Windows needs an undo button.
-
So I'm messing around in Hammer or whatever. I go to drag something. Perfectly normal feature of any operating system - I press the mouse button, move the mouse, and release the mouse button.
Sometimes I sneeze or my shitty mouse fucks up. Then I get something like this:
Yes, that is a feature of Windows.
Now, normally when my mouse fucks up, it doesn't just go in one direction and stop. I get random signals for a second or so. But that's much more time than is needed to fuck me over completely.
Here's what always happens next:
See? Windows is helping me because it knows it's a common thing to want to have a 960×1080 monitor and the other half indigo. And because my entire screen just changed color and all my stuff disappeared, I let go of the mouse, which is what startled people do.
This can't be too bad, right? I can just drag it back over, right?
Well fuck you too, Windows.
Today I decided that I never wanted to have this happen again. So I go Google it. Apparently there are approximately 10000000007 features of Windows named "snap". I find several SuperUser questions, all pointing to each other, and all with comments saying they don't work anymore. I see a few forums where the same question has been asked, always getting the response "This is a feature of Windows now. You're screwed."
I can understand why someone might want the left half of their screen showing an extremely letterboxed movie while the right half shows a slideshow of their last camping trip, but if Windows is going to "help" me by messing up all my... windows... then the least it could do is attempt to put them back the way they were when I fix its fuck up.
Windows needs an undo button.

That's that Windows 8.* split screen feature thingy.... I don't think you can turn it off...
Aero Snap on the other hand is freaking useful and an awesome thing period.
EDIT: It's actually not a thing on 10, so that would be 8.* not 8+

Guess which one can be disabled!

Guess which one can be disabled!
So your complaint boils down to "oh noes, windows resized my window on me!" ?
You know, the FWP thread is [arrows].
-
I think the point is that it doesn't restore it to original size, like Aero (and any other type of snapping [in a non-tiling window manager]) does.
-
Here's what a much better operating system does:
I drag it to the right edge of the screen...
I let go...
If I want it back to normal, all I need to do is grab it and drag a nonzero distance:
I wonder why Windows 8.1 can't be more like Windows 8.1wait what was that again?

Windows needs an undo button.
According to blakey, you should be able to undo anything. All the time. No matter what. If you soak your laptop in gasoline and light it on fire, there should be an undo for that, lest you fall prey to the silly open sores software pitfalls.
-

If only you had dragged the window a bit farther, you would have discovered the splitter bar will go away, and you could've gotten your whole-monitor desktop back!

Yay discoverability!

Yay discoverability!
It's not even discoverability! He had to move the window already to get the splitter to show.

Mine doesn't seem to do it, so either I'm not getting how you trigger it, or I've some how disabled it.
-
You need a mouse that isn't defective.

Put the mouse at the top of the desktop, click, drag down until you see the effect in Ben's second screenshot.
Also, if your mouse isn't defective, you can let go as soon as you see it start, and the desktop will pop back. Or you could mouse up while still holding the button.

Nope.
edit: Oh, it got disabled when the "hot corners" did.

Yeah, yeah, we all know, Windows is designed to not work with defective hardware...

So, blakey should have a Chromebook?

Windows 8 is TRWTF but this may also be a PEBCAK issue.
-
Silly single-monitor problems. Try working with a laptop and an external flatscreen monitor. Half my apps insist on always opening up in the laptop screen, and the other half maximize to the laptop screen even when the unmaximized window was in the flatscreen when I told it to max.
Worse yet, whatever you do, don't pull that "rotate screen image" crap, because going back to the original orientation never puts things back where they were.
-
Today I opened Magicka 2 Sneak Peek and it started windowed at what appeared to be 720p, and before it rendered anything it switched to fullscreen at 720p. On my 1080p monitor.
Why is borderless fullscreen windowed not the default option on every game ever?
-
borderless fullscreen windowed
In what way is that better than actual fullscreen? How would I know if a game was one or the other?
-
The easiest way to know is that when you alt-tab you don't have to wait for the game to minimize itself - the OS just swaps another window in front.
It also means that if they guess wrong, you get a window that covers part of your screen instead of fucking up all the window positioning on your screen.
-
The bug actually makes sense now?
-
That's it. I'm not getting a chromebook if it means I'll get interrupted like that all the time.
-
So Windows is bad, because you performed a well-documented action and... it worked as intended. Oh right.
And, of course, there's a gajillion of third-party apps that disable it.
-
And, of course, there's a gajillion of third-party apps that disable it.
But, as we all know, running third-party programs on your Linux hardware causes Windows to crash.

To be fair, Windows hardware is non-flammable.

The biggest offender on my system that does this crap is pgAdmin. Every freaking time it opens a new window it's a gamble as where it will end up. Usually on the other monitor. As in, if pgAdmin is open on the primary monitor, it will open new windows on the secondary. Or vice-versa. Some of them. Some of the time. There's seriously no rhyme or reason.
And there's also the time when it decides to open a window using the previous size (it remembered something!) on the wrong monitor. Which is fun when it was resized to something like 1400x900, and it opens on the 1366x768 laptop display. With titlebar way off fucking screen. Thank fuck for Alt + RClick to resize.

GIMP's an offender in that regard too. On Windiws anyway.
-

Is that what ZSNES does that makes it so damn hard to capture video from?
-
-
-
Both. ZSNES has one of the weirdest GUIs ever and you're doing it wrong for still using it - it hasn't been maintained for ages and lags far behind in terms of accuracy.
-
it hasn't been maintained for ages
Depending on your definition of 'ages' I haven't used it in ages either. I really should go back and finish my LP though. It's been literal years since I recorded an episode :/
-
Windiws
I would expect MS to make objection to a Linux distro make such blatant use of it registered trade mark OS name.
-

GIMP is just generally an offender. The only thing that comes close is the file-open dialog on Blender-for-Windows which, in the last version I tried (2-3 years ago) didn't support, in any way at all, loading files from UNC paths. No, to load over the network, you had to (and probably still have to) use Explorer or "net use" to map a drive letter to the share where the file is, and then load it.
-

GTAV for PC it is.
surprised the hell out of me really, but in a good way.

So, what do the cool kids use these days?
-
I use higan, personally. Works great for anything other than GBA. Then again, I haven't been able to set the BIOS up properly, so that's probably where the slowness comes from.
-
mednafen is great! And it shares (some? most?) of its SNES emulation code with higan.
Although, mednafen and higan are both rather demanding. Snes9x is less good but also more performant on slower machines.

What's the point of a more demanding one? Why is SNES9X less good? They all (including the maligned ZSNES) just play SNES games right?
-
-
Blocked. I assume the demanding ones are better emulated?
Never had an issue with ZSNES personally.

Put it on a Linux system that uses PulseAudio. Let me know when you get it to play audio properly without being choppy.
-
Yes. Things like game speed can be very different depending on emulation quality. Frame timing accuracy is, for example, a huge deal for speedruns.
-
I... would not be using Linux, for anything, ever, if I can help it :P

Fair enough, for certain folks I can see how that'd be vital. I actually find ZSNES's chunky old interface endearing :)

Changing your desktop's resolution happens in both real and windowed fullscreen.Which is fun when it was resized to something like 1400x900, and it opens on the 1366x768 laptop display. With titlebar way off fucking screen. Thank fuck for Alt + RClick to resize.
Windows 8 has a cool feature that when your window is partially off-screen, if you put mouse pointer on the edge of screen where the window is and try to move beyond the edge, the window will gradually come back within screen space.Put it onBoot a Linux system that uses PulseAudio. Let me know when you get it to play audio properly without being choppy.

Windows 8 has a cool feature
And every decent window manager ever has a feature where you can hold a modifier button, click anywhere on the window and move it that way. The better ones even have a feature where you can use the same modifier to resize it using a different mouse button.
