Badge suggestions - ones with added thought
-
Semi-official topic for the suggestion of new badge types. Please read the rest of the first post...
Continuing the discussion from The Official "Likes" Thread: http://what.thedailywtf.com/t/the-official-likes-thread/1000/2367...
There are lots of titles being suggested for the badges, but I've been seeing very little in the way of criteria for awarding them.. think I'll start another thread with the requirements for suggestions.
Requirements topic for your suggestions. Your template to copy/paste is:
Bronze name: Bronze requirements: Silver name: Silver requirements: Gold name: Gold requirements: Icon name: Multiple awards:
The bronze/silver/gold names are the short titles for the awards which will appear in post headers and as short descriptions in the left column at http://what.thedailywtf.com/badges. Names between types apparently can be the same, but I'm sure you can be creative and make them sufficiently different...
The requirements will be used as criteria for awarding the badge, and will appear in the middle column of http://what.thedailywtf.com/badges
The icon name should be selected from http://fortawesome.github.io/Font-Awesome/icons/ -
please try to avoid the 4.1 version icons at the top of that page for the moment since I don't think DC has upgraded FA recently.DC updated to 4.1.0.Multiple awards is whether people can have more than one of them or not.
For example, for the liked posts awards:
Bronze name: Nice Post
Bronze requirements: Received 10 likes on a postSilver name: Good Post
Silver requirements: Received 25 likes on a postGold name: Great Post
Gold requirements: Received 100 likes on a postIcon name: fa-certificate
Multiple awards: YesThere will, no doubt, be circumstances where it won't make sense to have 'levels' of award. But make it clear anyway if you feel/it is the case.
Note that this is to get firm ideas for badges rather than the free-for-all random suggestions that seems to be going on else-threads.
And no - just because you make a suggestion here, doesn't mean it'll actually get implemented. As pointed out previously, these awards will have to be manually awarded...

Are there long names/titles available anywhere? Also, if "Multiple awards" is "No," can bronze, silver and gold be still be separately awarded?
-
Are there long names/titles available anywhere?
No. The form I have available to fill out is:
Also, if "Multiple awards" is "No," can bronze, silver and gold be still be separately awarded?
Yes - you can have one of each.
Though normally (but not enforced, certainly not in software) I wouldn't normally expect anyone to get (say) Gold without first meeting the criteria for Silver and Bronze first.
-
Also, if "Multiple awards" is "No," can bronze, silver and gold be still be separately awarded?
If it works like SO, then yeah, I think there is no actual tie between bronze, silver, and gold version of a badge. It just makes sense to have a bronze badge be "smaller" than a gold one.
Also, do we go for the objectively assignable stuff, or can we actually get "Blakeyrant", "Pedantic dickweedery" and "Worst of the Worst" badges?
-
or can we actually get "Blakeyrant", "Pedantic dickweedery" and "Worst of the Worst" badges?
If you can somehow subjectively/objectively squeeze them into a 3-tier series of awards with coherent requirements, I'd probably be more inclined to give them some credence...
IOW, possibly.
-
Do bear in mind I'm playing this by ear at the moment, and have no idea how big the hole I'm digging either is at the moment, or is likely to be if I decide this is a very bad idea and drop it totally...
-
if I decide this is a very bad idea and drop it totally...
This could be the best outcome for us early abusers, since we could get these badges before they are no longer awarded.

Agreed. I'm already one step ahead of the game. Behold my glorious title badge thing!

May I draw your attention to the right hand edge of this image...

Don't think I didn't notice you and @Nagesh showing that shit off all over the forum.

And me! Don't forget me!!

Can we have a category that everyone else can see, but only us special badge people can post in?
-
You're an admin, so you already have your trophy. I don't begrudge you having a title.
-
On second thought, I'm not sure if I want to be part of topics in which @Nagesh represents a third of the possible contributors...

us special badge people
My 7 year old likes your avatar. He's the only reason I know what it is.

Your 7 year old is super cool. His buildings are safe for now.
Edit: Hold on, you let a 7 year old view TDWTF forums? I'm pretty sure that's child abuse.

Peasants may nominate worthy posts by flagging said posts for moderator attention.Icon name: The most suitable one would be, I think, fa-graduation-cap, but that's one of the new ones. (Any chance of DC upgrading FA, @sam?) Of the older ones, fa-book is maybe the best.
Multiple awards: NoEdit: BUG: FA has no purple dildo icon

We only let him play on a server I run locally, so they're safe whether you want them to be safe or not. He, OTOH, seems to have a thing about breaking stuff.
-

No. Settings are largely based on user levels plus staff categories:

so they're safe whether you want them to be safe or not
I meant from creeper attack.

I suppose you're going to have to make @Nagesh and me moderators =/.

a 3-tier series of awards with coherent requirements
Pretty much the only thing you can reasonably 3-tier are the "x likes", "x posts", "x days" stuff. Boooooring.
But hell, I'll try.
Bronze name: Kindling a flame Bronze requirements: Start a thread with 50 replies Silver name: We changed the topic anyway Silver requirements: Start a thread with 150 replies Gold name: PARADE! Gold requirements: Start a thread with 300 replies Icon name: fa-fire Multiple awards: yes
Bronze name: WONTFIX Bronze requirements: Have your thread locked Icon name: fa-lock Multiple awards: no (maybe? whatever?)
Bronze name: Well, it's a beta Bronze requirements: Vocally support Discourse 1 time Silver name: Stockholm Syndrome Silver requirements: Vocally support Discourse 3 times Gold name: Jeff's Sockpuppet Gold requirements: Vocally support Discourse 5 times Icon name: fa-heart(-o) Multiple awards: no
Silver name: The Derailer Silver requirements: Derail a thread for at least 50 posts Icon: fa-code-fork Multiple awards: yes(?)
Silver name: The Rat's Apprentice Silver requirements: Evade Discourse's civil discussion policy by posting an all-caps post Icon: fa-bullhorn Multiple awards: no
And the last one I'm not sure how to count, but here we go:
Bronze name: Filed Under Bronze requirements: Use 50 tags Silver name: I miss CS Silver requirements: Use 100 tags Gold name: We need a new tag cloud Gold requirements: Use 200 tags Icon name: fa-tags Multiple awards: no
Edit(PJH):
-
I'm going to analyze my list and see if I can render the list down to an acheiveable list. With a few outliers for fun and profit.
I can see these already being bronze badges.
- troll
- sock puppet
But need some requirements.
filed under: I know everyone will want a sock puppet badge

I suppose you're going to have to make @Nagesh and me moderators =/.
Well there is the 'Frequent Flier's Lounge' concept mentioned here:

troll
sock puppetHmm. X number of (separate?) nominations for the former perhaps? X=5(b),50(s),500(g)?
Second would have to be at least independently verifiable by an admin, with perhaps the recipient making it (b) obvious, (s) not at all obvious, (g) managing to make it for X posts, or Y days/weeks/monhts before being 'outed.' Possibly with opposing 'sock-puppet hunter' for the person to nominate (with reasons) the sockpuppet.
e.g. Alice successfully sock-puppets as Bob for 3 months. Charles figures out at that point that Bob is actually Alice. Admin independantly verifies the fact somehow.
Alice gets Gold Sockpuppet, Charles, for getting it, gets Gold Sockpuppet-Hunter.One Sockpuppet award for the original account that was the puppet, hunters can get multiple.
Sounds like too much hard work though...
-
Sounds like too much hard work though...
Maybe...once we get higher level stuff, the higher level posters can nominate / vote on badge awards in addition to admin granted badges. Obviously, that requires more DC development, but it gives an easy out for stuff that's harder to quantify.
Maybe also builds Community.
-
My original criteria for sock puppet was like 10 posts in a row of 5-7 words or less. :)
@Luhmann would auto-qualify.
-
+1 for over-thinking it into oblivion.

Silver name: The Derailer
Silver requirements: Derail a thread for at least 50 postsIcon: fa-code-fork
Multiple awards: yes(?)I think my originally suggested name of Penny on the Track would make a good bronze version of this:
Bronze name: Penny on the Track
Bronze requirements: Derail a thread for at least 25 posts
-
Cool Story, Bro - replied to a post after obviously not reading it
-
Bronze name: Penny on the TrackBronze requirements: Derail a thread for at least 25 posts

Gold requirements: Stop a thread in its tracks for 24 hours.Edit: Not a serious suggestion btw >>.

Silver requirements: Change avatar 12 times in a yearGold name: Shape Shifter
Gold requirements: Change avatar 24 times in a yearMaster requirement for all three levels: Only one change per week will be counted. Also, the initial setting of the avatar would not count.

On an unrelated note, what is up with the wall of preview-text on this topic:
Filed Under: Let's derail this topic to preview-texts being TRWTF | Also, always have > 100 unread posts when taking screenshots! It adds plausibility

So how much control is there for the requirements? Some of mine would be a pain to count and award manually.

Don't forget @Nagesh.

I have that remark about a lot of what was suggested here. Very nice suggestions but a little heavy on the counting/maintenance side. Requirements should really be clear and not fuzzy. How far does a post to be 'derailed' to count for the requirement? Is just taking the parallel track enough our do you need to do a 180 degree turn. And what if pull a 360?
-
Why in $Diet's name am I named in one breath with @Nagesh ? That stuff is insulting man. Even worse than making fun of Belgium.
Filled under: BELGIUM!

You weren't mentioned in the same breath. @Frank mentioned you, @Luhmann, then I mentioned @Nagesh .
Oops. Now you've been mentioned in the same breath as @Nagesh.

Any tracking would normally be manual - see avatar suggestion above.

Not desirable, since it is useless.

Nope. I tried to copy the format of the default first post when creating a new category of:
[summary text to appear in summary] Rest of post to be read when clicked
but that didn't work as expected. @Sam? Any way of indicating the cut-off point for the summary in the topic list for a pinned topic?
