Surprised they didn't just try to add a single bit and make it /23
One of the guys suggested that, but the tech guy said "meh, let's be sure".
Getting to talk to the tech guy in person helps. Especially when I can say "(my company CEO and personal friend of the ISP/network goon's company owner) says it's really urgent".

Yeah, technically you could get away with a raspberry Pi and a flash drive, at the risk of, you know, losing everything at the whim of the Pixies.
As if that's totally not the case with any branded crap, which have years outdated OS, secret management ports open to public granting you root, SMB 1.0 running, and cryptominers installed in the factory already.

While I definitely prefer using desktop when I have access to it, now that I have a phone from this decade, I find using the forum on mobile to be ... not entirely unpleasant. I read frequently on mobile, and even post occasionally. Typing on my phone sucks, but that's a mobile problem in general, not a TDWTF problem. My experience is that the site is not even close to totally broken, nor even broken at all.
The site's users, on the other hand, ...

fixed with a firmware update on the drive.
Because Bitlocker isn't actually just a bunch of bits being locked, it apparently requires cooperation between the storage controller or someshit.
Of course, this upgrade was not obvious, because the Micron utility that supposedly manages such things claimed upwards and downwards that version 113 was totally the most recent version.
Nope, needed version 200!
Which the utility said was not a valid firmware update package (apparently it wanted a .zip file, not a ubi file).
No, had to drill down into a DOS utility to manually apply the firmware. Then all was well!

What's the basis of your objection?
- You disagree on who will do the stealing. Being European, you may be under the impression that having many "representatives" means that my interests are represented. It does not. It's just something we tell children, like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.
- You do not believe that Klaus will steal all gas cars. in that obscenely wealthy will get to keep their Ferraris and Lamborghinis (and private jets and yachts and beef and air conditioners and...) while the peasants do without.
- You have not thought as many steps ahead as I have. I can lay it all out for you but, suffice it to say, reduced demand leads to reduced supply and eventually a gas-powered car without gas (or spare parts or a compliant inspection station) is like a gun without bullets.
-
@Zenith ISTM this is well into subject matter.

@HardwareGeek said in The Official Status Thread:

Not originally it wasn't. I thought it was pretty obvious that, as new gas car sales are ended, all of the ancillary services that go with it would dwindle. Gas sales specifically. If the government is panicking about how to pay for stuff without revenue from gas taxes, and they're the slow kid on the block, how dumb is somebody that decides to build a new gas station with that hanging over their head?
But fine, let's just all agree it's a good thing it's not another fucking vaping shop. It's a joke that we have alot of pizza shops in town but today I learned that vaping shops are catching up fast. Either they are stupidly cheap to operate or the lease agreements are signed while everybody's smoking something other than tobacco.

The obvious option is to tax by either vehicle yearly mileage or by gross weight. Both correlate with amount of expenditure needed on road maintenance.
And the gas station owner is probably looking to "pick up pennies in front of steamrollers", i.e., to get small profits operating very close to something with a massive downside risk. That is a common human trait, and is behind all sorts of business failures (up to and including large banks).

Some people think they're clever and that stealing utility bit by bit won't be noticed when a frontal assault encounters resistance. If they were even half as clever as they think they are, the frontal assault being resisted would've taught them to back off.
Edit: Toby Faire, I do have a more nuanced definition of theft. For example, I believe that phone-home software is actually delayed theft. At some time in the future, they will take away the phone-home response and effectively steal the software (and possibly access to files or use of hardware too) from you. No, I don't care that the shrinkwrap license thinks it can redefine a purchase as a rental. This post doesn't suddenly become German just because I bury "by reading this, you agree that it's in German or have to cut off your hands" in tiny print somewhere.

@Zenith said in The Official Status Thread:

Not necessarily. In germany, we have a growing number of turkish or arab owned barber shops. How many barber shops would you need?
Well, many of them are just made up for money laundering. Their income is from illegal drug seller or gambling hells, and the cash can becleaned for the "fee" of income tax payments.
