@jinpa yes. Has dominated online education / training stuff for years.

iPhones make texts with Android phones difficult to read, by using white text on a bright green background.
I don't think it's difficult to read

@topspin I thought so from the headline, but (skimming) the actual article reveals that it's actually something else. Rather than tracking you using the share buttons and tracking pixels embedded everywhere, apparently there's also a built-in Facebook browser that tracks you even more when you click links from Facebook. Or something like that

It's when you follow a link from within the Facebook and Instagram apps. (Probably other things in that stable too, such as WhatsApp.) In that case, they launch the system web view, which is basically just the standard browser, but they do so in such a way that they add in deep invasive tracking. I'm not 100% sure (I wasn't paying close attention to the whole thread after I worked out it doesn't affect me at all) but I think they were doing this on both iOS and Android.
There is only one appropriate punishment for this: revoking the certification of the apps (and the developers) and yanking them totally from the relevant app stores.
FBMeta will scream and a lot of users will be unhappy, but gross violations like this need the banhammer of punishment. Then hold a nice old meeting with the senior execs concerned after the ban has been put in place, and watch those cyborgs squirm.

@dkf Why does every website these days need an app anyway?

So they can do extra tracking of you, duh.

Apple doesn’t lose a thing if they fuck over Facebook. They’re not in the same business, as they have paying customers.
(That doesn’t automatically mean they don’t do the same shit, but at least gives them the option and incentive not to.)

(That doesn’t automatically mean they don’t do the same shit, but at least gives them the option and incentive not to.)I would imagine your average Facebook user who obviously doesn't give a fuck about profiling would get kind of unhappy if they weren't able to use the Facebook app on their device any more. Plenty of people build their entire business on Facebook these days, so Apple would probably face a slew of lawsuits. Bullshit suits for sure because Terms Of Use, but still shit that costs them.
-
Apple doesn’t lose a thing if they fuck over Facebook.
You mean if they fuck over Facebook again.
In a statement, Meta said that injecting a tracking code obeyed users’ preferences on whether or not they allowed apps to follow them
If Meta are being honest here then it's not doing anything for iOS users who have asked not to be tracked, and if they're not then Apple are usually pretty firm with 3rd party developers who don't follow the rules.

$20 says they’re not.

They’re actually completely arbitrary in their enforcement of arbitrary rules, mostly fucking over smaller parties, but there’s good chance they’re sticking to this.

gui and just use it that way instead of switching between the slightly different ways of the at least five different IDEs I've touched recently.
I have avoided using any graphical source control programs for years and the only regret I have is that it makes moving files around a bit more inconvenient but it's still been a huge net positive in my life.
Now that Windows has multiple workspaces, I keep a workspace open for each of my projects, and then a couple for common tasks like "Git & ADOS"
I actually use Visual Studio's Git client for my main workflows and drop down to Git Bash for "complicated" things like when I make a mistake and need to stash.
-
need to stash
I wish i could figure out how to do this in the recommended clients without the rigmarole of making superfluous branches and tags and check-ins....
-
@Tsaukpaetra Hm, both visual stupidos (visual stupido and visual stupido code) offer stash in the git menu.

So, I seem to have got the wrong kind of (discrete) TPM for my computer and dug around to see if it could be updated to a newer firmware, but seems I'm out of luck. Gotta get a new one as my current one is stuck on 1.2 and Windows 11 wants 2.0.
During testing I did however find out that an installed Windows 11 will not complain about the TPM being too old, it's happy as long as there is a TPM installed. I guess trying to reinstall W11 would be a no-go, though.
-
Why would you want to install Windows 11 in the first place?
-

It's been a while since I looked, so maybe it's improved since then.
-

My 6th gen i7 has firmware TPM 2.0 but still fell foul of the supported CPU requirements so wouldn't install.
I used MediaCreationTool which creates a copy of the W11 installer with the checks skipped. It's been fine since and updates without issue.Apparently it's now an option within Rufus to create an installer with the checks skipped.

Do you have the option for PTT (Intel, I forget what the AMD one is called)? Sometimes that lets you get an emulated TPM 2.0 even if the hardware one isn't.

Having used Windows 11 for a few months I now can no longer go back to the horrible abomination that is Windows 10. I tried, and it was not fun to use the hodepodge of stupidity that is W10.

Yes, and I can use that until I get a new proper one.

Having used Windows 11 for quite a while, it's.... Fine. Could do without the constant GPU driver recoveries though. And the Explorer crashes. And the odd hangs every now and then.
But otherwise, totally mediocre!

Be interesting if I could get the 8Gb install again. Gave up on the 4Gb after Win7.

I haven't been following. What are your complaints about W10 which get addressed in W11?
I know for a fact being able to reorder virtual desktops is one.

choosing an IDE that actually works
When someone suggests that, they usually seem to have a different idea of what "actually works" means to me. I've tried a number of alternatives (including IntelliJ) and they tend to either be too limited or behave really strangely.
Not defending any IDE, because they are all various grades of shit, and it's all a matter of what flavor of shit you find the least bad. But as long as you don't try anything fancy with git in IntelliJ, it works well enough. At least for me. That said, having been stuck with git for 15 years or so, I actually prefer using a CLI over a UI for anything except diffs and merges so I guess that's the main reason I've never had IntelliJ go splodey on my git.
At my current place, I can't even get IntelliJ to talk to the git server for some reason. I'd like to be able to do the code reviews in the editor instead of the web interface of github but

Until December 31 2022 we will pay 20,000 to 91,337 USD for exploits of vulnerabilities in the Linux Kernel, Kubernetes, GKE or kCTF
We launched an expansion of kCTF VRP on November 1, 2021 in which we paid 31,337 to 50,337 USD to those that are able to compromise our kCTF cluster
What's up with the weird odd numbers?

Yes, until you're multiplying partial numbers together in which case you're now doing something a little more tricky than just addition.
