoft Store. You can get CoD for $60 - $48 + tax = $12 + tax, or if you don't mind having a $60 Best buy gift card, $60 - $60 + tax = tax, if you have GCU or want to use Amazon, it's a money maker: $60 - $66 + tax = -$6 + tax
-
-
Wow, that's advanced level deal-hunting.
Add to that gas money + invested time using average programmer wage / hour.
-
That's when I run over to Red Robin between the run to Gamestop for a free milkshake with purchase over $10 every day this month.
Edit: I also haven't posted this to Slickdeals and won't unless I get quotes from both on Saturday morning.
-
Welp, now Gamestop is $20 :/
EDIT: Just added Amazon and locked that in :3 @cartman82 just made it better. Let's not assume average wage, use new grad wage :3
-
Not a game, but this is a pretty damned good deal:
Might mount one in my bathroom and have a shit-puter.
-
Wow that's a great deal. Too bad it's US only.
-
Just realized my deal probably won't work because the policy is to only price match one copy of the item.
EDIT: And it says not available in quantity limited/Deal of the Day :/

In a vaguely on-topic branch (I want a deal and it's for gaming), what graphics card should I go for to replace my 8800GTX that regularly crashes the entire computer?
I don't want anything particularly high-end, just something with decent performance at a sensible price (under £50 ideally). I'm going to leave this up to you guys because graphics card specs and reviews both confuse and irritate me. I don't give a shit about how many gigapipes of stream processors it has, I just want to play XCom and Civ V.
-
under.... 50 quid......
DOES NOT COMPUTE.avi
-
-
Is that ridiculously low? I honestly have no idea. What would something comparable to the 8800GTX set me back? I bought that on eBay for a steal but it did require some work with the snips to fit it in my case
-
Is that ridiculously low?
that's not what's causing our cognitive dissonance.
it's the implied age of your gaming rig.
-
Built it in 2010 for about £350, Dual core 3.2GHz core i5 and recently upgraded to 12GB of RAM. Since losing faith in the graphics card I'm on the fallback of integrated Intel graphics, so almost anything will be a step up right now
-
Take a look at this: it had recommendations for multiple price brackets with what they consider high bang-for-the-buck.
They recommend the GeForce 730 64-bit GDDR5 for ~70USD. But if you want modernish games to play well, you should probably spend more. I personally wouldn't buy a video card for gaming that didn't cost less than about twice that (retail), though. I have a 650 Ti Boost that's already starting to feel a bit long in the tooth.

Almost anything is better than an 8800GTX.
-
Almost anything is better than an 8800GTX.
I've got a nice GeForce 210 here, only used by a little old lady who played Bingo on Sundays.
-
But it's so big and noisy. It must be doing something

In that case I recommend you buy a UNIVAC.
-
Will that play Sonic 2 ad 480p? I want at least 20 fps

This looks like a decent balance judging by that list:
-
JSYN, the article mentioned the 250X, not the 250. Of course you have to decide how much power you want and how much money you're willing to spend. If you want 1080p with high detail, you'll probably want a better card. The 250's probably OK for the likes of Civ V.

didn't wait for it to cool down before you picked it up did you?
I'm currently rocking an Nvidia GTX 970 and you'll have to fight me and my very sharp teeth to get it from me.
i think that's a bit too high end for what @jaloopa is looking for anyway.

Radeon X1950 XTX
I miss my GeForce 2.
There, have a deal - Antichamber for 1,50 euro. Portal was too easy? Have a go with that.
-
I played that game once. For like 10 hours. I don't have a lot of difficulty resisting the urge to play it.
-
Antichamber is more annoying than interesting. Half the puzzles are, "ok it took me a couple minutes to figure it out-- now it takes a fucking HALF HOUR to implement my solution, and if I miss a single pixel I have to start over."
In comparison, Portal is like, "ok, it took me a couple minutes to figure it out and less than a minute to implement my solution, so if I do something wrong I can start it over with very little time/effort lost."
I also have no urge to replay Antichamber . At least, say, Kairo gives me the sense I'm missing something while I play it. At least Quantum Conundrum had a cute mascot cat thing. Antichamber just makes me think Antichamber is an annoying game.
-
I really enjoyed Antichamber. Short game but worth the price.

I name all my computing devices after stars. At the moment, I have a NAS called Antares, my Brix is called Aldebaran, my laptop is Procyon, I have a netbook called Sirius. My old phone is called Polaris IIRC, and maybe I'll christen my new one Vega. I'm sure I've also had machines called Betelgeuse, Fornax and Mira over the years. At one point I used to have a really old, slow, shitty, terrible 486 Windows XP box, so I dubbed it Pollux.
There are, like, so many many star names that you can go for years and years without running out...
