Killed by Google

Including those on death row...
-
I'm shocked they're retiring goo.lge or whatever the fuck their shortner is. Given that the only reason those things exist is to snoop on traffic that you wouldn't otherwise be privvy to, it's right up their alley.
I wonder if this also means a butt-ton of links are going to all go dead at once.
-

Not yet, apparently.
The service has not been accepting new users since April 13, 2018 and Google will discontinue the service for existing users on March 30, 2019. Links previously created will still redirect to their previous destination.
-
- Inbox: just tried it out, didn't like it
- Google+: I used it primarily to communicate with family, we've moved to Discord now
- URL Shortener: I used it for a variety of things, especially when presenting Google Slides during class presentations
- Google Now: I actually found it useful
- Google Code: I've downloaded stuff from there
- Google Video: back before I had a YouTube account
- Google Desktop: when I was very young and messing around on the family computer
And also some that aren't listed:
- Google Hangouts: not yet but it's supposedly going away
- Google Contributor: still exists but they completely nerfed it
And many deleted features and other removed functionality of products that are still around. Anyone remember Shows on YouTube? Or the Activity Feed that still exists until recently and only stopped being used because they never linked to it from anywhere and you had to guess the URL?

@LB_ said in Killed by Google:

I used this exactly once. In fact, I created a Google account under my real name expressly for the purpose of using this. For an interview with Google. I've never even thought about using it since.
-
@HardwareGeek I used to use it very heavily to communicate with friends and family, since it was on all Android devices by default and couldn't be uninstalled until recently, and it was also in Gmail Web. We've since moved to Discord.
-
@HardwareGeek My family uses it to video chat with my parents and my in-laws because it works better than Skype.
-
@djls45 Duo is good video chat. Better than Snapchat's.
-
Google Allo is an instant messaging app
That's the only one listed? Didn't they have, like, 80 different messaging/communication/mail/whatever apps they've discontinued by now?
-
@pie_flavor said in Killed by Google:

Well, duh. SpazChat only gives you ten seconds of video at a time.
-
@topspin said in Killed by Google:

I'm sure this is a collaborative list.
git pull
or something... <!-\blakey-->
-
@djls45 no, I was talking about the video chat feature.
-
Does anyone remember Google wave? I never really got what it was supposed to be for and then they killed it
-

It was supposed to be a wiki-chat-forum thing. Basically like a chat that you could edit previous messages at easy and have multiple topics etc. to organize.
-
@Tsaukpaetra I see a number of ideas from Wave in Slack.
What sucked in one sucks in the other too…

Google gave it to Apache who didn't seem to do anything with it before also killing it last year.
-
@loopback0 Apache: where software projects go to die.
(and that's not even a joke. They really do end up there)
-
It's only been 5 years since they've killed iGoogle and Reader?
They seem so distant already.
-
They recently announced a game streaming service.
I wonder how long that is going to live - a year, maybe two?
-

Really? It would be so sweet to hear sobs of those insufferable dumbasses who nag me all the time to use it.

You won't be able to hear those sobs; Hangouts will be down.

IIRC most of the good features (real time collaborative editing, embedded images or whatever) got rolled into their Drive office apps.
-
On topic, I don't know if it's listed but Google Reader was great and I wish they hadn't removed it.

Oh, they will let the world know their sadness. At the same time proclaiming their unfaltering love for Google.

but i can't use this gaming service b/c internet iz too slow and dAtA cApS
It works on my machine that's connected by fibre to the server down the street from me. CLOSED_WONT_FIX
{offline}
Well, no one's using this thing, shut it down.OR

You hear that Big Government? You constituents are starving for proper Internet.
Do you have my monthly Giant Bag of Money?
Of course.
I hereby move that Government let the FREE MARKET speak, and Google has permission to put fibre everywhere. And since they'll totally let everyone use it afterwards, let us give them billions of dollars to fund this project!
I got my so sure, I second the motion!
TEAR UP ALL THE STREETS! PUT IN ALL THE FIBRES! Don't worry, the city will clean up afterwards.
LATER
We now own all the fibres. Everyone must use it by signing up for GFibre account.
Hey, didn't you say you would give us the lines once they were built. They were funded by public money, they should be a public utility.
lol nope
Seriously, they fell for that again? Wait till I tell Comcast, they'll get a kick out of this.
Manditory to like Google account to GFiber. Please to be doing the surfing while we collect all your web visits and other assorted Internet traffic thru the servers we control.
goddamn it. but I do like playing Call of Grumpy Cat, so...

Just give everyone fixed ips and they could do all their tracking. There isn't enough ipv4, so give everyone ipv6 and they can claim to be pushing tech forward making ipv6 happen.

That's a good feature. You can lend it to some poor schmuck to gather their DNA and fingerprints while never handing it without gloves yourself.
-
Every time I see this thread, I assume it's just a list of people who used Google Maps.
-
@Lorne-Kates You're getting mixed up with Apple Maps… Google Maps only really kills people who insist on swimming the Atlantic and so on.
-
@dkf Follow Apple Maps hard enough and you too may find yourself swimming the Atlantic.
-
-
Google Play Music
-
@hungrier Well that's not good, I use GPM pretty much all day every day to listen to music while I work. I have tried using YouTube Music before and it's... not good. GPM is actually really good despite some issues they refuse to fix or address, it'll be a shame to see it go.

Yeah. I've got a lot of music stored there, including a decent amount purchased and not downloaded (yet).

Yeah, I guess our definitions of "a lot" are quite a bit different then. I'm not nearly that close.

@hungrier said in Google planning to shut down Inbox app:
Is there a more general "Google is shutting down a useful service" thread? Anyway
What
iswas it? A way for Youtube streamers to do a show where multiple people can speak and/or show video.Sounds pretty useful, why get rid of it? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Is there any replacement? You can manually kludge something together with Skype and OBS maybe
