:-) I figured. Nooby distributions should have that in their intro tutorial.
Tip 1: If you ever get stuck inside a black screen where nothing works, type
:q!
and press enter.

Good thing it was inside the terminal emulator so I could just close it. Don't know if I was even aware of multiple ttys at that point.
And fuck you Dicsourse, my posting is not preventing anyone else from replying, shut up!

After pushing ^C once:

Yeah, isn't that nice? Those programs that know exactly what you're trying to do, and yet instead of doing it, they feel the need to berate you that You're Doing It Wrong.
I vaguely remember almost punching the monitor when I typed "exit" somewhere, and it told me to "use 'quit' instead".

I was gonna post something super witty that would have made my fragile personality truly blossom through, but Onyx's torrent of posts was too much to handle. I guess I'll just go back to sitting under a shower and cutting myself...
-
^C is used as the second chord in some vim commands. If they killed the process whenever you pushed ^C, it would be a lot easier to accidentally lose all your work.
-
My keyboard has 101 keys, and they couldn't figure out a combination which doesn't abuse the most commonly used system-wide command.
Did vim folks study under Atwood, or what?
-
The most commonly used system-wide command is "send SIGINT to the current foreground process"?

For me, yes.

The derivation of COCK out of CDCK and its whinnet-ridden church is nothing new.

Fear not; he never had any.

Why are you using a torrented Visual Studio when the express versions are free as in beer?

You will need at least a Tip 2 in case somebody fools you into runninged
.

In honor of this, I will now add a constant to my user stats userscript:

CLOSED BYDESIGN
as apparently comparingpenis sizepostcounts is considered a barrier to discourse.

Yup, because people with serious e-peen and no life are a barrier to discourse. (Says the guy with 3.5k posts here since 11 June)

killall viWhat? Oh. Sorry. Wrong window.
I force-rebooted a server once because I couldn't figure out how to close vi. The file was becoming progressively more mangled with each attempt and I feared I might accidentally save it.
I set $VISUAL to nano instead immediately after.
I can use vi properly now but I don't like it. The interface is purposefully obtuse.
[Also, fuck you Discourse. I had to reload this page because the reply and cancel buttons decided to vanish from below the reply box. Web3.0 cess-pit]

Syntax highlighting? Are you drunk?

You can take Notepad++ off me when you can pry it from my cold dead hands.
I hear it gives you menu cancer.

Syntax highlighting? Are you drunk?
It thinks it's SQL. Here's the PHP version:
$crappyButOracleLovesItForAreaXXX = "and location in (select location from locations where area = 'XXX')"; $theWayEveryOtherQueryWorksJustFine = "and area = 'XXX'";

I rarely use the Reply button any more. Ctrl-Enter is equivalent.

"discoverable"
To be fair, it is/was a pretty standard shortcut in IM clients. Though usually it's the other way around: CtrlEnter, or, in some cases, ShiftEnter is new line, while Enter is send.
I did have ICQ set to the way it's on Discourse at one time though.
-

And email clients - it's certainly the default in Outlook.
Despite being aware of that though, I still wouldn't have thought to try it in Discurse.
-
You can use Ctrl-Enter to reply? I've been using TabEnter all this time.
It's one thing Jeff and co didn't break.
-
-
You mean I should just wait until 1.0?

>Tip 1: If you ever get stuck inside a black screen where nothing works, type :q!and press enter.
If nothing works you will have a hard time to type :q! and press enter.. because by definition it won't work!
Filed Under: guess who is feeling pedantic today

Insufficient dickweedery to justify pedantry badge.
-
don't worry, I can keep going:
If nothing works you will have a hard time to type :q! and press enter.. because by definition it won't work!
Unless you don't have a keyboard or something similar, you won't have a hard time typing :q! and pressing Enter. It might not do anything if nothing works but thats a whole different problem
Filed Under: Wow... I dickweeded myself! I must be pretty bored...

And still not enough pedantry to earn a badge.

I am not even going for a badge. I am just slightly bored
Addendum: How could I get a pedantry dickweed badge in this enviorment anyway. There are way too many high level player for a humble guy like me?!

I only do this by accident, followed by some swearing and a ninja edit.
Almost Related: Cleaning up the escaped html in quotes reminds me of cleaning up the raw formatting of a quote in CS.
-
I only do this by accident, followed by some swearing and a ninja edit.
Which is exactly why I have the Ctrl+Enter shortcut disabled in Outlook - no ninja editing to save me if I send a half written email out.
-
Outlook doing ninja stuff? More like super-slow anti-samourai.

Tool-tip on hover; I wouldn't have discovered it otherwise.
-
And tooltips on hovering are so discoverable.
-
They are if you are using a real computer, not some mobile touch-screen .
:P
Disclaimer: The company I work for makes something related to touch-screens (in the interest of anonymity, I won't be more specific); therefore, touch-screens are double-plus-good. Buy more of them.
-
Even on a real computer, I would not suggest they were especially discoverable.
Remember: tooltips were actually suggested as a legitimate fix to our complaints about the progress bar.
-

Damn straight, Skippy. It's another Discourse consistency victim - most of the tooltips expectedly give you information on what it does - hovering the like button displays 'like this post' (I'll let the lack of capitalisation slide for now) so I'd expect the one for Reply to be along the lines of 'submit the reply to this post' and not be a hint of how to avoid pressing the button.
-
Tab + Space for me

That reminds me, what ever happened to BlakeyRat?

-
At least Reply has a tooltip... poor Cancel isn't even a button, it's an underlined text and has no tooltip at all!!
-
Which is also perversely inconsistent with Discourse's UI/UX design ethic.
