That's like using a piece of software after it has been acquired by Adobe.

Status: I have a fun adventure ahead of me tomorrow.
They sure don't make it easy to move between cellphones unless you're one of those robots that trashes your iPhone the instant the next model up comes out.
I had exported as much of the file system from my Galaxy S4 Active as I could some time ago but only recently got around to figuring out how to export more difficult stuff like text messages and call logs. I figure contacts and apps are just impossible. This was after I finally located and received protective gear for it, which is always harder than it has to be if you're not an iRobot. Of course, the screen protector just barely fits, in both cutout placement and overall size, because Australians can't measure to save their lives. Kangaroo fucking boomerangs.
So I boot up the new phone and apparently there's an app to help me transfer everything. It's called AT&T Mobile Transfer. Supposedly, you load it on the new phone, load it on the old phone, and use the old phone to scan the QR code on the new phone. (Jesus Christ, does anything on Android work with just one phone?)
Or, it would, if it existed. Not on Google Play. Not at the AT&T address provided by AT&T's software. The site instead pushes you off to Samsung Smart Switch. It's another app that has to load on both phones, because fuck you, that's why. Only this one expects you to switch SIM cards and I guess that does the heavy lifting.
I can't switch SIM cards because the new one is about half the size of the old one. Now I never got any instructions on how to activate a phone but I was told I could do it myself if I didn't want it done in-store. Which I didn't, because I didn't trust them to save my files, because they already fucked up twice in just ordering my new phone.
Well AT&T has a site where you can enter your phone number and billing zip code to activate your phone. And it says my number is already active. You know, in the old phone I've been using for text and internet while trying to figure out this new phone. No further instructions on what to do.
So now I'll go to the AT&T store and two things will happen. One, they will be unable to activate my new phone. Two, they will discover this only after they deactivate my old phone, which they will then be unable to reactivate. Because modern technology is so super duper awesome.
-
@Zenith said in The Official Status Thread:

If the thought of cutting your sim card to size doesn't make you queasy, you can get a template like this and follow the instructions to cut it. But it is somewhat fiddly and once you do it there's no going back (you may be able to get an adapter off ebay or something, but by the time that ships you can just get a new sim card from AT&T that'll have pre-made cutouts for any size used by any phone in the last couple decades). I've personally done it twice miniSIM to micro, then micro to nano) but eventually got a new nanoSIM anyway when switching providers.

Because of "your files are right where you left them" updates that lose your files?
Anyway, in other stuff you couldn't make up, I went to download some pay stubs (what I wouldn't give for just getting a check again). My last successful attempt was the end of February 2022. I tried again sometime after that and the Indians had bungled column alignment such that anything I would've downloaded would've just been a pile of numbers scattered like bird seed on the sidewalk.
Well today I managed to get December 2022 to September 2023. After, apparently moved to a new system without my knowledge. Before, is there but printing garbles the second page. So the half hour I spent downloading March 2022 to November 2022 was wasted.
What's worse is the garbling depends on the percentage scaling. I had, historically, used 87% to get everything to fit horizontally. One of the shitty things about everything going digital is that nobody considers what fits on a piece of paper. (typical narcissist - I don't print so fuck anybody who does) Which would almost be tolerable if you could download Excel or some other formatted format. Instead of a PDF with layout properties similar to paper.
Anyway, 89% and 85% don't garble but 86% to 88% do, negating the theory that 100% would work because it's not actually scaling. Some scalings preview OK but export garbled. Fun.So now I have to figure out how to get these 8 months reprinted correctly. Assholes.
Edit: There sure are alot of worthless "print to PDF" plugins on Firefox. Virtually nothing works like the PDF driver in Chrome/Brave. (I stopped using those browsers because they broke the login button. Yes, really.) WTF should I have to set margins/scaling in another fucking page instead of a preview dialog? Retards.

TIL new devices are directly equivalent to operating system upgrades on the same device. Somehow.

Isn't your running joke that all of your stuff is broken? Get something working well and you, too, can taste the fear of losing it to any random incompetent that happens along. Seriously, does anybody else have a 9 year old phone that would still be working just fine if AT&T hadn't A) blocked the update to 4G voice and B) shut off their 3G towers?

So much easier than mucking about with ADSI Editor and database files and permissions...

By virtue of the rate of which things go wrong, I have learned methods such as this weird thing called "Backup" and "Redundancy" such that losing random devices (Up to 72 percent in fact) no longer poses any reasonable threat to my operation.
And I did it all without microservices, suck it Netflix!

My Nexus 5 (also 2013) still (Edit: says it) connects to the local T-Mobile towers to let you make emergency calls. I don't feel like paying for a month of service to see if/how well it works. I've never had AT&T service with it. (Been T-Mobile most of the time I've had cell phones.)

I always found that interesting. Since that's federal law or someshit, and thus every phone must be compatible, there's obviously infrastructure to still support it (i.e. radios etc) and so... are they actually shut down?

Dunno. I edited my post above since I'm not calling 911 to find out either, so I don't know for sure what's actually happening vs. what the icons show. My bad.

Yeah, that's the de-facto message regardless of actual connectivity if you don't have an active SIM so But I do fully expect it to work as intended so someone somehow somewhere must be making it happen.

With apps, you can find in Google's store what you have installed on other devices you own but not on the current one. It's Account (your account picture, probably top right) → Manage Apps and Device (menu item) → Manage (tab) → Not Installed (filter).
Many apps back their data up automatically so they "just work" when put on a new device. Not all; banking and security apps are typically "special".

I have a 12 year old iPhone 4S that still "works" but I don't use anymore. Well, the battery is completely fucked, so there's that, and of course what used to run perfectly smoothly a decade ago would now be glacially slow because *gestures at JavaScript*. And 3G wouldn't work anymore, I think, but 2G for calls and WiFi for data would still work.
Re activating your phone fucking up the other: that sounds completely illogical and impossible, but I never cease to be surprised by the fucked-up processes US phones go through with their carrier locks and stuff. Also, wasn't there a video by Louis Rossmann or something (might remember incorrectly) about Samsung remote deactivating some people's phones so they couldn't access their data anymore?

In 2005, I bought a sim locked phone with an O2 prepaid card. In about 2019, I decided to buy a smartphone, without any sim locks etc. The old sim card did not fit into my new phone. Went to an O2 shop, they looked at it, phoned their support line up, and then told me that I would get a new card by snail mail.
And so it happened, I received the new card, placed it into the new phone, and it worked. Btw, costs: 0. Nada. Niente. Nichts.
True that I did not have to move any data between the devices.
Still astonished by that miracle.

@BernieTheBernie they probably looked at that thing and figured you must also be wearing an onion on your belt. Probably the easiest way to get rid of you is to send you one for free.
-
@topspin How should I interprete that?
They do not make a lot of money with me - 30 Euros per year... Only recently I signed up for their (cheapest) internet plan: 150 MB at 2 Euros for 4 weeks - now my account stopped accumulating money...
Oh yes, I also tricked them: it's a real dual sim phone, and in I buy a local sim card, and then a phone call home is cheaper than a local phone call in germany (and of course far cheaper than 3 Euros per minute with O2 prepaid roaming).
