Ballsacked my employer today
Today was a the last straw and I walked out.
I had an email last friday that started with:
- There should be an SQL Database called "database name"
Then a butch of requirements about how the data should be structured. This email was 20 minutes after I had a meeting about database design for a particular project.
I went about listing all the things that would need to be stored and it seemed quite obvious I should create an ERD.
I started spoke to two senior colleagues about my database design and they seemed to be happy with it. It was standard 3rd normal form.
I had a meeting today, presented my ERD to the CTO and he agreed with some minor changes. I then went away and started implementing said changes. Later on in the afternoon I was brought into the office for a one to one.
Apparently the CTO had made the database and I was told I had wasted my time. Even though both me and the senior engineers hadn't known about it.
This was after a long number of things I almost walked out about and I thought "fuck it there are plenty of jobs out there".

Can't fix you iDevice
FFS, I just fixed my my brothers iPhone 5 because of a broken screen. Hopefully it won't get bricked.
I've been forced to buy an Mac Mini because a client wants a iphone app. I was thinking of upgrading it to an SSD. Probably won't risk it now.
Fucking Apple

RE: 🔥 I see Korean mercenaries talking to the same restaurant in Utah! Should I go eat 💩?!
The church would have lost their tax free status due to polygamy issues and suddenly it is revealed through prayer that maybe the whole polygamy thing wasn't a good idea.
I highly doubt that the revelations was divine, unless God lives in your wallet.

My own WTF interview
After reading the latest article the Amazon River article, I wanted to share my own WTF interview.
I had been put forward by a recruiter for an interview with a local web dev company that seemed to build standard content websites powered by popular CMS systems such as Wordpress, Umbraco etc.
I was forewarned by the recruiter that several applicants have found that the interview was quite tricky. I thought they meant tricky as in many technical questions. Not so.
I phoned ahead to say that I had problems finding the place as they had two properties in close proximity and I went to the wrong one. Luckily I wasn't late and I was asked first to sit at Reception. I was made to wait 15-20 minutes.
Eventually I was called up and I was sat opposite a young woman in her late twenties and an older man looked like he was in his late forties.
In front of me was a very small glass and a ridiculous jug that was filled the brim. What followed was a 1 and a half hour good cop / bad cop routine. First I was quizzed as to why I thought being late was acceptable, I said "Firstly I wasn't late and I had phoned in advance to warn them that I maybe a few minutes late as I had problems finding the building".
I was repeatedly asked one question by the young woman and then had my answer thrown back at me by the older gentleman. Questions were in the form of "How would you do task X". The retort from the older gentle was usually in the form of "why is that good for the business?" and I had no direct answer because it wasn't what I was originally asked to answer.
It took me about 4 or 5 questions to realise what was going on. I didn't have any good retorts at first because my mind was still reeling from the absurdity of it. I was then asked "In what order would importance would you put the following qualities, cost, aesthetics and function?", I answered them with my personal reasoning and then the older guy said "How does that benefit the business?" ... at that point I retorted "That is not what you asked me, if you wanted to know that you should have asked me different question".
They realised the game was up and they started to try to explain the ridiculous interview technique and at this point I had decided that I would never work for them. I asked them quite honestly why they thought this was a good idea and excused myself.

RE: Cell phones! (a/k/a I can haz SSDD?)
In the future it will be some sort of mobile phone benchmark tool, "how long can your browser runs discourse before it overheats and catches on fire".
-
RE: Discourse is slow on Android. Why?
So far I learn't that Jeff can't peek into an open source project and see where they might be quick wins in optimizing the performance.
The JS performance is almost secondary to the whole argument anyway. Discourse performs badly on any phone when you don't have ideal network conditions due to how it loads new posts and it is constantly trying to repaint while this happens. This is compounded when you have a smaller the phone screen, so it loads less posts at once causing more network traffic and more repaints. The two combined kill the perceived performance.
This should have been sorted ages ago and blaming JS performance is lazy when you are loading up new data in a retarded manner.
-
RE: How slow is Discourse on your mobile?
You would be silly not to, at least on our site we have seen the numbers go from almost 0% to 5% in 3 months on our website and we have about half a million users on mobile.
Also there are a lot of people on phones which will likely not ever get android update so it doesn't matter if Google release a better Android browser because they won't get it unless they are releasing a hacked firmware. The same will happen to current gen phones at some point.

RE: Smashing the Vegetarian Vaccination Binary! #BecauseScienceIsStillAThing
No because you are inadvertently promoting:
- Not having kids immunized based on iffy evidence (It was Jonas Salk's 100th birthday this week FFS).
- Having labels such as organic are somehow magically better for you despite no evidence and this might hurt
future high yield (GMO) crops that could save many millions from starvation and food shortages.
Both beliefs you hold will adversely affect many people in the future because you are putting your personal experience in front of rigorous research.

RE: Programming Confessions Thread
OK you got me, but kinda didn't.
I do high performance JS, and it is pretty much a joke around these parts.

RE: The minor rants thread.
I've just started my own business.
So far it has had a lot of:
- Scanning
- Printing
Most of this was to prove that I who I said I was.
Now, my scanner natural orientation was the wrong way round for everything and I had to flip every scan.
Emailing the proof I couldn't exceed 1MB so I emailed the link to my domain which was fine ... but surely that misses the point.

This page? Displaying a datatable.
[/q]The magic word "depends" (in regard you what you are trying to achieve).

RE: Programming Confessions Thread
Maybe, I honestly think repaint is a bigger problem in terms of performance than jquery functions.
It depends what you are doing. In the forum case, it has to fucking reload everything that it thinks is relevant to the thread on every scroll ... which is massively inefficient.

BTW if anyone thinks I am being disingenuous 60hz on apps is a real thing.
